Les viandes sacrifiées aux idoles
1 tPour ce qui concerne les viandes sacrifiées aux idoles, nous savons que tous, nous avons de la connaissance. La connaissance gonfle d’orgueil, mais l’amour construit. 2 tSi quelqu’un pense connaître quelque chose, il ne connaît pas encore comme il faut connaître. 3 tMais si quelqu’un aime Dieu, celui-là est connu de lui. 4 tDonc, pour ce qui concerne la consommation des viandes sacrifiées aux idoles, nous savons qu’il n’y a pas d’idole dans le monde et qu’il n’y a de Dieu qu’un seul.
5 tCar s’il est vrai qu’il y a ce qu’on appelle des dieux, soit dans le ciel, soit sur la terre, – et de fait il y a beaucoup de dieux et beaucoup de seigneurs –
6 tnéanmoins, pour nous, il n’y a qu’un seul Dieu, le Père,
de qui tout vient et pour qui nous sommes,
et un seul Seigneur, Jésus-Christ,
par qui tout existe et par qui nous sommes.
7 tMais tous n’ont pas cette connaissance. En effet, quelques-uns, encore tenus par l’habitude des idoles, mangent de ces viandes en les considérant comme sacrifiées aux idoles ; et leur conscience, qui est faible, en est souillée. 8 tOr ce n’est pas un aliment qui nous rapprochera de Dieu : si nous n’en mangeons pas, nous n’avons rien de moins ; si nous en mangeons, nous n’avons rien de plus. 9 tPrenez garde cependant que votre droit ne devienne pas une pierre d’achoppement pour les faibles. 10 tCar si quelqu’un te voit, toi qui as de la connaissance, à table dans un temple d’idoles, la construction de sa conscience ne va-t-elle pas l’amener, lui qui est faible, à manger des viandes sacrifiées aux idoles ? 11 tAinsi le faible se perd à cause de ta connaissance, lui, ce frère pour qui le Christ est mort ! 12 tEn péchant de la sorte contre les frères et en heurtant leur conscience, qui est faible, c’est contre le Christ que vous péchez. 13 tC’est pourquoi, si un aliment doit causer la chute de mon frère, jamais plus je ne mangerai de viande, afin de ne pas causer la chute de mon frère.

1 Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but love edifieth.2 If any man thinketh that he knoweth anything, he knoweth not yet as he ought to know;3 but if any man loveth God, the same is known by him.4 Concerning therefore the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no God but one.5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth; as there are gods many, and lords many;6 yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him.7 Howbeit there is not in all men that knowledge: but some, being used until now to the idol, eat as of a thing sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.8 But food will not commend us to God: neither, if we eat not, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better.9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to the weak.10 For if a man see thee who hast knowledge sitting at meat in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols?11 For through thy knowledge he that is weak perisheth, the brother for whose sake Christ died.12 And thus, sinning against the brethren, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, ye sin against Christ.13 Wherefore, if meat causeth my brother to stumble, I will eat no flesh for evermore, that I cause not my brother to stumble.
