1 بھائیو، مَیں نہیں چاہتا کہ آپ اِس بات سے ناواقف رہیں کہ ہمارے باپ دادا سب بادل کے نیچے تھے۔ وہ سب سمندر میں سے گزرے۔2 اُن سب نے بادل اور سمندر میں موسیٰ کا بپتسمہ لیا۔3 سب نے ایک ہی روحانی خوراک کھائی4 اور سب نے ایک ہی روحانی پانی پیا۔ کیونکہ مسیح روحانی چٹان کی صورت میں اُن کے ساتھ ساتھ چلتا رہا اور وہی اُن سب کو پانی پلاتا رہا۔5 اِس کے باوجود اُن میں سے بیشتر لوگ اللہ کو پسند نہ آئے، اِس لئے وہ ریگستان میں ہلاک ہو گئے۔6 یہ سب کچھ ہماری عبرت کے لئے واقع ہوا تاکہ ہم اُن لوگوں کی طرح بُری چیزوں کی ہَوَس نہ کریں۔7 اُن میں سے بعض کی طرح بُت پرست نہ بنیں، جیسے مُقدّس نوشتوں میں لکھا ہے، ”لوگ کھانے پینے کے لئے بیٹھ گئے اور پھر اُٹھ کر رنگ رلیوں میں اپنے دل بہلانے لگے۔“8 ہم زنا بھی نہ کریں جیسے اُن میں سے بعض نے کیا اور نتیجے میں ایک ہی دن میں 23,000 افراد ڈھیر ہو گئے۔9 ہم خداوند کی آزمائش بھی نہ کریں جس طرح اُن میں سے بعض نے کی اور نتیجے میں سانپوں سے ہلاک ہوئے۔10 اور نہ بڑبڑائیں جس طرح اُن میں سے بعض بڑبڑانے لگے اور نتیجے میں ہلاک کرنے والے فرشتے کے ہاتھوں مارے گئے۔11 یہ ماجرے عبرت کی خاطر اُن پر واقع ہوئے اور ہم اخیر زمانے میں رہنے والوں کی نصیحت کے لئے لکھے گئے۔12 غرض جو سمجھتا ہے کہ وہ مضبوطی سے کھڑا ہے، خبردار رہے کہ گر نہ پڑے۔13 آپ صرف ایسی آزمائشوں میں پڑے ہیں جو انسان کے لئے عام ہوتی ہیں۔ اور اللہ وفادار ہے۔ وہ آپ کو آپ کی طاقت سے زیادہ آزمائش میں نہیں پڑنے دے گا۔ جب آپ آزمائش میں پڑ جائیں گے تو وہ اُس میں سے نکلنے کی راہ بھی پیدا کر دے گا تاکہ آپ اُسے برداشت کر سکیں۔14 غرض میرے پیارو، بُت پرستی سے بھاگیں۔15 مَیں آپ کو سمجھ دار جان کر بات کر رہا ہوں۔ آپ خود میری اِس بات کا فیصلہ کریں۔16 جب ہم عشائے ربانی کے موقع پر برکت کے پیالے کو برکت دے کر اُس میں سے پیتے ہیں تو کیا ہم یوں مسیح کے خون میں شریک نہیں ہوتے؟ اور جب ہم روٹی توڑ کر کھاتے ہیں تو کیا مسیح کے بدن میں شریک نہیں ہوتے؟17 روٹی تو ایک ہی ہے، اِس لئے ہم جو بہت سے ہیں ایک ہی بدن ہیں، کیونکہ ہم سب ایک ہی روٹی میں شریک ہوتے ہیں۔18 بنی اسرائیل پر غور کریں۔ کیا بیت المُقدّس میں قربانیاں کھانے والے قربان گاہ کی رفاقت میں شریک نہیں ہوتے؟19 کیا مَیں یہ کہنا چاہتا ہوں کہ بُتوں کے چڑھاوے کی کوئی حیثیت ہے؟ یا کہ بُت کی کوئی حیثیت ہے؟ ہرگز نہیں۔20 مَیں یہ کہتا ہوں کہ جو قربانیاں وہ گزرانتے ہیں اللہ کو نہیں بلکہ شیاطین کو گزرانتے ہیں۔ اور مَیں نہیں چاہتا کہ آپ شیاطین کی رفاقت میں شریک ہوں۔21 آپ خداوند کے پیالے اور ساتھ ہی شیاطین کے پیالے سے نہیں پی سکتے۔ آپ خداوند کے رفاقتی کھانے اور ساتھ ہی شیاطین کے رفاقتی کھانے میں شریک نہیں ہو سکتے۔22 یا کیا ہم اللہ کی غیرت کو اُکسانا چاہتے ہیں؟ کیا ہم اُس سے طاقت ور ہیں؟23 سب کچھ روا تو ہے، لیکن سب کچھ مفید نہیں۔ سب کچھ جائز تو ہے، لیکن سب کچھ ہماری تعمیر و ترقی کا باعث نہیں ہوتا۔24 ہر کوئی اپنے ہی فائدے کی تلاش میں نہ رہے بلکہ دوسرے کے۔25 بازار میں جو کچھ بِکتا ہے اُسے کھائیں اور اپنے ضمیر کو مطمئن کرنے کی خاطر پوچھ گچھ نہ کریں،26 کیونکہ ”زمین اور جو کچھ اُس پر ہے رب کا ہے۔