Elia på Horeb

1 Akab fortalte Jesabel om alt det Elia hadde gjort, og hvordan han hadde drept alle profetene med sverd. s2 Da sendte Jesabel en budbærer til Elia med disse ordene: Gudene la det gå meg ille både nå og siden om jeg ikke i morgen på denne tiden gjør med livet ditt som det er gjort med deres liv. 3 Da ble Elia redd. Han gjorde seg i stand og dro av sted for å berge livet. Og han kom til Be’er-Sjeba, som hører til Juda. Der lot han tjenestegutten sin bli tilbake.

4 Selv gikk han en dagsreise ut i ørkenen. Der satte han seg under en gyvelbusk, og han ønsket seg døden og sa: Det er nok! Ta nå mitt liv, Herre! For jeg er ikke bedre enn fedrene mine. s5 Så la han seg ned og sovnet under gyvelbusken. Da rørte en engel ved ham og sa til ham: Stå opp og et! 6 Da han så opp, fikk han se at ved hodet hans lå det en kake, stekt på hete steiner, og at det sto en krukke med vann. Og han åt og drakk og la seg ned igjen. 7 Men Herrens engel kom igjen andre gangen og rørte ved ham og sa: Stå opp og et! Ellers blir veien for lang for deg. 8 Da sto han opp og åt og drakk. Og styrket ved denne maten gikk han førti dager og førti netter, til han kom til Guds berg, Horeb. s

9 Der gikk han inn i hulen og ble der om natten. Og se, Herrens ord kom til ham. Han sa til ham: Hva vil du her, Elia? s10 Han svarte: Jeg har vært nidkjær for Herren, hærskarenes Gud. For Israels barn har forlatt din pakt. Dine altere har de revet ned, og dine profeter har de drept med sverd. Jeg er alene tilbake, og meg står de etter livet. s11 Han sa: Gå ut og stå på fjellet for Herrens åsyn! Og se, Herren gikk forbi. Foran ham for en stor og sterk storm som kløvde fjell og knuste klipper, men Herren var ikke i stormen. Etter stormen kom det et jordskjelv, men Herren var ikke i jordskjelvet. s12 Etter jordskjelvet kom det en ild, men Herren var ikke i ilden. Etter ilden kom lyden av en stille susing. s13 Da Elia hørte den, dekket han ansiktet med kappen og gikk ut og sto ved inngangen til hulen. Og se, en røst kom til ham og sa: Hva vil du her, Elia? s14 Han svarte: Jeg har vært nidkjær for Herren, hærskarenes Gud. For Israels barn har forlatt din pakt. Dine altere har de revet ned, og dine profeter har de drept med sverd. Jeg er alene tilbake, og meg står de etter livet. 15 Da sa Herren til ham: Gå tilbake og ta veien til ødemarken ved Damaskus. Gå inn i byen og salv Hasael til konge over Syria! s16 Jehu, Nimsis sønn, skal du salve til konge over Israel, og Elisja, Safats sønn, fra Abel-Mehola, skal du salve til profet i ditt sted. s17 Og det skal gå slik at den som slipper unna Hasaels sverd, skal Jehu drepe. Og den som slipper unna Jehus sverd, skal Elisja drepe. 18 Men jeg vil la sju tusen bli tilbake i Israel, alle som ikke har bøyd kne for Ba’al, og alle som ikke har kysset ham med sin munn. s

Elisja blir kalt til å etterfølge Elia

19 Da Elia nå gikk derfra, møtte han Elisja, Safats sønn, som holdt på å pløye. Tolv par okser gikk foran ham, og selv var han ved det tolvte paret. Og Elia gikk bort til ham og kastet kappen sin over ham. s20 Da forlot han oksene og sprang etter Elia og sa: La meg først få kysse min far og min mor, så vil jeg følge deg! Han svarte: Gå bare hjem! For hva har jeg gjort med deg? s21 Så forlot han ham og gikk hjem. Han tok de to oksene og slaktet dem, og med oksenes åk kokte han kjøttet og ga det til folket der, og de åt. Så gjorde han seg ferdig og fulgte Elia og tjente ham.

Elijah Runs for His Life

1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, including a detailed account of how he killed all the prophets with the sword.

2 Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah with this warning,t “May the gods judge me severelyt if by this time tomorrow I do not take your life as you did theirs!”t
3 Elijah was afraid,s so he got up and fled for his life to Beer Sheba in Judah. He left his servant there,4 while he went a day’s journey into the desert. He went and sat down under a shrubt and asked the Lord to take his life:t “I’ve had enough! Now, O Lord, take my life. After all, I’m no better than my ancestors.”t5 He stretched outt and fell asleep under the shrub. All of a sudden an angelic messengert touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”6 He looked and right there by his head was a cake baking on hot coals and a jug of water. He ate and drank and then slept some more.t7 The Lord’s angelic messenger came back again, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, for otherwise you won’t be able to make the journey.”t

8 So he got up and ate and drank. That meal gave him the strength to travel forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
9 He went into a cave there and spent the night. All of a sudden the Lord spoke to him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”10 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyalt to the Lord, the sovereign God,t even though the Israelites have abandoned the agreement they made with you,t torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”t

11 The Lordt said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. Look, the Lord is ready to pass by.”
A very powerful wind went before the Lord, digging into the mountain and causing landslides,t but the Lord was not in the wind. After the windstorm there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.12 After the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a soft whisper.t13 When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his robe and went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. All of a suddent a voice asked him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”14 He answered, “I have been absolutely loyalt to the Lord, the sovereign God,t even though the Israelites have abandoned the agreement they made with you,t torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left and now they want to take my life.”t15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came and then head for the Desert of Damascus. Go and anoint Hazael king over Syria.16 You must anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to take your place as prophet.17 Jehu will kill anyone who escapes Hazael’s sword, and Elisha will kill anyone who escapes Jehu’s sword.

18 I still have left in Israel seven thousand followers who have not bowed their knees to Baal or kissed the images of him.”t
19 Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen; he was near the twelfth pair. Elijah passed by him and threw his robe over him.20 He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, then I will follow you.” Elijaht said to him, “Go back! Indeed, what have I done to you?”

21 Elishat went back and took his pair of oxen and slaughtered them. He cooked the meat over a fire that he made by burning the harness and yoke.t He gave the people meat and they ate. Then he got up and followed Elijah and became his assistant.
