1. Könige 19

1 Und Ahab berichtete der Isebel alles, was Elia getan hatte, und alles, wie er alle Propheten mit dem Schwerte getötet hätte.2 Da sandte Isebel einen Boten zu Elia und ließ ihm sagen: So sollen mir die Götter tun und so hinzufügen, wenn ich nicht morgen um diese Zeit dein Leben dem Leben eines von ihnen gleich mache!3 Und als er das sah, machte er sich auf und ging fort um seines Lebens willen, und kam nach Beerseba, das zu Juda gehört; und er ließ seinen Knaben dort zurück.4 Er selbst aber ging in die Wüste, eine Tagereise weit, und kam und setzte sich unter einen Ginsterstrauch. Und er bat, daß seine Seele stürbe, und sprach: Es ist genug; nimm nun, Jehova, meine Seele, denn ich bin nicht besser als meine Väter.5 Und er legte sich nieder und schlief ein unter dem Ginsterstrauch. Und siehe da, ein Engel rührte ihn an und sprach zu ihm: Stehe auf, iß!6 Und als er hinblickte, siehe, da lag zu seinen Häupten ein Kuchen, auf heißen Steinen gebacken, und ein Krug Wasser. Und er aß und trank und legte sich wieder hin.7 Und der Engel Jehovas kam zum zweiten Male wieder und rührte ihn an und sprach: Stehe auf, iß! Denn der Weg ist zu weit für dich.8 Und er stand auf und aß und trank, und er ging in der Kraft dieser Speise vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte bis an den Berg Gottes, den Horeb.9 Und er ging daselbst in die Höhle und übernachtete daselbst. Und siehe, das Wort Jehovas geschah zu ihm, und er sprach zu ihm: Was tust du hier, Elia?10 Und er sprach: Ich habe sehr geeifert für Jehova, den Gott der Heerscharen; denn die Kinder Israel haben deinen Bund verlassen, deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten mit dem Schwerte getötet; und ich allein bin übriggeblieben, und sie trachten danach, mir das Leben zu nehmen.11 Und er sprach: Gehe hinaus und stelle dich auf den Berg vor Jehova! Und siehe, Jehova ging vorüber, und ein Wind, groß und stark, zerriß die Berge und zerschmetterte die Felsen vor Jehova her; Jehova war nicht in dem Winde. Und nach dem Winde ein Erdbeben; Jehova war nicht in dem Erdbeben.12 Und nach dem Erdbeben ein Feuer; Jehova war nicht in dem Feuer. Und nach dem Feuer der Ton eines leisen Säuselns.13 Und es geschah, als Elia es hörte, da verhüllte er sein Angesicht mit seinem Mantel, und ging hinaus und stellte sich an den Eingang der Höhle. Und siehe, eine Stimme geschah zu ihm also: Was tust du hier, Elia?14 Und er sprach: Ich habe sehr geeifert für Jehova, den Gott der Heerscharen; denn die Kinder Israel haben deinen Bund verlassen, deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten mit dem Schwerte getötet; und ich allein bin übriggeblieben, und sie trachten danach, mir das Leben zu nehmen!15 Und Jehova sprach zu ihm: Gehe, kehre zurück deines Weges, nach der Wüste von Damaskus; und wenn du angekommen bist, so salbe Hasael zum König über Syrien.16 Und Jehu, den Sohn Nimsis, sollst du zum König über Israel salben; und Elisa, den Sohn Saphats, von Abel-Mehola, sollst du zum Propheten salben an deiner Statt.17 Und es soll geschehen: wer dem Schwerte Hasaels entrinnt, den wird Jehu töten; und wer dem Schwerte Jehus entrinnt, den wird Elisa töten.18 Aber ich habe siebentausend in Israel übriggelassen, alle die Knie, die sich nicht vor dem Baal gebeugt haben, und jeden Mund, der ihn nicht geküßt hat.19 Und er ging von dannen und fand Elisa, den Sohn Saphats, welcher gerade pflügte mit zwölf Joch Rindern vor sich her, und er war bei dem zwölften; und Elia ging zu ihm hin und warf seinen Mantel auf ihn.20 Und er verließ die Rinder und lief Elia nach und sprach: Laß mich doch meinen Vater und meine Mutter küssen, so will ich dir nachfolgen. Und er sprach zu ihm: Gehe, kehre zurück! Denn was habe ich dir getan?21 Und er kehrte von ihm zurück und nahm das Joch Rinder und schlachtete es, und mit dem Geschirr der Rinder kochte er das Fleisch derselben und gab es den Leuten, und sie aßen; und er machte sich auf und folgte Elia nach und diente ihm.

Elijah Runs for His Life

1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, including a detailed account of how he killed all the prophets with the sword.

2 Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this warning,t “May the gods judge me severelyt if by this time tomorrow I do not take your life as you did theirs!”t
3 Elijah was afraid,s so he got up and fled for his life to Beer Sheba in Judah. He left his servant there,4 while he went a day’s journey into the desert. He went and sat down under a shrubt and asked the Lord to take his life:t “I’ve had enough! Now, O Lord, take my life. After all, I’m no better than my ancestors.”t5 He stretched outt and fell asleep under the shrub. All of a sudden an angelic messengert touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”6 He looked and right there by his head was a cake baking on hot coals and a jug of water. He ate and drank and then slept some more.t7 The Lord’s angelic messenger came back again, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, for otherwise you won’t be able to make the journey.”t

8 So he got up and ate and drank. That meal gave him the strength to travel forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
9 He went into a cave there and spent the night. All of a sudden the Lord spoke to him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”10 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyalt to the Lord, the sovereign God,t even though the Israelites have abandoned the agreement they made with you,t torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”t

11 The Lordt said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. Look, the Lord is ready to pass by.”
A very powerful wind went before the Lord, digging into the mountain and causing landslides,t but the Lord was not in the wind. After the windstorm there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.12 After the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a soft whisper.t13 When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his robe and went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. All of a suddent a voice asked him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”14 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyalt to the Lord, the sovereign God,t even though the Israelites have abandoned the agreement they made with you,t torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”t15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came and then head for the Desert of Damascus. Go and anoint Hazael king over Syria.16 You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to take your place as prophet.17 Jehu will kill anyone who escapes Hazael’s sword, and Elisha will kill anyone who escapes Jehu’s sword.

18 I still have left in Israel seven thousand followers who have not bowed their knees to Baal or kissed the images of him.”t
19 Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen; he was near the twelfth pair. Elijah passed by him and threw his robe over him.20 He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, then I will follow you.” Elijaht said to him, “Go back! Indeed, what have I done to you?”

21 Elishat went back and took his pair of oxen and slaughtered them. He cooked the meat over a fire that he made by burning the harness and yoke.t He gave the people meat and they ate. Then he got up and followed Elijah and became his assistant.
