1 Corintios 14

El hablar en lenguas

1 Seguid el amor y procurad los dones espirituales, pero sobre todo que profeticéis.2 El que habla en lenguas no habla a los hombres, sino a Dios, pues nadie lo entiende, aunque por el Espíritu habla misterios.3 Pero el que profetiza habla a los hombres para edificación, exhortación y consolación.4 El que habla en lengua extraña, a sí mismo se edifica; pero el que profetiza, edifica a la iglesia.

5 Yo desearía que todos vosotros hablarais en lenguas, pero más aún que profetizarais, porque mayor es el que profetiza que el que habla en lenguas, a no ser que las interprete para que la iglesia reciba edificación.
6 Ahora pues, hermanos, si yo voy a vosotros hablando en lenguas, ¿qué os aprovechará, si no os hablo con revelación, con conocimiento, con profecía o con doctrina?7 Ciertamente, las cosas inanimadas que producen sonidos, como la flauta o la cítara, si no dieran notas distintas, ¿cómo se sabría lo que se toca con la flauta o con la cítara?8 Y si la trompeta diera un sonido incierto, ¿quién se prepararía para la batalla?9 Así también vosotros, si por la lengua que habláis no dais palabra bien comprensible, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que decís?, porque sería como si hablarais al aire.10 Tantas clases de idiomas hay seguramente en el mundo, y ninguno de ellos carece de significado.11 Pero si yo ignoro el significado de las palabras, seré como un extranjero para el que habla, y el que habla será como un extranjero para mí.

12 Así pues, ya que anheláis los dones espirituales, procurad abundar en aquellos que sirvan para la edificación de la iglesia.
13 Por lo tanto, el que habla en lengua extraña, pida en oración poder interpretarla.14 Si yo oro en lengua desconocida, mi espíritu ora, pero mi entendimiento queda sin fruto.15 ¿Qué, pues? Oraré con el espíritu, pero oraré también con el entendimiento; cantaré con el espíritu, pero cantaré también con el entendimiento,16 porque si bendices sólo con el espíritu, el que ocupa lugar de simple oyente, ¿cómo dirá «Amén» a tu acción de gracias?, pues no sabe lo que has dicho.17 Tú, a la verdad, bien das gracias; pero el otro no es edificado.18 Doy gracias a Dios que hablo en lenguas más que todos vosotros;

19 pero en la iglesia prefiero hablar cinco palabras con mi entendimiento, para enseñar también a otros, que diez mil palabras en lengua desconocida.
20 Hermanos, no seáis niños en el modo de pensar, sino sed niños en cuanto a la malicia y maduros en cuanto al modo de pensar.21 En la Ley está escrito: «En otras lenguas y con otros labios hablaré a este pueblo; y ni aun así me oirán, dice el Señor.»22 Así que las lenguas son por señal, no a los creyentes, sino a los incrédulos; pero la profecía, no a los incrédulos, sino a los creyentes.23 Si, pues, toda la iglesia se reúne en un lugar, y todos hablan en lenguas, y entran indoctos o incrédulos, ¿no dirán que estáis locos?24 Pero si todos profetizan, y entra algún incrédulo o indocto, por todos es convencido, por todos es juzgado;

25 lo oculto de su corazón se hace manifiesto; y así, postrándose sobre el rostro, adorará a Dios, declarando que verdaderamente Dios está entre vosotros.
26 Entonces, hermanos, ¿qué podemos decir? Cuando os reunís, cada uno de vosotros tiene salmo, tiene doctrina, tiene lengua, tiene revelación, tiene interpretación. Hágase todo para edificación.27 Si alguien habla en lengua extraña, que sean dos o a lo más tres, y por turno; y que uno interprete.28 Y si no hay intérprete, calle en la iglesia, y hable para sí mismo y para Dios.29 Asimismo, los profetas hablen dos o tres, y los demás juzguen lo que ellos dicen.30 Y si algo le es revelado a otro que está sentado, calle el primero.31 Podéis profetizar todos, uno por uno, para que todos aprendan y todos sean exhortados.32 Los espíritus de los profetas están sujetos a los profetas,

33 pues Dios no es Dios de confusión, sino de paz.
Como en todas las iglesias de los santos,34 vuestras mujeres callen en las congregaciones, porque no les es permitido hablar, sino que deben estar sujetas, como también la Ley lo dice.

