第10章
1 兄弟たちよ。このことを知らずにいてもらいたくない。わたしたちの先祖はみな雲の下におり、みな海を通り、2 みな雲の中、海の中で、モーセにつくバプテスマを受けた。3 また、みな同じ霊の食物を食べ、4 みな同じ霊の飲み物を飲んだ。すなわち、彼らについてきた霊の岩から飲んだのであるが、この岩はキリストにほかならない。5 しかし、彼らの中の大多数は、神のみこころにかなわなかったので、荒野で滅ぼされてしまった。6 これらの出来事は、わたしたちに対する警告であって、彼らが悪をむさぼったように、わたしたちも悪をむさぼることのないためなのである。7 だから、彼らの中のある者たちのように、偶像礼拝者になってはならない。すなわち、「民は座して飲み食いをし、また立って踊り戯れた」と書いてある。8 また、ある者たちがしたように、わたしたちは不品行をしてはならない。不品行をしたため倒された者が、一日に二万三千人もあった。9 また、ある者たちがしたように、わたしたちは主を試みてはならない。主を試みた者は、へびに殺された。10 また、ある者たちがつぶやいたように、つぶやいてはならない。つぶやいた者は、「死の使」に滅ぼされた。11 これらの事が彼らに起ったのは、他に対する警告としてであって、それが書かれたのは、世の終りに臨んでいるわたしたちに対する訓戒のためである。12 だから、立っていると思う者は、倒れないように気をつけるがよい。13 あなたがたの会った試錬で、世の常でないものはない。神は真実である。あなたがたを耐えられないような試錬に会わせることはないばかりか、試錬と同時に、それに耐えられるように、のがれる道も備えて下さるのである。14 それだから、愛する者たちよ。偶像礼拝を避けなさい。15 賢明なあなたがたに訴える。わたしの言うことを、自ら判断してみるがよい。16 わたしたちが祝福する祝福の杯、それはキリストの血にあずかることではないか。わたしたちがさくパン、それはキリストのからだにあずかることではないか。17 パンが一つであるから、わたしたちは多くいても、一つのからだなのである。みんなの者が一つのパンを共にいただくからである。18 肉によるイスラエルを見るがよい。供え物を食べる人たちは、祭壇にあずかるのではないか。19 すると、なんと言ったらよいか。偶像にささげる供え物は、何か意味があるのか。また、偶像は何かほんとうにあるものか。20 そうではない。人々が供える物は、悪霊ども、すなわち、神ならぬ者に供えるのである。わたしは、あなたがたが悪霊の仲間になることを望まない。21 主の杯と悪霊どもの杯とを、同時に飲むことはできない。主の食卓と悪霊どもの食卓とに、同時にあずかることはできない。22 それとも、わたしたちは主のねたみを起そうとするのか。わたしたちは、主よりも強いのだろうか。23 すべてのことは許されている。しかし、すべてのことが益になるわけではない。すべてのことは許されている。しかし、すべてのことが人の徳を高めるのではない。24 だれでも、自分の益を求めないで、ほかの人の益を求めるべきである。25 すべて市場で売られている物は、いちいち良心に問うことをしないで、食べるがよい。26 地とそれに満ちている物とは、主のものだからである。27 もしあなたがたが、不信者のだれかに招かれて、そこに行こうと思う場合、自分の前に出される物はなんでも、いちいち良心に問うことをしないで、食べるがよい。28 しかし、だれかがあなたがたに、これはささげ物の肉だと言ったなら、それを知らせてくれた人のために、また良心のために、食べないがよい。29 良心と言ったのは、自分の良心ではなく、他人の良心のことである。なぜなら、わたしの自由が、どうして他人の良心によって左右されることがあろうか。30 もしわたしが感謝して食べる場合、その感謝する物について、どうして人のそしりを受けるわけがあろうか。31 だから、飲むにも食べるにも、また何事をするにも、すべて神の栄光のためにすべきである。32 ユダヤ人にもギリシヤ人にも神の教会にも、つまずきになってはいけない。33 わたしもまた、何事にもすべての人に喜ばれるように努め、多くの人が救われるために、自分の益ではなく彼らの益を求めている。

1 For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;2 and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;3 and did all eat the same spiritual food;4 and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.5 Howbeit with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.9 Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and perished by the serpents.10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.14 Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ?17 seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we are all partake of the one bread.18 Behold Israel after the flesh: have not they that eat the sacrifices communion with the altar?19 What say I then? that a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have communion with demons.21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?23 All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things edify.24 Let no man seek his own, but each his neighbor’s good.25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake,26 for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.27 If one of them that believe not biddeth you to a feast, and ye are disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake.28 But if any man say unto you, This hath been offered in sacrifice, eat not, for his sake that showed it, and for conscience sake:29 conscience, I say, not thine own, but the other’s; for why is my liberty judged by another conscience?30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.32 Give no occasions of stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God:33 even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
