Advertencias basadas en la historia de Israel

1 No quiero que desconozcan, hermanos, que nuestros antepasados estuvieron todos bajo la nube y que todos atravesaron el mar. 2 Todos ellos fueron bautizados en la nube y en el mar para unirse a Moisés. 3 Todos también comieron el mismo alimento espiritual 4 y tomaron la misma bebida espiritual, pues bebían de la roca espiritual que los acompañaba, y la roca era Cristo. 5 Sin embargo, la mayoría de ellos no agradaron a Dios, y sus cuerpos quedaron tendidos en el desierto.
6 Todo eso sucedió para servirnos de ejemplo,s a fin de que no nos apasionemos por lo malo, como lo hicieron ellos. 7 No sean idólatras, como lo fueron algunos de ellos, según está escrito: «Se sentó el pueblo a comer y a beber, y se entregó al desenfreno.»s 8 No cometamos inmoralidad sexual, como algunos lo hicieron, por lo que en un sólo día perecieron veintitrés mil. 9 Tampoco pongamos a *prueba al Señor, como lo hicieron algunos y murieron víctimas de las serpientes. 10 Ni murmuren contra Dios, como lo hicieron algunos y sucumbieron a manos del ángel destructor.
11 Todo eso les sucedió para servir de ejemplo, y quedó escrito para advertencia nuestra, pues a nosotros nos ha llegado el fin de los tiempos. 12 Por lo tanto, si alguien piensa que está firme, tenga cuidado de no caer. 13 Ustedes no han sufrido ninguna *tentación que no sea común al género *humano. Pero Dios es fiel, y no permitirá que ustedes sean tentados más allá de lo que puedan aguantar. Más bien, cuando llegue la tentación, él les dará también una salida a fin de que puedan resistir.

Las fiestas idólatras y la Cena del Señor

14 Por tanto, mis queridos hermanos, huyan de la idolatría. 15 Me dirijo a personas sensatas; juzguen ustedes mismos lo que digo. 16 Esa copa de bendición por la cual damos gracias,s ¿no significa que entramos en comunión con la sangre de Cristo? Ese pan que partimos, ¿no significa que entramos en comunión con el cuerpo de Cristo? 17 Hay un solo pan del cual todos participamos; por eso, aunque somos muchos, formamos un solo cuerpo.
18 Consideren al pueblo de Israel como tal:s ¿No entran en comunión con el altar los que comen de lo sacrificado? 19 ¿Qué quiero decir con esta comparación? ¿Que el sacrificio que los *gentiles ofrecen a los ídolos sea algo, o que el ídolo mismo sea algo? 20 No, sino que cuando ellos ofrecen sacrificios, lo hacen para los demonios, no para Dios, y no quiero que ustedes entren en comunión con los demonios. 21 No pueden beber de la copa del Señor y también de la copa de los demonios; no pueden participar de la mesa del Señor y también de la mesa de los demonios. 22 ¿O vamos a provocar a celos al Señor? ¿Somos acaso más fuertes que él?

La libertad del creyente

23 «Todo está permitido», pero no todo es provechoso. «Todo está permitido», pero no todo es constructivo. 24 Que nadie busque sus propios intereses sino los del prójimo.
25 Coman de todo lo que se vende en la carnicería, sin preguntar nada por motivos de conciencia, 26 porque «del Señor es la tierra y todo cuanto hay en ella».s
27 Si algún incrédulo los invita a comer, y ustedes aceptan la invitación, coman de todo lo que les sirvan sin preguntar nada por motivos de conciencia. 28 Ahora bien, si alguien les dice: «Esto ha sido ofrecido en sacrificio a los ídolos», entonces no lo coman, por consideración al que se lo mencionó, y por motivos de conciencia.s 29 (Me refiero a la conciencia del otro, no a la de ustedes.) ¿Por qué se ha de juzgar mi libertad de acuerdo con la conciencia ajena? 30 Si con gratitud participo de la comida, ¿me van a condenar por comer algo por lo cual doy gracias a Dios?
31 En conclusión, ya sea que coman o beban o hagan cualquier otra cosa, háganlo todo para la gloria de Dios. 32 No hagan *tropezar a nadie, ni a judíos, ni a *gentiles ni a la iglesia de Dios. 33 Hagan como yo, que procuro agradar a todos en todo. No busco mis propios intereses sino los de los demás, para que sean salvos.

Don't Worship Idols

1  t Friends, I want to remind you that all our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea. 2 This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses. 3 t All of them also ate the same spiritual food 4 t and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ.

5 t But most of them did not please God. So they died, and their bodies were scattered all over the desert.
6 What happened to them is a warning to keep us from wanting to do the same evil things. 7 t They worshiped idols, just as the Scriptures say, “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around.” So don't worship idols. 8 t Some of those people did shameful things, and in a single day about 23,000 died. Don't do shameful things as they did. 9 t And don't try to test Christ, t as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes. 10 t Don't even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel.

11 These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days.
12 Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall.

13 t You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.
14 My friends, you must keep away from idols. 15 I am speaking to you as people who have enough sense to know what I am talking about. 16 t When we drink from the cup we ask God to bless, isn't that sharing in the blood of Christ? When we eat the bread we break, isn't that sharing in the body of Christ?

17 By sharing in the same loaf of bread, we become one body, even though there are many of us.
18  t t Aren't the people of Israel sharing in the worship when they gather around the altar and eat the sacrifices offered there? 19 Am I saying that either the idols or the food sacrificed to them is anything at all? 20 t No, I am not! This food is really sacrificed to demons and not to God. I don't want you to have anything to do with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the cup of demons and still drink from the Lord's cup. You cannot eat at the table of demons and still eat at the Lord's table.

22 t We would make the Lord jealous if we did this. And we are not stronger than the Lord.

Always Honor God

26 t The Scriptures say, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”
27 If an unbeliever invites you to dinner, and you want to go, then go. Eat whatever you are served. Don't cause a problem for someone's conscience by asking where the food came from. 28-29 But if you are told it has been sacrificed to idols, don't cause a problem by eating it. I don't mean a problem for yourself, but for the one who told you. Why should my freedom be limited by someone else's conscience?

30 If I give thanks for what I eat, why should anyone accuse me of doing wrong?
31 When you eat or drink or do anything else, always do it to honor God. 32 Don't cause problems for Jews or Greeks or anyone else who belongs to God's church. 33 I always try to please others instead of myself, in the hope that many of them will be saved.
