1 Corintios 14

Lenguas y profecía

1  ¡Que el amor sea su meta más alta! Pero también deberían desear las capacidades especiales que da el Espíritu, sobre todo la capacidad de profetizar. 2 Pues, si alguien tiene la capacidad de hablar en lenguas,t le hablará sólo a Dios, dado que la gente no podrá entenderle. Hablará por el poder del Espíritu,t pero todo será un misterio. 3 En cambio el que profetiza fortalece a otros, los anima y los consuela. 4 La persona que habla en lenguas se fortalece a sí misma, pero el que dice una palabra de profecía fortalece a toda la iglesia.

5 Yo desearía que todos pudieran hablar en lenguas, pero más aún me gustaría que todos pudieran profetizar. Pues la profecía es superior que hablar en lenguas, a menos que alguien interprete lo que se dice, para que toda la iglesia se fortalezca.

6 Amados hermanos, si yo fuera a visitarlos y les hablara en un idioma desconocido,t ¿de qué les serviría a ustedes? En cambio, si les llevo una revelación o un conocimiento especial o una profecía o una enseñanza, eso sí les sería de ayuda. 7 Aun los instrumentos inanimados como la flauta y el arpa, tienen que emitir sonidos nítidos, o nadie reconocerá la melodía. 8 Si el toque de trompeta no es entendible, ¿cómo sabrán los soldados que se les llama a la batalla?

9 Lo mismo ocurre con ustedes. Si hablan a la gente con palabras que no entienden, ¿cómo podrían saber lo que ustedes dicen? Igual estarían hablando al viento.

10 Hay muchos idiomas diferentes en el mundo, y cada uno tiene significado; 11 pero si no entiendo un idioma, soy un extranjero para el que lo habla, y el que lo habla es un extranjero para mí. 12 Lo mismo ocurre con ustedes. Ya que están tan deseosos de tener las capacidades especiales que da el Espíritu, procuren las que fortalecerán a toda la iglesia.

13 Por lo tanto, el que habla en lenguas también debería pedir en oración la capacidad de interpretar lo que se ha dicho. 14 Pues, si oro en lenguas, mi espíritu ora, pero yo no entiendo lo que digo.

15 ¿Qué debo hacer entonces? Oraré en el espíritut y también oraré con palabras que entiendo. Cantaré en el espíritu y también cantaré con palabras que entiendo. 16 Pues, si alabas a Dios sólo en el espíritu, ¿cómo podrán los que no te entienden alabar a Dios contigo? ¿Cómo podrán unirse a tus agradecimientos cuando no entienden lo que dices? 17 Tú darás gracias muy bien, pero eso no fortalecerá a la gente que te oye.

18 Yo le agradezco a Dios que hablo en lenguas más que cualquiera de ustedes; 19 pero en una reunión de la iglesia, para ayudar a otros preferiría hablar cinco palabras comprensibles que diez mil palabras en un idioma desconocido.

20 Amados hermanos, no sean infantiles en su comprensión de estas cosas. Sean inocentes como bebés en cuanto a la maldad pero maduros en la comprensión de asuntos como éstos.

21 En las Escriturast está escrito:
«Hablaré a mi propio pueblo
en idiomas extraños
y mediante labios de extranjeros.
Pero aun así, no me escucharán»t,
dice el SEÑOR.

22 Así que, como ven, el hablar en lenguas es una señal no para los creyentes sino para los incrédulos. La profecía, sin embargo, es para el beneficio de los creyentes, no de los incrédulos. 23 Aun así, si los incrédulos o la gente que no entiende esas cosas entran en la reunión de la iglesia y oyen a todos hablando en un idioma desconocido, pensarán que ustedes están locos; 24 pero si todos ustedes están profetizando, y los incrédulos o la gente que no entiende esas cosas entran en la reunión, serán convencidos de pecado y juzgados por lo que ustedes dicen. 25 Al escuchar, sus pensamientos secretos quedarán al descubierto y caerán de rodillas y adorarán a Dios declarando: «En verdad, Dios está aquí entre ustedes».

Un llamado a adorar con orden

26 Ahora bien, mis hermanos, hagamos un resumen. Cuando se reúnan, uno de ustedes cantará, otro enseñará, otro contará alguna revelación especial que Dios le haya dado, otro hablará en lenguas y otro interpretará lo que se dice; pero cada cosa que se haga debe fortalecer a cada uno de ustedes.

27 No más de dos o tres deberían hablar en lenguas. Deben hablar uno a la vez y que alguien interprete lo que ellos digan. 28 Pero, si no hay nadie presente que pueda interpretar, ellos deberán guardar silencio en la reunión de la iglesia y hablar en lenguas a Dios en forma privada.

