درس عبرت از بت‌پرستی اسرائیل

1 زیرا ای برادران، نمی‌خواهم از این موضوع غافل باشید که پدران ما همه زیر ابر بودند و همه نیز از میان دریا گذشتند.2 آنان همه در ابر و در دریا در اتحاد با موسی تعمید یافتند،3 و همه از یک خوراک روحانی خوردند4 و از یک آشامیدنی روحانی نوشیدند؛ زیرا از آن صخرۀ روحانی می‌نوشیدند که از پی ایشان می‌آمد، و آن صخره مسیح بود.5 با این همه، خدا از بیشتر آنان خرسند نبود، پس اجسادشان در سرتاسر بیابان پراکنده شد.6 حال، این رویدادها به‌وقوع پیوست تا نمونه‌هایی باشد برای ما، تا ما همچون آنان در پی بدی نباشیم.7 پس بت‌پرست مشوید، چنانکه بعضی از ایشان شدند؛ به‌گونه‌ای که نوشته شده است: «قوم برای خورْد و نوش نشستند و برای عیاشی به‌پا‌خاستند.»8 و نه به بی‌عفتی دست‌یازیم، چنانکه بعضی از ایشان کردند، و در یک روز بیست و سه هزار تن به هلاکت رسیدند.9 و نه مسیح را بیازماییم، چنانکه بعضی از آنان کردند و به‌وسیلۀ مارها کشته شدند.10 و نه شِکْوِه و شکایت کنید، چنانکه بعضی از ایشان کردند و هلاک‌کننده هلاکشان ساخت.11 این امور چون نمونه بر آنان واقع گردید و نوشته شد تا عبرتی باشد برای ما که در زمانی به‌سر می‌بریم که غایتِ همۀ اعصارt تحقق یافته است.12 پس اگر گمان می‌کنید استوارید، بهوش باشید که نیفتید!13 هیچ آزمایشی بر شما نمی‌آید که مناسب بشر نباشد.t و خدا امین است؛ او اجازه نمی‌دهد بیش از توان خود آزموده شوید، بلکه به وقتِ آزمایش، راه گریزی نیز فراهم می‌سازد تا تاب تحملش را داشته باشید.

ضیافت بتها و شام خداوند

14 پس ای عزیزان، از بت‌پرستی بگریزید.15 با خردمندان سخن می‌گویم؛ خود دربارۀ آنچه می‌گویم قضاوت کنید.16 آیا جام برکت که آن را مبارک می‌خوانیم، شریک شدن در خون مسیح نیست؟ و آیا نانی که پاره می‌کنیم، شریک شدن در بدن مسیح نیست؟17 از آنجا که نان یکی است، ما نیز که بسیاریم، یک بدن هستیم، زیرا همه از یک نان بهره می‌یابیم.18 قوم اسرائیل را بنگرید: آیا آنان که از قربانیها می‌خوردند در مذبح شریک نمی‌شدند؟19 آیا مقصودم این است که خوراک تقدیمی به بت چیزی است، یا اینکه بت چیزی است؟20 نه، مقصود این است که قربانیهای بت‌پرستان تقدیم دیوها می‌شود نه تقدیم خدا، و من نمی‌خواهم شما شریک دیوها باشید.21 نمی‌توانید هم از جام خداوند بنوشید هم از جام دیوها؛ نمی‌توانید هم از سفرۀ خداوند بهره یابید، هم از سفرۀ دیوها.22 آیا می‌خواهیم غیرت خداوند را برانگیزیم؟ آیا از او تواناتریم؟

حدود آزادی در خوردن خوراک بتها

23 «همه چیز جایز است» - امّا همه چیز مفید نیست. «همه چیز رواست» - امّا همه چیز سازنده نیست.24 هیچ‌کس در پی نفع خود نباشد، بلکه نفع دیگران را بجوید.25 هر گوشتی را که در قصابخانه می‌فروشند، بدون نظر به وجدان بخورید،26 زیرا «جهان و هر آنچه در آن است از آنِ خداوند است.»27 اگر شخصی بی‌ایمان شما را به صرف غذا دعوت می‌کند و شما نیز مایل به رفتن هستید، هر آنچه در برابرتان می‌گذارد بدون نظر به وجدان بخورید،28 مگر اینکه کسی به شما بگوید: «این گوشت به بتها تقدیم شده است.» تنها در این صورت، به‌خاطر کسی که این را به شما گفت و به‌خاطر وجدان، از آن مخورید -29 البته مقصودم وجدان آن شخص است نه وجدان شما. زیرا چرا باید وجدان شخصی دیگر بر آزادی من حکم کند؟30 اگر خوراکی را با شکرگزاری می‌خورم، چرا باید به‌خاطر آنچه خدا را برای آن شکر می‌گویم، محکومم کنند؟31 پس هر چه می‌کنید، خواه خوردن، خواه نوشیدن و خواه هر کار دیگر، همه را برای جلال خدا بکنید.32 هیچ‌کس را آزرده‌خاطر مسازید، چه یهودیان، چه یونانیان و چه کلیسای خدا را،33 همان‌گونه که من نیز می‌کوشم تا همه را به هر نحو که می‌توانم خشنود سازم. زیرا در پی نفع خود نیستم، بلکه نفع بسیاری را می‌جویم، تا نجات یابند.

Don't Worship Idols

1  t Friends, I want to remind you that all our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea. 2 This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses. 3 t All of them also ate the same spiritual food 4 t and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ.

5 t But most of them did not please God. So they died, and their bodies were scattered all over the desert.
6 What happened to them is a warning to keep us from wanting to do the same evil things. 7 t They worshiped idols, just as the Scriptures say, “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around.” So don't worship idols. 8 t Some of those people did shameful things, and in a single day about 23,000 died. Don't do shameful things as they did. 9 t And don't try to test Christ, t as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes. 10 t Don't even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel.

11 These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days.
12 Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall.

13 t You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.
14 My friends, you must keep away from idols. 15 I am speaking to you as people who have enough sense to know what I am talking about. 16 t When we drink from the cup we ask God to bless, isn't that sharing in the blood of Christ? When we eat the bread we break, isn't that sharing in the body of Christ?

17 By sharing in the same loaf of bread, we become one body, even though there are many of us.
18  t t Aren't the people of Israel sharing in the worship when they gather around the altar and eat the sacrifices offered there? 19 Am I saying that either the idols or the food sacrificed to them is anything at all? 20 t No, I am not! This food is really sacrificed to demons and not to God. I don't want you to have anything to do with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the cup of demons and still drink from the Lord's cup. You cannot eat at the table of demons and still eat at the Lord's table.

22 t We would make the Lord jealous if we did this. And we are not stronger than the Lord.

Always Honor God

26 t The Scriptures say, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”
27 If an unbeliever invites you to dinner, and you want to go, then go. Eat whatever you are served. Don't cause a problem for someone's conscience by asking where the food came from. 28-29 But if you are told it has been sacrificed to idols, don't cause a problem by eating it. I don't mean a problem for yourself, but for the one who told you. Why should my freedom be limited by someone else's conscience?

30 If I give thanks for what I eat, why should anyone accuse me of doing wrong?
31 When you eat or drink or do anything else, always do it to honor God. 32 Don't cause problems for Jews or Greeks or anyone else who belongs to God's church. 33 I always try to please others instead of myself, in the hope that many of them will be saved.
