Últimas instrucciones de David

1 David ya estaba próximo a morir, así que le dio estas instrucciones a su hijo Salomón:
2 «Según el destino que a todos nos espera, pronto partiré de este mundo. ¡Cobra ánimo y pórtate como hombre! 3 Cumple los mandatos del Señor tu Dios; sigue sus sendas y obedece sus decretos, mandamientos, leyes y preceptos, los cuales están escritos en la *ley de Moisés. Así prosperarás en todo lo que hagas y por dondequiera que vayas, 4 y el Señor cumplirá esta promesa que me hizo: “Si tus descendientes cuidan su conducta y me son fieles con toda el *alma y de todo *corazón, nunca faltará un sucesor tuyo en el trono de Israel.”
5 »Ahora bien, tú mismo sabes que Joab hijo de Sarvia derramó sangre en tiempo de paz como si estuviera en guerra, y mató a Abner hijo de Ner y a Amasá hijo de Jéter, los dos comandantes de los ejércitos israelitas, manchándose así de sangre las manos.s 6 Por tanto, usa la cabeza y no lo dejes llegar a viejo y morir en *paz.s 7 En cambio, sé bondadoso con los hijos de Barzilay de Galaad y permíteles comer en tu mesa, pues ellos me ampararon cuando huía de tu hermano Absalón.
8 »También encárgate de Simí hijo de Guerá, ese benjaminita de Bajurín que me lanzó terribles maldiciones cuando me dirigía a Majanayin. Es cierto que, cuando fue al Jordán a recibirme, le juré por el Señor que no lo condenaría a muerte. 9 Sin embargo, no tienes ya por qué perdonarle la vida. Tú eres inteligente, y sabrás qué hacer con él; aunque ya está viejo, hazlo sufrir una muerte sangrienta.»s
10 David murió y fue sepultado en la ciudad que lleva su *nombre. 11 Había reinado siete años en Hebrón y treinta y tres en Jerusalén, así que en total reinó en Israel cuarenta años. 12 Lo sucedió en el trono su hijo Salomón, y así se consolidó firmemente su reino.

