Piedras vivas del templo de Dios
1 Renuncien, pues, a toda malicia, a todo engaño, hipocresía, envidia o maledicencia.t 2 Como niños recién nacidos, nútranse de la leche pura del Espíritu para que con ella crezcan y reciban la salvación,t
3 ya quet han gustado la bondad del Señor.t
4 Al integrarse en él, piedra viva rechazada por los humanos, pero escogida y preciosa para Dios,t 5 también ustedes, como piedras vivas, se van construyendo como templo espiritual para formar un sacerdocio consagradot que, por medio de Jesucristo, ofrezca sacrificios espirituales y agradables a Dios.t
6 Pues dice la Escritura:
Miren, yo coloco en Sión
una piedra angular, escogida y preciosa;
quien ponga su confianza en ella,
no se verá defraudado .t
7 Piedra de gran valor para ustedes los creyentes. En cambio, para los incrédulos:
La piedra que desecharon los constructores,
se ha convertido en la piedra principal, t
8 en piedra de tropiezo, en roca donde uno se estrella.
Y, efectivamente, en ella tropiezan los que no aceptan el mensaje; tal es su destinot.t 9 Pero ustedes son raza elegida, sacerdocio real, nación consagradat, pueblo de su posesión, destinado a proclamar las grandezas de quien los llamó de las tinieblas a su luz maravillosa.t
10 Ustedes que antes eran “no pueblo”, son ahora pueblo de Dios; ustedes que no eran amados, son ahora objeto de su amor.tModelos de conducta
11 Queridos hermanos, ustedes son gente de paso en tierra extraña. Por eso les exhorto a que luchen contra los apetitos desordenados* que hacen guerra al espíritut.t 12 Pórtense ejemplarmente entre los paganos, para que sus buenas acciones desmientan las calumnias de quienes los consideran malhechores, y puedan también ellos glorificar a Dios el día en que venga a visitarlost.t 13 En atención al Señor, presten acatamiento a toda autoridad humana, ya sea al jefe del Estadot en su calidad de soberano,t 14 ya a los gobernantes puestos por Dios para castigar a los malhechores y premiar a quienes observan una conducta ejemplar. 15 Porque la voluntad de Dios es que, haciendo el bien, cierren ustedes la boca de los ignorantes e insensatos. 16 Son libres, pero utilicen la libertad para servir a Dios y no como patente de libertinaje.t 17 Traten a todos con deferencia, amen a los hermanos, teman a Dios, respeten al jefe del Estado.t
18 Que los empleados acaten con todo respeto las órdenes de sus jefes, no sólo de los buenos y amables, sino también de los impertinentes.tIII.— TRAS LAS HUELLAS DE CRISTO RESUCITADO (2,19—4,19)
Imitar a Jesucristo
19 Es una bella cosa aguantar vejaciones injustas conscientes de que Dios así lo quiere. 20 Si los golpearan por ser culpables, ¿qué mérito tendría su aguante? Pero que sufran y aguanten aun habiendo hecho el bien, es cosa que agrada a Dios.t 21 Precisamente a eso han sido llamados: a seguir las huellas de Cristo, que padeciendo por ustedes, les dejó un modelo que imitar:t 22 Cristo, que ni cometió pecado ni se encontró mentira en sus labios.t 23 Cuando lo injuriaban, no respondía con injurias, sino que sufría sin amenazar y se ponía en manos de Dios, que juzga con justicia.t 24 Cargando sobre sí nuestros pecados, los llevó hasta el madero* para que nosotros muramos al pecado y vivamos con toda rectitudt. Han sido, pues, sanados a costa de sus heridas;t 25 Antes, en efecto, ustedes andaban como ovejas descarriadas, pero ahora han vuelto al que es pastor y guardián* de sus vidast.t

1 So get rid oft all evil and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.2 Andt yearnt like newborn infants for pure, spiritual milk,t so that by it you may grow up tot salvation,s
3 if you have experiencedtthe Lord’s kindness.s
A Living Stone, a Chosen People
4 So as you come to him,t a living stone rejected by men butt chosen and pricelesst in God’s sight,5 you yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offert spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.6 For it sayst in scripture, “Look, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen and priceless cornerstone,tand whoever believestin himtwill nevertbe put to shame.”s7 So you who believe seet his value,t but for those who do not believe, the stone that the builders rejected has become thetcornerstone,s8 and a stumbling-stonetand a rock to trip over.s They stumblet because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.t9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may proclaim the virtuess of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10 Yout once were not a people, but now you are God’s people. You were shown no mercy,s but now you have received mercy.
11 Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to keep away from fleshly desires that do battle against the soul,
12 and maintain good conductt among the non-Christians,t so that thought they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears.t
Submission to Authorities
13 Be subject to every human institutiont for the Lord’s sake, whether to a king as supreme14 or to governors as those he commissionst to punish wrongdoers and praiset those who do good.15 For God wants yout to silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good.16 Livet as free people, not using your freedom as a pretext for evil, but as God’s slaves.ts
17 Honor all people, love the family of believers,t fear God, honor the king.
18 Slaves,t be subjectt to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are perverse.19 For this finds God’s favor,t if because of conscience toward Godst someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly.20 For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? But if you do good and suffer and so endure, this finds favor with God.t21 For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps.22 Hetcommitted no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth.s23 When he was maligned, het did not answer back; when he suffered, he threatenedt no retaliation,s but committed himself to Godt who judges justly.24 Hethimself bore our sinss in his body on the tree, that we may cease from sinningt and live for righteousness. By histwoundstyou were healed.s
25 For you were going astray like sheeps but now you have turned back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
