1 Poi il re Davide disse a tutta la raunanza: "Salomone, mio figliuolo, il solo che Dio abbia scelto, è ancora giovine e in tenera età, e l’opera è grande; poiché questo palazzo non è destinato a un uomo, ma a Dio, all’Eterno.2 Ora io ho impiegato tutte le mie forze a preparare per la casa del mio Dio dell’oro per ciò che dev’esser d’oro, dell’argento per ciò che deve esser d’argento, del rame per ciò che dev’esser di rame, del ferro per ciò che dev’esser di ferro, e del legname per ciò che dev’esser di legno, delle pietre d’onice e delle pietre da incastonare, delle pietre brillanti e di diversi colori, ogni specie di pietre preziose, e del marmo bianco in gran quantità.3 Di più, per l’affezione che porto alla casa del mio Dio, siccome io posseggo in proprio un tesoro d’oro e d’argento, io lo do alla casa del mio Dio, oltre a tutto quello che ho preparato per la casa del santuario:4 cioè tremila talenti d’oro, d’oro d’Ofir, e settemila talenti d’argento purissimo, per rivestirne le pareti delle sale:5 l’oro per ciò che dev’esser d’oro, l’argento per ciò che dev’esser d’argento, e per tutti i lavori da eseguirsi dagli artefici. Chi è disposto a fare oggi qualche offerta all’Eterno?"

6 Allora i capi delle case patriarcali, i capi delle tribù d’Israele, i capi delle migliaia e delle centinaia e gli amministratori degli affari del re fecero delle offerte volontarie;7 e diedero per il servizio della casa di Dio cinquemila talenti d’oro, diecimila dariche, diecimila talenti d’argento, diciottomila talenti di rame, e centomila talenti di ferro.8 Quelli che possedevano delle pietre preziose, le consegnarono a Jehiel, il Ghershonita, perché fossero riposte nel tesoro della casa dell’Eterno.9 Il popolo si rallegrò di quelle loro offerte volontarie, perché avean fatte quelle offerte all’Eterno con tutto il cuore; e anche il re Davide se ne rallegrò grandemente.

10 Davide benedisse l’Eterno in presenza di tutta la raunanza, e disse: "Benedetto sii tu, o Eterno, Dio del padre nostro Israele, di secolo in secolo!11 A te, o Eterno, la grandezza, la potenza, la gloria, lo splendore, la maestà, poiché tutto quello che sta in cielo e sulla terra e tuo! A te, o Eterno, il regno; a te, che t’innalzi come sovrano al disopra di tutte le cose!12 Da te vengono la ricchezza e la gloria; tu signoreggi su tutto; in tua mano sono la forza e la potenza, e sta in tuo potere il far grande e il render forte ogni cosa.13 Or dunque, o Dio nostro, noi ti rendiamo grazie, e celebriamo il tuo nome glorioso.14 Poiché chi son io, e chi è il mio popolo, che siamo in grado di offrirti volenterosamente cotanto? Giacché tutto viene da te; e noi t’abbiam dato quello che dalla tua mano abbiam ricevuto.15 Noi siamo dinanzi a te dei forestieri e dei pellegrini, come furon tutti i nostri padri; i nostri giorni sulla terra son come un’ombra, e non v’è speranza.16 O Eterno, Dio nostro, tutta quest’abbondanza di cose che abbiam preparata per edificare una casa a te, al tuo santo nome, viene dalla tua mano, e tutta ti appartiene.17 Io so, o mio Dio, che tu scruti il cuore, e ti compiaci della rettitudine; perciò, nella rettitudine del cuor mio, t’ho fatte tutte queste offerte volontarie, e ho veduto ora con gioia il tuo popolo che si trova qui, farti volenterosamente le offerte sue.18 O Eterno, o Dio d’Abrahamo, d’Isacco e d’Israele nostri padri, mantieni in perpetuo nel cuore del tuo popolo queste disposizioni, questi pensieri, e rendi saldo il suo cuore in te;19 e da’ a Salomone, mio figliuolo, un cuore integro, affinch’egli osservi i tuoi comandamenti, i tuoi precetti e le tue leggi, affinché eseguisca tutti questi miei piani, e costruisca il palazzo, per il quale ho fatto i preparativi".

20 Poi Davide disse a tutta la raunanza: "Or benedite l’Eterno, il vostro Dio". E tutta la raunanza benedì l’Eterno, l’Iddio de’ loro padri; e s’inchinarono, e si prostrarono dinanzi all’Eterno e dinanzi al re.21 E il giorno seguente immolarono delle vittime in onore dell’Eterno, e gli offrirono degli olocausti: mille giovenchi, mille montoni, mille agnelli, con le relative libazioni, e altri sacrifizi in gran numero, per tutto Israele.22 E mangiarono e bevvero, in quel giorno, nel cospetto dell’Eterno, con gran gioia; proclamarono re, per la seconda volta, Salomone, figliuolo di Davide, e lo unsero, consacrandolo all’Eterno come conduttore del popolo, e unsero Tsadok come sacerdote.