Salomón consolida el reino

13 Adonías hijo de Jaguit fue a ver a Betsabé, madre de Salomón, y Betsabé le preguntó:
—¿Vienes en son de *paz? —Sí —respondió él—; 14 tengo algo que comunicarle.
—Habla —contestó ella. 15 —Como usted sabe —dijo Adonías—, el reino me pertenecía, y todos los israelitas esperaban que yo llegara a ser rey. Pero ahora el reino ha pasado a mi hermano, que lo ha recibido por voluntad del Señor. 16 Pues bien, tengo una petición que hacerle, y espero que me la conceda.
—Continúa —dijo ella. 17 —Por favor, pídale usted al rey Salomón que me dé como esposa a Abisag la sunamita; a usted no se lo negará.
18 —Muy bien —contestó Betsabé—; le hablaré al rey en tu favor.
19 Betsabé fue a ver al rey Salomón para interceder en favor de Adonías. El rey se puso de pie para recibirla y se inclinó ante ella; luego se sentó en su trono y mandó que pusieran otro trono para su madre; y ella se sentó a la *derecha del rey.
20 —Quiero pedirte un pequeño favor —dijo ella—. Te ruego que no me lo niegues.
—Dime de qué se trata, madre mía. A ti no puedo negarte nada. 21 Ella continuó:
—Concédele a tu hermano Adonías casarse con Abisag la sunamita. 22 —Pero ¿cómo puedes pedirme semejante cosa? —respondió el rey a su madre—. Es mi hermano mayor, y cuenta con el apoyo del sacerdote Abiatar y de Joab hijo de Sarvia. ¡Realmente me estás pidiendo que le ceda el trono!
23 Dicho esto, el rey Salomón juró por el Señor: «¡Que Dios me castigue sin piedad si no hago que Adonías pague con su *vida por esa petición! 24 El Señor me ha establecido firmemente en el trono de mi padre, y conforme a su promesa me ha dado una dinastía. Por tanto, tan cierto como que él vive, ¡juro que hoy mismo Adonías morirá!»
25 En seguida, el rey Salomón le dio a Benaías hijo de Joyadá la orden de matar a Adonías. 26 Al sacerdote Abiatar, el rey mismo le ordenó: «Regresa a tus tierras en Anatot. Mereces la muerte, pero por el momento no voy a quitarte la vida, pues compartiste con David mi padre todas sus penurias, y en su presencia llevaste el arca del Señor omnipotente.» 27 Fue así como, al destituir Salomón a Abiatar del sacerdocio del Señor, se cumplió la palabra que el Señor había pronunciado en Siló contra la familia de Elí.
28 Joab había conspirado con Adonías, aunque no con Absalón, así que al oír que Adonías había muerto, fue a refugiarse en el santuario del Señor, agarrándose de los cuernos del altar. 29 Cuando le dijeron a Salomón que Joab había huido al santuario, y que estaba junto al altar, el rey le ordenó a Benaías hijo de Joyadá que fuera a matarlo. 30 Benaías fue al santuario del Señor y le dijo a Joab:
—El rey te ordena que salgas. —¡No! —respondió Joab—. ¡De aquí sólo me sacarán muerto! Benaías fue y le contó al rey lo que había dicho Joab. 31 —¡Pues dale gusto! —ordenó el rey—. ¡Mátalo y entiérralo! De ese modo me absolverás a mí y a mi familia de la sangre inocente que derramó Joab. 32 El Señor hará recaer sobre su cabeza la sangre que derramó, porque a espaldas de mi padre atacó Joab a Abner hijo de Ner, que era comandante del ejército de Israel, y a Amasá hijo de Jéter, que era comandante del ejército de Judá. Así mató a filo de espada a dos hombres que eran mejores y más justos que él. 33 ¡Que la culpa de esas muertes recaiga para siempre sobre la cabeza de Joab y de sus descendientes! ¡Pero que la paz del Señor esté por siempre con David y sus descendientes, y con su linaje y su trono!
34 Benaías hijo de Joyadá fue y mató a Joab, e hizo que lo sepultaran en su hacienda de la estepa. 35 Entonces el rey puso a Benaías hijo de Joyadá sobre el ejército en lugar de Joab, y al sacerdote Sadoc lo puso en lugar de Abiatar. 36 Luego mandó llamar a Simí y le dijo:
—Constrúyete una casa en Jerusalén, y quédate allí. No salgas a ninguna parte, 37 porque el día que salgas y cruces el arroyo de Cedrón, podrás darte por muerto. Y la culpa será tuya.
38 —De acuerdo —le respondió Simí al rey—. Yo estoy para servir a Su Majestad, y acataré sus órdenes.
Simí permaneció en Jerusalén por un buen tiempo, 39 pero tres años más tarde dos de sus esclavos escaparon a Gat, donde reinaba Aquis hijo de Macá. Cuando le avisaron a Simí que sus esclavos estaban en Gat, 40 aparejó su asno y se fue allá a buscarlos y traerlos de vuelta. 41 Al oír Salomón que Simí había ido de Jerusalén a Gat y había regresado, 42 lo mandó llamar y le dijo:
—Yo te hice jurar por el Señor, y te advertí: “El día que salgas a cualquier lugar, podrás darte por muerto.” Y tú dijiste que estabas de acuerdo y que obedecerías. 43 ¿Por qué, pues, no cumpliste con tu juramento al Señor ni obedeciste la orden que te di?
44 El rey también le dijo a Simí:
—Tú bien sabes cuánto daño le hiciste a mi padre David; ahora el Señor se vengará de ti por tu maldad. 45 En cambio, yo seré bendecido, y el trono de David permanecerá firme para siempre en presencia del Señor.
46 Acto seguido, el rey le dio la orden a Benaías hijo de Joyadá, y éste fue y mató a Simí. Así se consolidó el reino en manos de Salomón.

David’s Final Words to Solomon

1 When David was close to death,t he toldt Solomon his son:2 “I am about to die.t Be strong and become a man!3 Do the job the Lord your God has assigned yout by following his instructionst and obeyingt his rules, commandments, regulations, and laws as written in the law of Moses. Then you will succeed in all you do and seek to accomplish,t

4 and the Lord will fulfill his promise to me,t ‘If your descendants watch their stept and live faithfully in my presencet with all their heart and being,t then,’ he promised,t ‘you will not fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’t
5 “You know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me – how he murdered two commanders of the Israelite armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether.t During peacetime he struck them down like he would in battle;t when he shed their blood as if in battle, he stained his own belt and the sandals on his feet.t

6 Do to him what you think is appropriate,t but don’t let him live long and die a peaceful death.t

7 “Treat fairlyt the sons of Barzillai of Gilead and provide for their needs,t because they helped met when I had to flee from your brother Absalom.
8 “Note well, you still have to contend with Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim,t who tried to call down upon me a horrible judgment when I went to Mahanaim.t He came down and met me at the Jordan, and I solemnly promisedt him by the Lord, ‘I will not strike you downt with the sword.’