35 Y si quieren aprender algo, pregunten en casa a sus maridos, porque es indecoroso que una mujer hable en la congregación.
36 ¿Acaso ha salido de vosotros la palabra de Dios, o sólo a vosotros ha llegado?37 Si alguno se cree profeta o espiritual, reconozca que lo que os escribo son mandamientos del Señor;

38 pero si alguien lo ignora, que lo ignore.
39 Así que, hermanos, procurad profetizar y no impidáis el hablar en lenguas;

40 pero hágase todo decentemente y con orden.

Speaking Unknown Languages //and Prophesying

1 Love should be your guide. Be eager to have the gifts that come from the Holy Spirit, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 If you speak languages that others don't know, God will understand what you are saying, though no one else will know what you mean. You will be talking about mysteries that only the Spirit understands.

3 But when you prophesy, you will be understood, and others will be helped. They will be encouraged and made to feel better.
4 By speaking languages that others don't know, you help only yourself. But by prophesying you help everyone in the church.

5 I am glad for you to speak unknown languages, although I prefer that you would prophesy. In fact, prophesying does much more good than speaking unknown languages, unless someone can help the church by explaining what you mean.
6 My friends, what good would it do, if I came and spoke unknown languages to you and didn't explain what I meant? How would I help you, unless I told you what God had shown me or gave you some knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If all musical instruments sounded alike, how would you know the difference between a flute and a harp?

8 If a bugle call isn't clear, how would you know to get ready for battle?
9 This is how it is when you speak unknown languages. If no one can understand what you are talking about, you will only be talking to the wind. 10 There are many different languages in this world, and all of them make sense. 11 But if I don't understand the language that someone is using, we will be like foreigners to each other.

12 If you really want spiritual gifts, choose the ones that will be most helpful to the church.
13 When we speak languages that others don't know, we should pray for the power to explain what we mean. 14 For example, if I use an unknown language in my prayers, my spirit prays but my mind is useless.

15 Then what should I do? There are times when I should pray with my spirit, and times when I should pray with my mind. Sometimes I should sing with my spirit, and at other times I should sing with my mind.
16 Suppose some strangers are in your worship service, when you are praising God with your spirit. If they don't understand you, how will they know to say, “Amen”? 17 You may be worshiping God in a wonderful way, but no one else will be helped. 18 I thank God that I speak unknown languages more than any of you.

19 But words that make sense can help the church. This is why in church I would rather speak five words that make sense than to speak 10,000 words in a language that others don't know.
20 My friends, stop thinking like children. Think like mature people and be as innocent as tiny babies.

21 t In the Scriptures the Lord says,
“I will use strangers
who speak unknown languages
to talk to my people.
They will speak to them
in foreign languages,
but still my people
won't listen to me.”
22 Languages others don't know may mean something to unbelievers, but not to the Lord's followers. Prophecy, on the other hand, is for followers, not for unbelievers. 23 Suppose everyone in your worship service started speaking unknown languages, and some outsiders or some unbelievers come in. Won't they think you are crazy? 24 But suppose all of you are prophesying when those unbelievers and outsiders come in. They will realize that they are sinners, and they will want to change their ways because of what you are saying.

25 They will tell what is hidden in their hearts. Then they will kneel down and say to God, “We are certain that you are with these people.”

Worship Must Be Orderly

28 If no one can explain, you must keep silent in church and speak only to yourself and to God.
29 Two or three persons may prophesy, and everyone else must listen carefully. 30 If someone sitting there receives a message from God, the speaker must stop and let the other person speak. 31 Let only one person speak at a time, then all of you will learn something and be encouraged. 32 A prophet should be willing to stop and let someone else speak.

33 God wants everything to be done peacefully and in order.
When God's people meet in church, 34 the women must not be allowed to speak. They must keep quiet and listen, as the Law of Moses teaches.

35 If there is something they want to know, they can ask their husbands when they get home. It is disgraceful for women to speak in church.

36 God's message did not start with you people, and you are not the only ones it has reached.
37 If you think of yourself as a prophet or a spiritual person, you will know I am writing only what the Lord has commanded. 38 So don't pay attention to anyone who ignores what I am writing. 39 My friends, be eager to prophesy and don't stop anyone from speaking languages that others don't know. 40 But do everything properly and in order.