“27 اگر کوئی غیرایمان دار آپ کی دعوت کرے اور آپ اُس دعوت کو قبول کر لیں تو آپ کے سامنے جو کچھ بھی رکھا جائے اُسے کھائیں۔ اپنے ضمیر کے اطمینان کے لئے تفتیش نہ کریں۔28 لیکن اگر کوئی آپ کو بتا دے، ”یہ بُتوں کا چڑھاوا ہے“ تو پھر اُس شخص کی خاطر جس نے آپ کو آگاہ کیا ہے اور ضمیر کی خاطر اُسے نہ کھائیں۔29 مطلب ہے اپنے ضمیر کی خاطر نہیں بلکہ دوسرے کے ضمیر کی خاطر۔ کیونکہ یہ کس طرح ہو سکتا ہے کہ کسی دوسرے کا ضمیر میری آزادی کے بارے میں فیصلہ کرے؟30 اگر مَیں خدا کا شکر کر کے کسی کھانے میں شریک ہوتا ہوں تو پھر مجھے کیوں بُرا کہا جائے؟ مَیں تو اُسے خدا کا شکر کر کے کھاتا ہوں۔31 چنانچہ سب کچھ اللہ کے جلال کی خاطر کریں، خواہ آپ کھائیں، پئیں یا اَور کچھ کریں۔32 کسی کے لئے ٹھوکر کا باعث نہ بنیں، نہ یہودیوں کے لئے، نہ یونانیوں کے لئے اور نہ اللہ کی جماعت کے لئے۔33 اِسی طرح مَیں بھی سب کو پسند آنے کی ہر ممکن کوشش کرتا ہوں۔ مَیں اپنے ہی فائدے کے خیال میں نہیں رہتا بلکہ دوسروں کے تاکہ بہتیرے نجات پائیں۔

1 For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;2 and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;3 and did all eat the same spiritual food;4 and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.5 Howbeit with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.9 Neither let us make trial of the Lord, as some of them made trial, and perished by the serpents.10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.11 Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.14 Wherefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ?17 seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we are all partake of the one bread.18 Behold Israel after the flesh: have not they that eat the sacrifices communion with the altar?19 What say I then? that a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have communion with demons.21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?23 All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things edify.24 Let no man seek his own, but each his neighbor’s good.25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake,26 for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.27 If one of them that believe not biddeth you to a feast, and ye are disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake.28 But if any man say unto you, This hath been offered in sacrifice, eat not, for his sake that showed it, and for conscience sake:29 conscience, I say, not thine own, but the other’s; for why is my liberty judged by another conscience?30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.32 Give no occasions of stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God:33 even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