9 But nows don’t treat him as if he were innocent. You are a wise man and you know how to handle him;t make sure he has a bloody death.”t
10 Then David passed awayt and was buried in the city of David.s

11 David reigned over Israel forty years; he reigned in Hebron seven years, and in Jerusalems thirty-three years.

Solomon Secures the Throne

12 Solomon sat on his father David’s throne, and his royal authorityt was firmly solidified.
13 Haggith’s son Adonijah visited Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. She asked, “Do you come in peace?” He answered, “Yes.”t14 He added,t “I have something to say to you.” She replied, “Speak.”15 He said, “You know that the kingdomt was mine and all Israel considered me king.t But then the kingdom was given to my brother, for the Lord decided it should be his.t16 Now I’d like to ask you for just one thing. Please don’t refuse me.”t She said, “Go ahead and ask.”t17 He said, “Please ask King Solomon if he would give me Abishag the Shunammite as a wife, for he won’t refuse you.”t

18 Bathsheba replied, “That’s fine,t I’ll speak to the king on your behalf.”
19 So Bathsheba visited King Solomon to speak to him on Adonijah’s behalf. The king got up to greett her, bowed to her, and then sat on his throne. He ordered a throne to be brought for the king’s mother,t and she sat at his right hand.20 She said, “I would like to ask you for just one small favor.t Please don’t refuse me.”t He said,t “Go ahead and ask, my mother, for I would not refuse you.”21 She said, “Allow Abishag the Shunammite to be given to your brother Adonijah as a wife.”

22 King Solomon answered his mother, “Why just request Abishag the Shunammite for him?t Since he is my older brother, you should also request the kingdom for him, for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab son of Zeruiah!”
23 King Solomon then swore an oath by the Lord, “May God judge me severely,t if Adonijah does not pay for this request with his life!t24 Now, as certainly as the Lord lives (he who made me secure, allowed me to sit on my father David’s throne, and established a dynastyt for me as he promised), Adonijah will be executed today!”

25 King Solomon then sentt Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he killed Adonijah.t
26 The king then told Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your propertyt in Anathoth. You deserve to die,t but today I will not kill you because you did carry the ark of the sovereign Lord before my father David and you suffered with my father through all his difficult times.”t

27 Solomon dismissed Abiathar from his position as priest of the Lord,t fulfilling the decree of judgment the Lord made in Shiloh against the family of Eli.t
28 When the news reached Joab (for Joab had supportedt Adonijah, although he had not supported Absalom), het ran to the tent of the Lord and grabbed hold of the horns of the altar.s29 When King Solomon heardt that Joab had run to the tent of the Lord and was right there beside the altar, he ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada,t “Go, strike him down.”30 When Benaiah arrived at the tent of the Lord, he said to him, “The king says, ‘Come out!’” But he replied, “No, I will die here!” So Benaiah sent word to the king and reported Joab’s reply.t31 The king told him, “Do as he said! Strike him down and bury him. Take away from me and from my father’s familyt the guilt of Joab’s murderous, bloody deeds.t32 May the Lord punish him for the blood he shed;t behind my father David’s back he struck down and murdered with the sword two men who were more innocent and morally upright than het – Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.33 May Joab and his descendants be perpetually guilty of their shed blood, but may the Lord give perpetual peace to David, his descendants, his family,t and his dynasty.”t34 So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up and executed Joab;t he was buried at his home in the wilderness.

35 The king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada to take his place at the head oft the army, and the king appointed Zadok the priest to take Abiathar’s place.s
36 Next the king summonedt Shimei and told him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalems and live there – but you may not leave there to go anywhere!t37 If you ever do leave and cross the Kidron Valley, know for sure that you will certainly die! You will be responsible for your own death.”t

38 Shimei said to the king, “My master the king’s proposal is acceptable.t Your servant will do as you say.”t So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.t
39 Three years later two of Shimei’s servants ran away to King Achish son of Maacah of Gath. Shimei was told, “Look, your servants are in Gath.”40 So Shimei got up, saddled his donkey, and went to Achish at Gath to find his servants; Shimei went and brought back his servants from Gath.41 When Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had then returned,42 the king summonedt Shimei and said to him, “You will recallt that I made you take an oath by the Lord, and I solemnly warned you, ‘If you ever leave and go anywhere,t know for sure that you will certainly die.’ You said to me, ‘The proposal is acceptable; I agree to it.’t43 Why then have you broken the oath you made before the Lord and disobeyed the order I gave you?”t44 Then the king said to Shimei, “You are well aware of the way you mistreated my father David.t The Lord will punish you for what you did.t45 But King Solomon will be empoweredt and David’s dynastyt will endure permanently before the Lord.”

46 The king then gave the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada who went and executed Shimei.t
So Solomon took firm control of the kingdom.t
