Lecciones de la idolatría de Israel

1  Amados hermanos, no quiero que se olviden de lo que les sucedió a nuestros antepasados hace mucho tiempo en el desierto. Todos fueron guiados por una nube que iba delante de ellos y todos caminaron a través del mar sobre tierra seca. 2 Todos ellos fueron bautizados en la nube y en el mar como seguidores de Moisés. 3 Todos comieron el mismo alimento espiritual 4 y todos bebieron la misma agua espiritual. Pues bebieron de la roca espiritual que viajaba con ellos, y esa roca era Cristo. 5 Sin embargo, Dios no se agradó con la mayoría de ellos, y sus cuerpos fueron dispersados por el desierto.

6 Esas cosas sucedieron como una advertencia para nosotros, a fin de que no codiciemos lo malo como hicieron ellos, 7 ni rindamos culto a ídolos como hicieron algunos de ellos. Como dicen las Escrituras: «El pueblo celebró con abundante comida y bebida, y se entregó a diversiones paganas»t. 8 Y no debemos cometer inmoralidad sexual como hicieron algunos de ellos, lo cual causó la muerte de veintitrés mil personas en un solo día.

9 Tampoco deberíamos poner a prueba a Cristot como hicieron algunos de ellos, y luego murieron mordidos por serpientes. 10 Y no murmuren como lo hicieron algunos de ellos, y luego el ángel de la muerte los destruyó. 11 Esas cosas les sucedieron a ellos como ejemplo para nosotros. Se pusieron por escrito para que nos sirvieran de advertencia a los que vivimos en el fin de los tiempos.

12 Si ustedes piensan que están firmes, tengan cuidado de no caer. 13 Las tentaciones que enfrentan en su vida no son distintas de las que otros atraviesan. Y Dios es fiel; no permitirá que la tentación sea mayor de lo que puedan soportar. Cuando sean tentados, él les mostrará una salida, para que puedan resistir.

14 Por lo tanto, mis queridos amigos, huyan de la adoración a los ídolos. 15 Ustedes son personas razonables. Juzguen por sí mismos si lo que digo es cierto. 16 Cuando bendecimos la copa en la Mesa del Señor, ¿no participamos en la sangre de Cristo? Y, cuando partimos el pan, ¿no participamos en el cuerpo de Cristo? 17 Aunque somos muchos, todos comemos de un mismo pan, con lo cual demostramos que somos un solo cuerpo. 18 Piensen en el pueblo de Israel. ¿No estaban unidos al comer de los sacrificios del altar?

19 ¿Qué es lo que trato de decir? ¿Que la comida ofrecida a ídolos tiene alguna importancia o que los ídolos son dioses verdaderos? 20 No, de ninguna manera. Lo que digo es que esos sacrificios se ofrecen a los demonios, no a Dios. Y no quiero que ustedes tengan parte con los demonios. 21 Ustedes no pueden beber de la copa del Señor y también de la copa de los demonios. No pueden comer de la Mesa del Señor y también de la mesa de los demonios. 22 ¿Qué? ¿Acaso nos atreveremos a despertar los celos del Señor? ¿Piensan que somos más fuertes que él?

23 Ustedes dicen: «Se me permite hacer cualquier cosa»t, pero no todo les conviene. Dicen: «Se me permite hacer cualquier cosa», pero no todo trae beneficio. 24 No se preocupen por su propio bien, sino por el bien de los demás.

25 Así que pueden comer cualquier carne que se venda en el mercado sin preguntar nada por motivos de conciencia. 26 Pues «la tierra es del SEÑOR y todo lo que hay en ella»t.

27 Si alguien que no es creyente los invita a cenar a su casa, acepten la invitación si desean. Coman todo lo que les ofrezcan sin preguntar nada por motivos de conciencia. 28 (Pero supongamos que alguien les dice: «Esta carne se ofreció a un ídolo». No la coman, por respeto a la conciencia del que lo dijo. 29 Tal vez no sea una cuestión de conciencia para ustedes, pero lo es para la otra persona). Pues, ¿por qué tendría que ser restringida mi libertad por lo que piense otra persona? 30 Si puedo darle gracias a Dios por la comida y disfrutarla, ¿por qué debería ser condenado por comerla?

31 Así que, sea que coman o beban o cualquier otra cosa que hagan, háganlo todo para la gloria de Dios. 32 No ofendan a los judíos ni a los gentilest ni a la iglesia de Dios. 33 Yo también trato de complacer a todos en todo lo que hago. No hago sólo lo que es mejor para mí; hago lo que es mejor para otros a fin de que muchos sean salvos.

Don't Worship Idols

1  t Friends, I want to remind you that all our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea. 2 This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses. 3 t All of them also ate the same spiritual food 4 t and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ.

5 t But most of them did not please God. So they died, and their bodies were scattered all over the desert.
6 What happened to them is a warning to keep us from wanting to do the same evil things. 7 t They worshiped idols, just as the Scriptures say, “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around.” So don't worship idols. 8 t Some of those people did shameful things, and in a single day about 23,000 died. Don't do shameful things as they did. 9 t And don't try to test Christ, t as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes. 10 t Don't even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel.

11 These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days.
12 Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall.

13 t You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.
14 My friends, you must keep away from idols. 15 I am speaking to you as people who have enough sense to know what I am talking about. 16 t When we drink from the cup we ask God to bless, isn't that sharing in the blood of Christ? When we eat the bread we break, isn't that sharing in the body of Christ?

17 By sharing in the same loaf of bread, we become one body, even though there are many of us.
18  t t Aren't the people of Israel sharing in the worship when they gather around the altar and eat the sacrifices offered there? 19 Am I saying that either the idols or the food sacrificed to them is anything at all? 20 t No, I am not! This food is really sacrificed to demons and not to God. I don't want you to have anything to do with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the cup of demons and still drink from the Lord's cup. You cannot eat at the table of demons and still eat at the Lord's table.

22 t We would make the Lord jealous if we did this. And we are not stronger than the Lord.

Always Honor God

26 t The Scriptures say, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”
27 If an unbeliever invites you to dinner, and you want to go, then go. Eat whatever you are served. Don't cause a problem for someone's conscience by asking where the food came from. 28-29 But if you are told it has been sacrificed to idols, don't cause a problem by eating it. I don't mean a problem for yourself, but for the one who told you. Why should my freedom be limited by someone else's conscience?

30 If I give thanks for what I eat, why should anyone accuse me of doing wrong?
31 When you eat or drink or do anything else, always do it to honor God. 32 Don't cause problems for Jews or Greeks or anyone else who belongs to God's church. 33 I always try to please others instead of myself, in the hope that many of them will be saved.
