1 Pedro 2

1  Por lo tanto, desháganse de toda mala conducta. Acaben con todo engaño, hipocresía, celos y toda clase de comentarios hirientes. 2 Como bebés recién nacidos, deseen con ganas la leche espiritual pura para que crezcan a una experiencia plena de la salvación. Pidan a gritos ese alimento nutritivo 3 ahora que han probado la bondad del Señor.

Piedras vivas para la casa de Dios

4 Ahora ustedes se acercan a Cristo, quien es la piedra viva principal del templo de Dios. La gente lo rechazó, pero Dios lo eligió para darle gran honra.

5 Y ustedes son las piedras vivas con las cuales Dios edifica su templo espiritual. Además, son sacerdotes santos.t Por la mediación de Jesucristo, ustedes ofrecen sacrificios espirituales que agradan a Dios.

6 Como dicen las Escrituras:
«Pongo en Jerusalént una piedra principal,
elegida para gran honra,
y todo el que confíe en él
jamás será deshonrado»t.

7 Así es, ustedes, los que confían en él, reconocen la honra que Dios le ha dado; pero para aquellos que lo rechazan,
«La piedra que los constructores rechazaron
ahora se ha convertido en la piedra principal»t.

8 Además,
«Él es la piedra que hace tropezar a muchos,
es la roca que los hace caer»t.
Tropiezan porque no obedecen la palabra de Dios y por eso se enfrentan con el destino que les fue preparado.

9 Pero ustedes no son así porque son un pueblo elegido. Son sacerdotes del Rey,t una nación santa, posesión exclusiva de Dios. Por eso pueden mostrar a otros la bondad de Dios, pues él los ha llamado a salir de la oscuridad y entrar en su luz maravillosa.

10 «Antes no tenían identidad como pueblo,
ahora son pueblo de Dios.
Antes no recibieron misericordia,
ahora han recibido la misericordia de Dios»t.

11 Queridos amigos, ya que son «extranjeros y residentes temporales», les advierto que se alejen de los deseos mundanos, que luchan contra el alma. 12 Procuren llevar una vida ejemplar entre sus vecinos no creyentes. Así, por más que ellos los acusen de actuar mal, verán que ustedes tienen una conducta honorable y le darán honra a Dios cuando él juzgue al mundo.t

Respeto por las autoridades

13 Por amor al Señor, respeten a toda autoridad humana, ya sea el rey como jefe de Estado 14 o a los funcionarios que él ha nombrado. Pues a ellos el rey los ha mandando a que castiguen a aquellos que hacen el mal y a que honren a los que hacen el bien.

15 La voluntad de Dios es que la vida honorable de ustedes calle a la gente ignorante que los acusa sin fundamento alguno. 16 Pues ustedes son libres, pero a la vez, son esclavos de Dios, así que no usen su libertad como una excusa para hacer el mal. 17 Respeten a todos y amen a sus hermanos en Cristo.t Teman a Dios y respeten al rey.

A los esclavos

18 Ustedes, los que son esclavos, deben aceptar la autoridad de sus amos con todo respeto.t Hagan lo que ellos les ordenan, no sólo si son bondadosos y razonables, sino también si son crueles. 19 Pues Dios se complace en ustedes cuando hacen lo que saben que es correcto y sufren con paciencia cuando reciben un trato injusto. 20 Es obvio que no hay mérito en ser paciente si a uno lo golpean por haber actuado mal, pero si sufren por hacer el bien y lo soportan con paciencia, Dios se agrada de ustedes.

21 Pues Dios los llamó a hacer lo bueno, aunque eso signifique que tengan que sufrir, tal como Cristo sufriót por ustedes. Él es su ejemplo, y deben seguir sus pasos.

22 Él nunca pecó
y jamás engañó a nadie.t

23 No respondía cuando lo insultaban
ni amenazaba con vengarse cuando sufría.
Dejaba su causa en manos de Dios,
quien siempre juzga con justicia.

24 Él mismo cargó nuestros pecados
sobre su cuerpo en la cruz,
para que nosotros podamos estar muertos al pecado
y vivir para lo que es recto.
Por sus heridas,
son sanados.

25 Antes eran como ovejas
que andaban descarriadas.
Pero ahora han vuelto a su Pastor,
al Guardián de sus almas.

A Living Stone and //a Holy Nation

1 Stop being hateful! Quit trying to fool people, and start being sincere. Don't be jealous or say cruel things about others. 2 Be like newborn babies who are thirsty for the pure spiritual milk that will help you grow and be saved.

3 t You have already found out how good the Lord really is.
4 Come to Jesus Christ. He is the living stone people have rejected, but which God has chosen and highly honored. 5 And now you are living stones being used to build a spiritual house. You are also a group of holy priests, and with the help of Jesus Christ you will offer sacrifices that please God.

6 t It is just as God says in the Scriptures,
“Look! I am placing in Zion
a choice and precious
cornerstone.
No one who has faith
in this one
will be disappointed.”
7  t You are followers of the Lord, and this stone is precious to you. But it isn't precious to those who refuse to follow him. They are the builders who tossed aside the stone that turned out to be the most important one of all.

8 t They disobeyed the message and stumbled and fell over this stone, because they were doomed.

9  t But you are God's chosen and special people. You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Now you must tell all the wonderful things he has done. The Scriptures say,

10  t “Once you were nobody.
Now you are God's people.
At one time no one
had mercy on you.
Now God has treated you
with kindness.”

Live as God's Servants Should

12 Always let others see you behaving properly, even though they may still accuse you of doing wrong. Then on the day of judgment, they will honor God by telling the good things they saw you do.
13 The Lord wants you to obey all human authorities, especially the Emperor, who rules over everyone. 14 You must also obey governors, because they are sent by the Emperor to punish criminals and to praise good citizens. 15 God wants you to silence stupid and ignorant people by doing right. 16 You are free, but still you are God's servants, and you must not use your freedom as an excuse for doing wrong.

17 Respect everyone and show special love for God's people. Honor God and respect the Emperor.

The Example of //Christ's Suffering

21 After all, God chose you to suffer as you follow in the footsteps of Christ, who set an example by suffering for you.

22  t Christ did not sin
or ever tell a lie.

23  t Although he was abused,
he never tried to get even.
And when he suffered,
he made no threats.
Instead, he had faith in God,
who judges fairly.

24  t Christ carried the burden
of our sins.
He was nailed to the cross,
so we would stop sinning
and start living right.
By his cuts and bruises
you are healed.

25 You had wandered away
like sheep.
Now you have returned
to the one
who is your shepherd
and protector.