29 Que dos o tres personas profeticen y que los demás evalúen lo que se dice. 30 Pero, si alguien está profetizando y otra persona recibe una revelación del Señor, el que está hablando debe callarse. 31 De esa manera, todos los que profeticen tendrán su turno para hablar, uno después de otro, para que todos aprendan y sean alentados. 32 Recuerden que la gente que profetiza está en control de su espíritu y puede turnarse con otros. 33 Pues Dios no es Dios de desorden sino de paz, como en todas las reuniones del pueblo santo de Dios.t

34 Las mujeres deben guardar silencio durante las reuniones de la iglesia. No es apropiado que hablen. Deben ser sumisas, tal como dice la ley. 35 Si tienen preguntas, que le pregunten a su marido en casa, porque no es apropiado que las mujeres hablen en las reuniones de la iglesia.t

36 ¿O acaso piensan, corintios, que la palabra de Dios se originó con ustedes? ¿Son ustedes los únicos a quienes fue entregada? 37 Si alguien afirma ser profeta o piensa que es espiritual, debería reconocer que lo que digo es un mandato del Señor mismo; 38 pero si no lo reconoce, él tampoco será reconocido.t

39 Por lo tanto, mis amados hermanos, con todo corazón deseen profetizar y no prohíban que se hable en lenguas; 40 pero asegúrense de que todo se haga de forma apropiada y con orden.

Speaking Unknown Languages //and Prophesying

1 Love should be your guide. Be eager to have the gifts that come from the Holy Spirit, especially the gift of prophecy. 2 If you speak languages that others don't know, God will understand what you are saying, though no one else will know what you mean. You will be talking about mysteries that only the Spirit understands.

3 But when you prophesy, you will be understood, and others will be helped. They will be encouraged and made to feel better.
4 By speaking languages that others don't know, you help only yourself. But by prophesying you help everyone in the church.

5 I am glad for you to speak unknown languages, although I prefer that you would prophesy. In fact, prophesying does much more good than speaking unknown languages, unless someone can help the church by explaining what you mean.
6 My friends, what good would it do, if I came and spoke unknown languages to you and didn't explain what I meant? How would I help you, unless I told you what God had shown me or gave you some knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If all musical instruments sounded alike, how would you know the difference between a flute and a harp?

8 If a bugle call isn't clear, how would you know to get ready for battle?
9 This is how it is when you speak unknown languages. If no one can understand what you are talking about, you will only be talking to the wind. 10 There are many different languages in this world, and all of them make sense. 11 But if I don't understand the language that someone is using, we will be like foreigners to each other.

12 If you really want spiritual gifts, choose the ones that will be most helpful to the church.
13 When we speak languages that others don't know, we should pray for the power to explain what we mean. 14 For example, if I use an unknown language in my prayers, my spirit prays but my mind is useless.

15 Then what should I do? There are times when I should pray with my spirit, and times when I should pray with my mind. Sometimes I should sing with my spirit, and at other times I should sing with my mind.
16 Suppose some strangers are in your worship service, when you are praising God with your spirit. If they don't understand you, how will they know to say, “Amen”? 17 You may be worshiping God in a wonderful way, but no one else will be helped. 18 I thank God that I speak unknown languages more than any of you.

19 But words that make sense can help the church. This is why in church I would rather speak five words that make sense than to speak 10,000 words in a language that others don't know.
20 My friends, stop thinking like children. Think like mature people and be as innocent as tiny babies.

21 t In the Scriptures the Lord says,
“I will use strangers
who speak unknown languages
to talk to my people.
They will speak to them
in foreign languages,
but still my people
won't listen to me.”
22 Languages others don't know may mean something to unbelievers, but not to the Lord's followers. Prophecy, on the other hand, is for followers, not for unbelievers. 23 Suppose everyone in your worship service started speaking unknown languages, and some outsiders or some unbelievers come in. Won't they think you are crazy? 24 But suppose all of you are prophesying when those unbelievers and outsiders come in. They will realize that they are sinners, and they will want to change their ways because of what you are saying.

25 They will tell what is hidden in their hearts. Then they will kneel down and say to God, “We are certain that you are with these people.”

Worship Must Be Orderly

28 If no one can explain, you must keep silent in church and speak only to yourself and to God.
29 Two or three persons may prophesy, and everyone else must listen carefully. 30 If someone sitting there receives a message from God, the speaker must stop and let the other person speak. 31 Let only one person speak at a time, then all of you will learn something and be encouraged. 32 A prophet should be willing to stop and let someone else speak.

33 God wants everything to be done peacefully and in order.
When God's people meet in church, 34 the women must not be allowed to speak. They must keep quiet and listen, as the Law of Moses teaches.

35 If there is something they want to know, they can ask their husbands when they get home. It is disgraceful for women to speak in church.

36 God's message did not start with you people, and you are not the only ones it has reached.
37 If you think of yourself as a prophet or a spiritual person, you will know I am writing only what the Lord has commanded. 38 So don't pay attention to anyone who ignores what I am writing. 39 My friends, be eager to prophesy and don't stop anyone from speaking languages that others don't know. 40 But do everything properly and in order.
