1 Kings 19

第19章

1 アハブはエリヤのしたすべての事、また彼がすべての預言者を刀で殺したことをイゼベルに告げたので、2 イゼベルは使者をエリヤにつかわして言った、「もしわたしが、あすの今ごろ、あなたの命をあの人々のひとりの命のようにしていないならば、神々がどんなにでも、わたしを罰してくださるように」。3 そこでエリヤは恐れて、自分の命を救うために立って逃げ、ユダに属するベエルシバへ行って、しもべをそこに残し、4 自分は一日の道のりほど荒野にはいって行って、れだまの木の下に座し、自分の死を求めて言った、「主よ、もはや、じゅうぶんです。今わたしの命を取ってください。わたしは先祖にまさる者ではありません」。5 彼はれだまの木の下に伏して眠ったが、天の使が彼にさわり、「起きて食べなさい」と言ったので、6 起きて見ると、頭のそばに、焼け石の上で焼いたパン一個と、一びんの水があった。彼は食べ、かつ飲んでまた寝た。7 主の使は再びきて、彼にさわって言った、「起きて食べなさい。道が遠くて耐えられないでしょうから」。8 彼は起きて食べ、かつ飲み、その食物で力づいて四十日四十夜行って、神の山ホレブに着いた。9 その所で彼はほら穴にはいって、そこに宿ったが、主の言葉が彼に臨んで、彼に言われた、「エリヤよ、あなたはここで何をしているのか」。10 彼は言った、「わたしは万軍の神、主のために非常に熱心でありました。イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、刀をもってあなたの預言者たちを殺したのです。ただわたしだけ残りましたが、彼らはわたしの命を取ろうとしています」。11 主は言われた、「出て、山の上で主の前に、立ちなさい」。その時主は通り過ぎられ、主の前に大きな強い風が吹き、山を裂き、岩を砕いた。しかし主は風の中におられなかった。風の後に地震があったが、地震の中にも主はおられなかった。12 地震の後に火があったが、火の中にも主はおられなかった。火の後に静かな細い声が聞えた。13 エリヤはそれを聞いて顔を外套に包み、出てほら穴の口に立つと、彼に語る声が聞えた、「エリヤよ、あなたはここで何をしているのか」。14 彼は言った、「わたしは万軍の神、主のために非常に熱心でありました。イスラエルの人々はあなたの契約を捨て、あなたの祭壇をこわし、刀であなたの預言者たちを殺したからです。ただわたしだけ残りましたが、彼らはわたしの命を取ろうとしています」。15 主は彼に言われた、「あなたの道を帰って行って、ダマスコの荒野におもむき、ダマスコに着いて、ハザエルに油を注ぎ、スリヤの王としなさい。16 またニムシの子エヒウに油を注いでイスラエルの王としなさい。またアベルメホラのシャパテの子エリシャに油を注いで、あなたに代って預言者としなさい。17 ハザエルのつるぎをのがれる者をエヒウが殺し、エヒウのつるぎをのがれる者をエリシャが殺すであろう。18 また、わたしはイスラエルのうちに七千人を残すであろう。皆バアルにひざをかがめず、それに口づけしない者である」。19 さてエリヤはそこを去って行って、シャパテの子エリシャに会った。彼は十二くびきの牛を前に行かせ、自分は十二番目のくびきと共にいて耕していた。エリヤは彼のかたわらを通り過ぎて外套を彼の上にかけた。20 エリシャは牛を捨て、エリヤのあとに走ってきて言った、「わたしの父母に口づけさせてください。そして後あなたに従いましょう」。エリヤは彼に言った、「行ってきなさい。わたしはあなたに何をしましたか」。21 エリシャは彼を離れて帰り、ひとくびきの牛を取って殺し、牛のくびきを燃やしてその肉を煮、それを民に与えて食べさせ、立って行ってエリヤに従い、彼に仕えた。

Elijah Runs for His Life

1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, including a detailed account of how he killed all the prophets with the sword.

2 Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this warning,t “May the gods judge me severelyt if by this time tomorrow I do not take your life as you did theirs!”t
3 Elijah was afraid,s so he got up and fled for his life to Beer Sheba in Judah. He left his servant there,4 while he went a day’s journey into the desert. He went and sat down under a shrubt and asked the Lord to take his life:t “I’ve had enough! Now, O Lord, take my life. After all, I’m no better than my ancestors.”t5 He stretched outt and fell asleep under the shrub. All of a sudden an angelic messengert touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”6 He looked and right there by his head was a cake baking on hot coals and a jug of water. He ate and drank and then slept some more.t7 The Lord’s angelic messenger came back again, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, for otherwise you won’t be able to make the journey.”t

8 So he got up and ate and drank. That meal gave him the strength to travel forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
9 He went into a cave there and spent the night. All of a sudden the Lord spoke to him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”10 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyalt to the Lord, the sovereign God,t even though the Israelites have abandoned the agreement they made with you,t torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”t

11 The Lordt said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. Look, the Lord is ready to pass by.”
A very powerful wind went before the Lord, digging into the mountain and causing landslides,t but the Lord was not in the wind. After the windstorm there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.12 After the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a soft whisper.t13 When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his robe and went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. All of a suddent a voice asked him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”14 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyalt to the Lord, the sovereign God,t even though the Israelites have abandoned the agreement they made with you,t torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”t15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came and then head for the Desert of Damascus. Go and anoint Hazael king over Syria.16 You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to take your place as prophet.17 Jehu will kill anyone who escapes Hazael’s sword, and Elisha will kill anyone who escapes Jehu’s sword.

18 I still have left in Israel seven thousand followers who have not bowed their knees to Baal or kissed the images of him.”t
19 Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen; he was near the twelfth pair. Elijah passed by him and threw his robe over him.20 He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, then I will follow you.” Elijaht said to him, “Go back! Indeed, what have I done to you?”

21 Elishat went back and took his pair of oxen and slaughtered them. He cooked the meat over a fire that he made by burning the harness and yoke.t He gave the people meat and they ate. Then he got up and followed Elijah and became his assistant.