23 Salomone si assise dunque sul trono dell’Eterno come re, invece di Davide suo padre; prosperò, e tutto Israele gli ubbidì.24 E tutti i capi, gli uomini prodi e anche tutti i figliuoli del re Davide si sottomisero al re Salomone.25 E l’Eterno innalzò sommamente Salomone nel cospetto di tutto Israele, e gli diede un regale splendore, quale nessun re, prima di lui, ebbe mai in Israele.

26 Davide, figliuolo d’Isai, regnò su tutto Israele.27 Il tempo che regnò sopra Israele fu quarant’anni: a Hebron regnò sette anni; e a Gerusalemme, trentatre.28 Morì in prospera vecchiezza, sazio di giorni, di ricchezze, e di gloria; e Salomone, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo. Or le azioni di Davide,29 le prime e le ultime, sono scritte nel libro di Samuele, il veggente, nel libro di Nathan, il profeta, e nel libro di Gad, il veggente,30 con tutta la storia del suo regno, delle sue gesta, e di quel che avvenne ai suoi tempi tanto in Israele, quanto in tutti i regni degli altri paesi.

The People Contribute to the Project

1 King David said to the entire assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is just an inexperienced young man,t and the task is great, for this palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.2 So I have made every effortt to provide what is needed for the temple of my God, including the gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood,t as well as a large amount of onyx, settings of antimony and other stones, all kinds of precious stones, and alabaster.3 Now, to show my commitment to the temple of my God, I donate my personal treasure of gold and silver to the temple of my God, in addition to all that I have already supplied for this holy temple.4 This includes 3,000 talentst of gold from Ophir and 7,000 talents of refined silver for overlaying the walls of the buildings,

5 for gold and silver items, and for all the work of the craftsmen. Who else wants to contribute to the Lord today?”
6 The leaders of the families, the leaders of the Israelite tribes, the commanders of units of a thousand and a hundred, and the supervisors of the king’s work contributed willingly.7 They donated for the service of God’s temple 5,000 talentst and ten thousand daricsts of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze, and 100,000 talents of iron.8 All who possessed precioust stones donated them to the treasury of the Lord’s temple, which was under the supervision of Jehiel the Gershonite.

9 The people were delighted with their donations, for they contributed to the Lord with a willing attitude;t King David was also very happy.t

David Praises the Lord

10 David praised the Lord before the entire assembly:t
“O Lord God of our father Israel, you deserve praise forevermore!11 O Lord, you are great, mighty, majestic, magnificent, glorious, and sovereignt over all the sky and earth! You have dominion and exalt yourself as the rulert of all.12 You are the source of wealth and honor;t you rule over all. You possess strength and might to magnify and give strength to all.t

13 Now, our God, we give thanks to you and praise your majestic name!
14 “But who am I and who are my people, that we should be in a position to contribute this much?t Indeed, everything comes from you, and we have simply given back to you what is yours.t15 For we are resident foreigners and nomads in your presence, like all our ancestors;t our days are like a shadow on the earth, without security.t16 O Lord our God, all this wealth, which we have collected to build a temple for you to honor your holy name, comes from you; it all belongs to you.17 I know, my God, that you examine thoughtst and are pleased with integrity. With pure motivest I contribute all this; and now I look with joy as your people who have gathered here contribute to you.18 O Lord God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, maintain the motives of your people and keep them devoted to you.t

19 Make my son Solomon willing to obey your commands, rules, and regulations, and to complete building the palace for which I have made preparations.”t

20 David told the entire assembly: “Praise the Lord your God!” So the entire assembly praised the Lord God of their ancestors; they bowed down and stretched out flat on the ground before the Lord and the king.

David Designates Solomon King

21 The next day they made sacrifices and offered burnt sacrifices to the Lord (1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, 1,000 lambs), along with their accompanying drink offerings and many other sacrifices for all Israel.

22 They held a feastt before the Lord that day and celebrated.t
Then they designated Solomon, David’s son, as king a second time;s before the Lord they anointed him as ruler and Zadok as priest.23 Solomon sat on the Lord’s throne as king in place of his father David; he was successful and all Israel was loyal to him.t24 All the officers and warriors, as well as all of King David’s sons, pledged their allegiance to King Solomon.t

25 The Lord greatly magnified Solomon before all Israel and bestowed on him greater majesty than any king of Israel before him.t

David’s Reign Comes to an End

26 David son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.27 He reigned over Israel forty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years and in Jerusalems thirty-three years.28 He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth, and honor.t His son Solomon succeeded him.29 King David’s accomplishments, from start to finish, are recorded in the Annals of Samuel the prophet, the Annals of Nathan the prophet, and the Annals of Gad the prophet.t

30 Recorded there are all the facts about his reign and accomplishments, and an account of the events that involved him, Israel, and all the neighboring kingdoms.t
