Guerra contra los amonitas

1 Pasado algún tiempo, murió Najás, rey de los amonitas, y su hijo lo sucedió en el trono. 2 Entonces David pensó: «Debo ser leal con Janún hijo de Najás, pues su padre lo fue conmigo.» Así que envió a unos mensajeros para darle el pésame por la muerte de su padre.
Cuando los mensajeros de David llegaron al país de los amonitas para darle el pésame a Janún, 3 los jefes de ese pueblo le aconsejaron: «¿Y acaso cree Su Majestad que David ha enviado a estos mensajeros sólo para darle el pésame, y porque quiere honrar a su padre? ¿No será más bien que han venido a espiar y explorar el país para luego destruirlo?» 4 Entonces Janún mandó que apresaran a los mensajeros de David y que les afeitaran la barba y les rasgaran la ropa por la mitad, a la altura de las nalgas. Y así los despidió.
5 Los hombres de David se sentían muy avergonzados. Cuando David se enteró de lo que les había pasado, mandó que los recibieran y les dieran este mensaje de su parte: «Quédense en Jericó, y no regresen hasta que les crezca la barba.»
6 Al darse cuenta Janún y los amonitas de que habían ofendido a David, enviaron treinta y tres mil kiloss de plata para contratar carros y jinetes en Aram Najarayin,s en Aram de Macá y en Sobá. 7 Contrataron treinta y dos mil carros y al rey de Macá con su ejército, que acampó frente a Medeba. Por su parte, los amonitas salieron de sus ciudades y se dispusieron para el combate. 8 Cuando David lo supo, despachó a Joab con todos los soldados del ejército. 9 Los amonitas avanzaron hasta la *entrada de su ciudad, pero los reyes que habían venido a reforzarlos se quedaron aparte, en campo abierto.
10 Joab se vio amenazado por el frente y por la retaguardia, así que escogió a las mejores tropas israelitas para pelear contra los *sirios, 11 y el resto de las tropas las puso al mando de su hermano Abisay, para que enfrentaran a los amonitas. 12 A Abisay le ordenó: «Si los sirios pueden más que yo, tú vendrás a rescatarme; y si los amonitas pueden más que tú, yo te rescataré. 13 ¡Ánimo! Luchemos con valor por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios. ¡Y que el Señor haga lo que bien le parezca!»
14 En seguida Joab y sus tropas avanzaron contra los sirios, y éstos huyeron de él. 15 Al ver que los sirios se daban a la fuga, también los amonitas huyeron de Abisay y se refugiaron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab regresó a Jerusalén.
16 Los sirios, al verse derrotados por Israel, enviaron mensajeros para pedir ayuda a los sirios que vivían al otro lado del río Éufrates. Sofac, jefe del ejército de Hadad Ezer, se puso al frente de ellos. 17 Cuando David se enteró de esto, reunió a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán y tomó posición de batalla contra los sirios. Éstos lo atacaron, 18 pero tuvieron que huir ante los israelitas. David mató a siete mil soldados sirios de caballería y cuarenta mil de infantería; también mató a Sofac, jefe del ejército. 19 Al ver que los sirios habían sido derrotados por los israelitas, todos los vasallos de Hadad Ezer hicieron la paz con David y se sometieron a él. A partir de entonces, los sirios se negaron a ir en auxilio de los amonitas.

David’s Campaign against the Ammonites

1 Later King Nahash of the Ammonites died and his son succeeded him.2 David said, “I will express my loyaltyt to Hanun son of Nahash, for his father was loyalt to me.” So David sent messengers to express his sympathy over his father’s death.t When David’s servants entered Ammonite territory to visit Hanun and express the king’s sympathy,t3 the Ammonite officials said to Hanun, “Do you really think David is trying to honor your father by sending these messengers to express his sympathy?t No, his servants have come to you so they can get information and spy out the land!”s4 So Hanun seized David’s servants and shaved their beards off.t He cut off the lower part of their robes so that their buttocks were exposedt and then sent them away.

5 Messengerst came and told David what had happened to the men, so he summoned them, for the men were thoroughly humiliated. The king said, “Stay in Jerichos until your beards grow again; then you may come back.”
6 When the Ammonites realized that David was disgusted with them,t Hanun and the Ammonites sent 1,000 talentst of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim, Aram Maacah, and Zobah.t

7 They hired 32,000 chariots, along with the king of Maacah and his army, who came and camped in front of Medeba. The Ammonites also assembled from their cities and marched out to do battle.
8 When David heard the news, he sent Joab and the entire army to meet them.t9 The Ammonites marched out and were deployed for battle at the entrance to the city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.10 When Joab saw that the battle would be fought on two fronts, he chose some of Israel’s best men and deployed them against the Arameans.st11 He put his brother Abishai in charge of the rest of the army and they were deployed against the Ammonites.12 Joabt said, “If the Arameans start to overpower me,t you come to my rescue. If the Ammonites start to overpower you,t I will come to your rescue.13 Be strong! Let’s fight bravely for the sake of our people and the cities of our God! The Lord will do what he decides is best!”t14 So Joab and his ment marched toward the Arameans to do battle, and they fled before him.

15 When the Ammonites saw the Arameans flee, they fled before Joab’st brother Abishai and withdrew into the city. Joab went back to Jerusalem.s
16 When the Arameans realized they had been defeated by Israel, they sent for reinforcements from beyond the Euphrates River,t led by Shophach the commanding general of Hadadezer’s army.t17 When David was informed, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan River,t and marched against them.st David deployed his army against the Arameans for battle and they fought against him.t18 The Arameans fled before Israel. David killed 7,000s Aramean charioteers and 40,000 infantrymen; he also killed Shophacht the commanding general.

19 When Hadadezer’s subjects saw they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. The Arameans were no longer willing to help the Ammonites.
