1 Corinzi 10

1 Fratelli, non dobbiamo mai dimenticare ciò che accadde ai nostri antenati nel deserto, tanto tempo fa. Dio li guidò protetti dalla nuvola che li portò tutti in salvo attraverso il Mar Rosso.2 Questo potrebbe essere chiamato il loro « battesimo ». Essi furono battezzati nel mare e nella nuvola, per essere seguaci di Mosè.3-4 Tutti mangiarono lo stesso cibo spirituale e tutti bevvero la stessa bevanda spirituale, perché attingevano dalla roccia spirituale che li seguiva: e quella roccia era Cristo.5 Tuttavia, la maggior parte di loro non fu gradita a Dio, e costoro morirono nel deserto.6 Questa lezione ci serve d’esempio e ci insegna a non fare come loro: a non desiderare le cose malvagie.7 Perciò, non adorate gl’idoli come hanno fatto loro. Le Scritture infatti ci dicono: « Il popolo si sedette per mangiare e bere, poi si alzò per divertirsi ».8 Un altro fatto che ci serve di lezione è ciò che accadde quando alcuni di loro fecero l’amore liberamente senza essere sposati. Quel giorno ne morirono ventitremila.9 E non mettiamo alla prova la pazienza del Signore, come hanno fatto alcuni di loro, che poi morirono morsi dai serpenti.10 E non vi lamentate come hanno fatto alcuni di loro; fu per questa ragione che Dio mandò il suo angelo a distruggerli.11 Tutti questi fatti accaddero loro per servire d’esempio a noi; e sono stati scritti per metterci in guardia, visto che ormai siamo agli ultimi giorni e il mondo è vicino alla sua fine.12 Perciò, badate bene; se pensate: « Io non mi comporterei mai in questo modo », fate ancora più attenzione, perché anche voi potete cadere in peccato!13 Ma ricordate questo: i cattivi pensieri che vi passano per la mente non sono niente di nuovo; molti altri hanno affrontato le stesse identiche difficoltà prima di voi, ma nessuna tentazione è irresistibile e Dio non permetterà mai che la tentazione diventi così forte da non riuscire a resisterle. È il Signore stesso che ce l’ha promesso, ed egli mantiene sempre quello che dice. Non solo, vi insegnerà anche come uscirne, in modo che possiate sopportare la prova pazientemente.14 Perciò, cari fratelli, evitate di adorare gli idoli di qualsiasi specie.

Il piede in due staffe.

15 Voi siete persone intelligenti, vedete voi stessi se ciò che dico è giusto.16 Quando chiediamo le benedizioni di Dio, mentre beviamo il vino del calice alla tavola del Signore, non significa forse che tutti quelli che bevono dividono le benedizioni del sangue di Cristo? E quando spezziamo il pane tutti insieme, non significa forse che stiamo partecipando al corpo di Cristo?17 Non importa quanti siamo, tutti noi mangiamo quell’unico pane, e con quest’atto dimostriamo che siamo tutti parte di un solo corpo, quello di Cristo.18 Questo vale anche per gli Ebrei. Quando tutti insieme mangiano la carne delle vittime sacrificate, sono uniti da quell’atto al Dio dell’altare.19 Che cosa voglio dire? Forse che gl’idoli, a cui i pagani offrono sacrifici, sono veri e propri dèi, e che questi sacrifici hanno qualche valore?20 Tutt’altro! Vi dico, anzi, che quelli che fanno sacrifici a questi idoli, sono uniti nel sacrificio ai demòni, non certo al Signore! Ed io non voglio che abbiate niente a che fare coi demòni, mangiando insieme con i pagani.21 Voi non potete bere contemporaneamente al calice del Signore e a quello di Satana, né mangiare contemporaneamente alla tavola del Signore e a quella di Satana.22 Volete forse provocare la gelosia del Signore? Siete forse più forti di lui?23 Tutte le cose sono lecite, ma non tutte sono utili; tutte le cose sono lecite, ma non tutto serve al bene della comunità.24 Non pensate soltanto a voi stessi, pensate anche agli altri!25 Ecco che cosa dovrete fare: mangiate pure di tutto ciò che si vende al macello, senza chiedere se sia stato o meno offerto agl’idoli, così la vostra coscienza non ne sarà turbata.26 Perché, come dicono le Scritture: « La terra e tutte le buone cose che essa contiene appartengono a Dio ».27 Se qualcuno che non è credente vi invita a pranzo, e vi fa piacere accettare, andateci pure. Mangiate tutto ciò che vi verrà servito, senza sollevare questioni di coscienza.28 Ma se qualcuno vi avverte che la tal carne è stata offerta agl’idoli, allora non ne mangiate, per riguardo verso chi vi ha avvertito e verso la sua coscienza.29 In questo caso, non è quello che senti tu che importa, ma ciò che prova lui.
« Ma », potreste dirmi, « perché devo essere condizionato da ciò che pensa qualcun altro?30 Se mangio una certa cosa con riconoscenza verso Dio, perché devo permettere che un altro sciupi tutto, soltanto perché pensa che faccio male? »31 Bene, ve lo dico io il perché. Perché tutto ciò che fate deve essere fatto per la gloria di Dio, sia che mangiate, beviate, o facciate qualsiasi altra cosa.32 Perciò, fate in modo di non scandalizzare né Ebrei né pagani, e neppure cristiani.33 Fate come faccio io, che in ogni cosa mi sforzo di piacere a tutti, senza mai cercare il mio interesse, ma quello degli altri, perché tutti siano salvati.

1 For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;2 and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;3 and did all eat the same spiritual food;4 and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.5 Howbeit with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.9 Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and perished by the serpents.10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.14 Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ?17 seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we are all partake of the one bread.18 Behold Israel after the flesh: have not they that eat the sacrifices communion with the altar?19 What say I then? that a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have communion with demons.21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?23 All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things edify.24 Let no man seek his own, but each his neighbor’s good.25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake,26 for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.27 If one of them that believe not biddeth you to a feast, and ye are disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake.28 But if any man say unto you, This hath been offered in sacrifice, eat not, for his sake that showed it, and for conscience sake:29 conscience, I say, not thine own, but the other’s; for why is my liberty judged by another conscience?30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.32 Give no occasions of stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God:33 even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
