Cibi sacrificati agl’idoli.

1 Mi avete anche chiesto se è permesso mangiare cibi sacrificati agl’idoli. Su questa questione tutti pensano di saperne abbastanza.2 Però questa sicurezza di sapere ci fa sentire importanti, mentre ciò di cui abbiamo davvero bisogno, per edificare la Chiesa, è l’amore.
Se qualcuno pensa di conoscere tutte le risposte, in realtà dimostra soltanto la sua ignoranza.3 Ma chi ama davvero Dio è da lui conosciuto.4 A questo punto, che devo dirvi? Si può mangiare la carne sacrificata agl’idoli? Ebbene, noi tutti sappiamo che un idolo non è un dio; che c’è soltanto un Dio e nessun altro.5 Anche supponendo che ci siano cosiddetti « dèi » sia in cielo che sulla terra,6 noi sappiamo benissimo che per noi c’è un solo Dio, il Padre, che ha creato tutte le cose, ed è per lui che noi viviamo. E vi è un solo Signore, Gesù Cristo, per mezzo del quale esiste ogni cosa, noi compresi.7 Capita, però, che alcuni cristiani non si rendano conto di questo. Per tutta la loro vita sono stati abituati a credere agl’idoli e mangiano questa carne come se fosse sacrificata ad un dio vero e proprio; così, quando la mangiano, si sentono turbati, perché la loro coscienza è debole.8 Ma non sarà certo un cibo a renderci graditi a Dio. Non perdiamo niente se non ne mangiamo, e non ne guadagniamo niente se ne mangiamo.9 Ma bada che questa tua libertà di mangiare cibo offerto agl’idoli non turbi i credenti più deboli nella fede!10 Ecco che cosa potrebbe accadere qualcuno, vedendoti mangiare questo cibo alla mensa di un tempio d’idoli, potrebbe sentirsi spinto ad imitarti, anche se è convinto di sbagliare. Per te, che sei sicuro di far bene, tutto è a posto, ma per lui è peccato!11 Così, per causa tua, perché tu sai che non c’è niente di male in ciò che fai, ci rimetterà un fratello più debole, un fratello per cui Cristo è morto!12 In questo modo, se pecchi contro i fratelli, invogliandoli a fare qualcosa di cui non sono convinti, pecchi contro Cristo stesso.13 Perciò, se mangiare la carne offerta agl’idoli spingerà mio fratello a peccare, non mangerò mai più carne, perché non voglio causargli un danno.

1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but love edifieth.2 If any man thinketh that he knoweth anything, he knoweth not yet as he ought to know;3 but if any man loveth God, the same is known by him.4 Concerning therefore the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no God but one.5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth; as there are gods many, and lords many;6 yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him.7 Howbeit there is not in all men that knowledge: but some, being used until now to the idol, eat as of a thing sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.8 But food will not commend us to God: neither, if we eat not, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better.9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to the weak.10 For if a man see thee who hast knowledge sitting at meat in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols?11 For through thy knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother for whose sake Christ died.12 And thus, sinning against the brethren, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, ye sin against Christ.13 Wherefore, if meat causeth my brother to stumble, I will eat no flesh for evermore, that I cause not my brother to stumble.
