EPISTOLE DI S. PAOLO I AI CORINZI 10

1 Perché, fratelli, non voglio che ignoriate che i nostri padri furon tutti sotto la nuvola, e tutti passarono attraverso il mare, 2 e tutti furon battezzati, nella nuvola e nel mare, per esser di Mosè, 3 e tutti mangiarono lo stesso cibo spirituale, 4 e tutti bevvero la stessa bevanda spirituale, perché beveano alla roccia spirituale che li seguiva; e la roccia era Cristo. 5 Ma della maggior parte di loro Iddio non si compiacque, poiché furono atterrati nel deserto. 6 Or queste cose avvennero per servir d'esempio a noi, onde non siam bramosi di cose malvage, come coloro ne furon bramosi; 7 onde non diventiate idolatri come alcuni di loro, secondo che è scritto: Il popolo si sedette per mangiare e per bere, poi s'alzò per divertirsi; 8 onde non fornichiamo come taluni di loro fornicarono, e ne caddero, in un giorno solo, ventitremila; 9 onde non tentiamo il Signore, come alcuni di loro lo tentarono, e perirono morsi dai serpenti. 10 E non mormorate come alcuni di loro mormorarono, e perirono colpiti dal distruttore. 11 Or queste cose avvennero loro per servire d'esempio, e sono state scritte per ammonizione di noi, che ci troviamo agli ultimi termini dei tempi. 12 Perciò, chi si pensa di stare ritto, guardi di non cadere. 13 Niuna tentazione vi ha còlti, che non sia stata umana; or Iddio è fedele e non permetterà che siate tentati al di là delle vostre forze; ma con la tentazione vi darà anche la via d'uscirne, onde la possiate sopportare. 14 Perciò, cari miei, fuggite l'idolatria. 15 Io parlo come a persone intelligenti; giudicate voi di quello che dico. 16 Il calice della benedizione che noi benediciamo, non è egli la comunione col sangue di Cristo? Il pane, che noi rompiamo, non è egli la comunione col corpo di Cristo? 17 Siccome v'è un unico pane, noi, che siam molti, siamo un corpo unico, perché partecipiamo tutti a quell'unico pane. 18 Guardate l'Israele secondo la carne; quelli che mangiano i sacrifici non hanno essi comunione con l'altare? 19 Che dico io dunque? Che la carne sacrificata agl'idoli sia qualcosa? Che un idolo sia qualcosa? 20 Tutt'altro; io dico che le carni che i Gentili sacrificano, le sacrificano ai demoni e non a Dio; or io non voglio che abbiate comunione coi demoni. 21 Voi non potete bere il calice del Signore e il calice de' demoni; voi non potete partecipare alla mensa del Signore e alla mensa dei demoni. 22 O vogliamo noi provocare il Signore a gelosia? Siamo noi più forti di lui? 23 Ogni cosa è lecita ma non ogni cosa è utile; ogni cosa è lecita ma non ogni cosa edifica. 24 Nessuno cerchi il proprio vantaggio, ma ciascuno cerchi l'altrui. 25 Mangiate di tutto quello che si vende al macello senza fare inchieste per motivo di coscienza; 26 perché al Signore appartiene la terra e tutto quello ch'essa contiene. 27 Se qualcuno de' non credenti v'invita, e voi volete andarci, mangiate di tutto quello che vi è posto davanti, senza fare inchieste per motivo di coscienza. 28 Ma se qualcuno vi dice: Questa è cosa di sacrifici, non ne mangiate per riguardo a colui che v'ha avvertito, e per riguardo alla coscienza; 29 alla coscienza, dico, non tua, ma di quell'altro; infatti, perché la mia libertà sarebb'ella giudicata dalla coscienza altrui? 30 E se io mangio di una cosa con rendimento di grazie, perché sarei biasimato per quello di cui io rendo grazie? 31 Sia dunque che mangiate, sia che beviate, sia che facciate alcun'altra cosa, fate tutto alla gloria di Dio. 32 Non siate d'intoppo né ai Giudei, né ai Greci, né alla Chiesa di Dio: 33 sì come anch'io compiaccio a tutti in ogni cosa, non cercando l'utile mio proprio, ma quello de' molti, affinché siano salvati.

1 CORINTHIANS 10

Don't Worship Idols

1  t Friends, I want to remind you that all our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea. 2 This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses. 3 t All of them also ate the same spiritual food 4 t and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ.

5 t But most of them did not please God. So they died, and their bodies were scattered all over the desert.
6 What happened to them is a warning to keep us from wanting to do the same evil things. 7 t They worshiped idols, just as the Scriptures say, “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around.” So don't worship idols. 8 t Some of those people did shameful things, and in a single day about 23,000 died. Don't do shameful things as they did. 9 t And don't try to test Christ, t as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes. 10 t Don't even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel.

11 These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days.
12 Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall.

13 t You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted. But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.
14 My friends, you must keep away from idols. 15 I am speaking to you as people who have enough sense to know what I am talking about. 16 t When we drink from the cup we ask God to bless, isn't that sharing in the blood of Christ? When we eat the bread we break, isn't that sharing in the body of Christ?

17 By sharing in the same loaf of bread, we become one body, even though there are many of us.
18  t t Aren't the people of Israel sharing in the worship when they gather around the altar and eat the sacrifices offered there? 19 Am I saying that either the idols or the food sacrificed to them is anything at all? 20 t No, I am not! This food is really sacrificed to demons and not to God. I don't want you to have anything to do with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the cup of demons and still drink from the Lord's cup. You cannot eat at the table of demons and still eat at the Lord's table.

22 t We would make the Lord jealous if we did this. And we are not stronger than the Lord.

Always Honor God

26 t The Scriptures say, “The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord.”
27 If an unbeliever invites you to dinner, and you want to go, then go. Eat whatever you are served. Don't cause a problem for someone's conscience by asking where the food came from. 28-29 But if you are told it has been sacrificed to idols, don't cause a problem by eating it. I don't mean a problem for yourself, but for the one who told you. Why should my freedom be limited by someone else's conscience?

30 If I give thanks for what I eat, why should anyone accuse me of doing wrong?
31 When you eat or drink or do anything else, always do it to honor God. 32 Don't cause problems for Jews or Greeks or anyone else who belongs to God's church. 33 I always try to please others instead of myself, in the hope that many of them will be saved.
