Criterio de la utilidad común

1 Procuren, pues, tener amor, y al mismo tiempo aspiren a que Dios les dé dones espirituales, especialmente el de profecía.2 Aquel que habla en lenguas extrañas, habla a Dios y no a seres humanos, pues nadie lo entiende. En su espíritu dice cosas secretas, pero nadie las entiende.3 En cambio, el que comunica mensajes proféticos, lo hace para edificación de la comunidad, y la anima y consuela.4 El que habla en una lengua extraña, lo hace para su propio bien; pero el que comunica mensajes proféticos, edifica a la iglesia.5 Yo quisiera que todos ustedes hablaran en lenguas extrañas; pero preferiría que comunicaran mensajes proféticos; esto es mejor que hablar en lenguas, a menos que se interprete su significado de tal manera que sirva para edificación de la iglesia.6 Por ejemplo, hermanos, no les servirá de nada que yo los visite y les hable en lenguas extrañas, en vez de hablarles de lo que Dios nos manifiesta, o del conocimiento de la verdad, o en vez de comunicarles algún mensaje profético o alguna enseñanza.7 Si los instrumentos musicales, como la flauta o el arpa, no tuvieran diferente sonido, no podría distinguirse qué música produce cada uno.8 Y si, en la guerra, la trompeta no diera sus toques con claridad, nadie se prepararía para la batalla.9 Lo mismo sucede con ustedes: si no usan su lengua para pronunciar palabras que se puedan entender, ¿cómo va a saberse lo que están diciendo? ¡Le estarán hablando al aire!10 Sin duda hay muchos idiomas en el mundo, y todos se valen del sonido.11 Pero si yo no conozco el significado de los sonidos, seré un extranjero para el que me habla, y él será un extranjero para mí.12 Por eso, ya que ustedes ambicionan poseer dones espirituales, procuren tener en abundancia aquellos que ayudan a la edificación de la iglesia.13 Por lo tanto, el que habla en lengua extraña, pídale a Dios que le conceda el poder de interpretarla.14 Pues si yo oro en una lengua extraña, es verdad que estoy orando con mi espíritu, pero mi entendimiento permanece estéril.15 ¿Qué debo hacer entonces? Pues debo orar con el espíritu, pero también con el entendimiento. Debo cantar con el espíritu, pero también con el entendimiento.16 Porque si tú alabas a Dios solamente con el espíritu, y una persona común y corriente te escucha, no podrá unirse a ti en tu acción de gracias, pues no entenderá lo que dices.17 Tu acción de gracias podrá ser muy buena, pero no será útil para el otro.18 Doy gracias a Dios porque hablo en lenguas extrañas más que todos ustedes;19 pero en la iglesia prefiero decir cinco palabras que se entiendan, para enseñar así a otros, que decir diez mil palabras en lengua extraña.20 Hermanos, no piensen ustedes como niños. Sean como niños para lo malo; pero sean adultos en su modo de pensar.21 En la Escritura se dice: «Hablaré a esta nación en lenguas extrañas y por boca de extranjeros, pero ni aun así me harán caso, dice el Señor.»22 Así que el hablar en lenguas es una señal para los que no son creyentes, no para los que tienen fe. Pero el comunicar mensajes proféticos es una señal para los que tienen fe, no para los que no son creyentes.23 Porque cuando la iglesia se encuentra reunida, si todos están hablando en lenguas, y entra una persona común y corriente o un no creyente, creerá que ustedes se han vuelto locos.24 En cambio, si todos comunican mensajes proféticos, y entra un no creyente o una persona común y corriente, él mismo quedará convencido y se examinará al oír lo que todos están diciendo.25 Así quedará al descubierto lo más profundo de su corazón, y adorará de rodillas a Dios, y reconocerá que Dios está verdaderamente entre ustedes.

Necesidad de orden

26 En resumen, hermanos, cuando ustedes se reúnan, unos pueden cantar salmos, otros pueden enseñar, o comunicar lo que Dios les haya revelado, o hablar en lenguas extrañas, o interpretarlas. Pero que todo sea para edificación mutua.27 Y cuando se hable en lenguas extrañas, que lo hagan dos personas, o tres cuando más, y por turno; además, alguien debe interpretar esas lenguas.28 Pero si no hay nadie que pueda interpretarlas, que éstos no hablen en lenguas delante de toda la comunidad, sino en privado y para Dios.29 Igualmente, si hay profetas, que hablen dos o tres, y que los otros examinen lo que se haya dicho.30 Pero si Dios le revela algo a otra persona que está allí sentada, entonces el primero debe dejar de hablar.31 De esta manera todos, cada uno en su turno correspondiente, podrán comunicar mensajes proféticos, para que todos aprendan y se animen.32 El don de profecía debe estar bajo el control del profeta,33 porque Dios es Dios de paz y no de confusión.
Siguiendo la práctica general de las comunidades cristianas,34 las mujeres deben guardar silencio en las reuniones de la iglesia, porque no les está permitido hablar. Deben estar sometidas a sus esposos, como manda la ley.35 Si quieren saber algo, pregúntenlo a sus esposos en casa; porque no está bien que una mujer hable en las reuniones de la iglesia.36 Tengan presente que la palabra de Dios no comenzó en ustedes, ni ustedes son los únicos que la han recibido.37 Si alguien se cree profeta, o cree estar inspirado por el Espíritu, reconocerá que esto que les estoy escribiendo es un mandato del Señor.38 Y si no lo reconoce, el Señor tampoco lo reconoce a él.39 Así pues, hermanos míos, aspiren al don de profecía, y no prohíban que se hable en lenguas;40 pero háganlo todo decentemente y con orden.

1 Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.2 For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation.4 He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.5 Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.6 But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war?9 So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air.10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no kind is without signification.11 If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me.12 So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.16 Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest?17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.18 I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:19 howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.20 Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men.21 In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.23 If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all;25 the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.27 If any man speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and that in turn; and let one interpret:28 but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.29 And let the prophets speak by two or three, and let the others discern.30 But if a revelation be made to another sitting by, let the first keep silence.31 For ye all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted;32 and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets;33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,34 let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law.35 And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.36 What? was it from you that the word of God went forth? or came it unto you alone?37 If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.38 But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant.39 Wherefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.40 But let all things be done decently and in order.
