1 Fate in modo che l’amore sia lo scopo della vostra vita; però chiedete anche i doni speciali dello Spirito Santo, soprattutto il dono della profezia, per poter predicare.

« Parlare in altre lingue ».

2 Ma se il vostro dono è quello di parlare in altre lingue che non avete mai studiato, ricordatevi che, facendo così, parlerete a Dio, non agli altri che non possono capirvi. Voi parlerete per la potenza dello Spirito, ma le cose che direte saranno tutte segrete.3 Chi profetizza, invece, e predica il messaggio di Dio, aiuta gli altri a crescere spiritualmente, li incoraggia e li conforta.4 Perciò, chi parla in lingue sconosciute aiuta se stesso a crescere spiritualmente, mentre, chi profetizza aiuta la chiesa a crescere in santità e serenità.5 Vorrei che tutti voi parlaste in altre lingue, ma ancora di più, vorrei che foste capaci di profetizzare e di predicare il messaggio di Dio. Chi profetizza è più utile di chi parla in altre lingue, a meno che quest’ultimo non interpreti ciò che dice, e così la chiesa ne riceva un beneficio.6 Infatti, cari fratelli, se io venissi da voi parlando in altre lingue che non capite, di che aiuto vi sarei? Vi aiuto invece se vi porto qualche rivelazione, o conoscenza o profezia o parole di istruzione.7 Anche gli strumenti, il flauto, o l’arpa, per esempio, se non dessero suoni diversi, come si potrebbe distinguere il suona di uno da quello dell’altro?8 E se la tromba non suonasse le note giuste, come farebbero i soldati a capire che sono chiamati in battaglia?9 Questo vale anche per voi: se pronunciate parole incomprensibili, grazie al vostro dono delle lingue, come faranno gli altri a capire ciò che dite? Sarà come se parlaste all’aria!10 Per quante lingue esistano al mondo, tutte hanno un senso.11 Se non capisco le parole di una lingua, sarò uno straniero per chi mi parla, e l’altro lo sarà per me.12 Quindi, visto che ci tenete tanto ad avere doni speciali dallo Spirito Santo, chiedete i migliori, quelli che servono per il bene di tutta la chiesa.13 Perciò, chi parla in altre lingue deve pregare Dio di avere anche il dono di poterle interpretare.14 Infatti, se io prego in una lingua che non conosco, è il mio spirito che prega, non la mia mente.15 Che farò allora? Pregherò con lo spirito, ma anche con la mente (e cioè in lingue sconosciute, ma anche nella lingua corrente che tutti capiscono). Canterò inni al Signore in lingue sconosciute, ma canterò anche in lingua corrente, in modo che si possa capire la lode che innalzo a Dio.16 Altrimenti, se lodate e ringraziate Dio soltanto con lo spirito, parlando in altre lingue, come faranno quelli che non vi capiscono a lodare Dio con voi? Come potranno ringraziare il Signore con voi, se non capiscono ciò che dite?17 Certo, da parte vostra, ringraziate Dio come si deve, ma gli altri non ne ricevono alcun beneficio.18 Ringraziate Dio perché parlo in lingue sconosciute più di tutti voi;19 ma in chiesa preferisco dire cinque parole comprensibili per aiutare anche gli altri, piuttosto che diecimila che nessuno riesce a capire.20 Cari fratelli, non ragionate come bambini. Siate come bambini innocenti per quanto riguarda il male, ma uomini fatti per capire queste cose.21 Il Signore ci dice nelle Scritture: « Io parlerò a questo popolo per mezzo di stranieri, gente che parla altre lingue, ma neppure così mi daranno ascolto ».22 Vedete, perciò, che la capacità di parlare in altre lingue è un segno non per i figli credenti, ma per quelli che non credono. Invece, la profezia, è ciò che serve ai cristiani.23 Quando la chiesa si riunisce al completo, se vi mettete a parlare in altre lingue ed entrano degli estranei o dei non credenti, che succederà? Probabilmente vi prenderanno tutti per matti!24 Se, invece, tutti fanno discorsi profetici ed entra qualche estraneo o qualche non credente, costui si potrà convincere di essere peccatore e la sua coscienza sarà toccata da ciò che sente dire.25 Mentre ascolta, saranno messi a nudo i segreti del suo cuore; e allora s’inginocchierà per adorare Dio e dirà che il Signore è davvero lì fra voi.26 Per ricapitolare, fratelli miei: nelle vostre riunioni ci sarà chi canta, chi insegna, chi comunica speciali messaggi di Dio, chi parla in altre lingue e ci sarà anche chi interpreta queste lingue sconosciute; ma ricordate che ogni cosa dev’essere d’aiuto spirituale per tutti.27 Quelli che parlano in lingue sconosciute non devono essere più di due o tre, e devono parlare uno per volta, poi ci deve essere sempre qualcuno pronto ad interpretare ciò che dicono.28 Però, se non c’è nessuno che possa interpretare, chi vorrebbe parlare in lingue sconosciute se ne stia zitto in pubblico. Parli soltanto sottovoce fra sé e con Dio.29-30 Per quanto riguarda i profeti, due o tre possono fare profezie, uno per volta, se hanno questo dono; e gli altri restino ad ascoltare. Ma se qualcun altro che sta ascoltando riceve un messaggio o un’idea dal Signore, il primo smetta di parlare.31 In questo modo, tutti quelli che hanno il dono della profezia possono parlare uno dopo l’altro per insegnare e incoraggiare quelli che ascoltano.32 Ricordate che chi ha un messaggio da Dio, è anche capace di fermarsi e di aspettare il suo turno.33 Dio infatti non vuole né disordine, né confusione. Dio ama l’armonia e la pace.34 Come è usanza in tutte le comunità di credenti, le donne devono tacere durante le riunioni, perché a loro non è permesso parlare. Stiano sottomesse agli uomini, invece, come dicono le Scritture stesse.35 Se hanno una domanda da fare, la facciano al marito, a casa, perché non sta bene che una donna parli durante le riunioni della chiesa.36 Non siete d’accordo? Pensate, forse, che la parola di Dio cominci e finisca con voi, Corinzi? Beh, vi sbagliate di grosso!37 Se qualcuno pensa di avere il dono della profezia, o qualsiasi altro dono dello Spirito Santo, deve riconoscere che ciò che dico è un ordine del Signore.38 Ma se qualcuno preferisce non capire, resti pure nella sua ignoranza!39 Perciò, fratelli, ambite pure ad essere profeti per poter predicare con chiarezza il messaggio di Dio, e non proibite agli altri di parlare in lingue sconosciute,40 ma che tutto sia fatto con decoro e con ordine.

1 Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.2 For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation.4 He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.5 Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.6 But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war?9 So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air.10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no kind is without signification.11 If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me.12 So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church.13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.16 Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest?17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.18 I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:19 howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.20 Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men.21 In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord.22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe.23 If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all;25 the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.27 If any man speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and that in turn; and let one interpret:28 but if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.29 And let the prophets speak by two or three, and let the others discern.30 But if a revelation be made to another sitting by, let the first keep silence.31 For ye all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted;32 and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets;33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,34 let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law.35 And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.36 What? was it from you that the word of God went forth? or came it unto you alone?37 If any man thinketh himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him take knowledge of the things which I write unto you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.38 But if any man is ignorant, let him be ignorant.39 Wherefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.40 But let all things be done decently and in order.
