EPISTOLA I DI S. PIETRO 2

1 Gettando dunque lungi da voi ogni malizia, e ogni frode, e le ipocrisie, e le invidie, ed ogni sorta di maldicenze, come bambini pur ora nati, 2 appetite il puro latte spirituale, onde per esso cresciate per la salvezza, 3 se pure avete gustato che il Signore è buono. 4 Accostandovi a lui, pietra vivente, riprovata bensì dagli uomini ma innanzi a Dio eletta e preziosa, anche voi, 5 come pietre viventi, siete edificati qual casa spirituale, per esser un sacerdozio santo per offrire sacrifici spirituali, accettevoli a Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo. 6 Poiché si legge nella Scrittura: Ecco, io pongo in Sion una pietra angolare, eletta, preziosa; e chiunque crede in lui non sarà confuso. 7 Per voi dunque che credete ell'è preziosa; ma per gl'increduli la pietra che gli edificatori hanno riprovata è quella ch'è divenuta la pietra angolare, e una pietra d'inciampo e un sasso d'intoppo: 8 essi, infatti, essendo disubbidienti, intoppano nella Parola; ed a questo sono stati anche destinati. 9 Ma voi siete una generazione eletta, un real sacerdozio, una gente santa, un popolo che Dio s'è acquistato, affinché proclamiate le virtù di Colui che vi ha chiamati dalle tenebre alla sua maravigliosa luce; 10 voi, che già non eravate un popolo, ma ora siete il popolo di Dio; voi, che non avevate ottenuto misericordia, ma ora avete ottenuto misericordia. 11 Diletti, io v'esorto come stranieri e pellegrini ad astenervi dalle carnali concupiscenze, che guerreggiano contro l'anima, 12 avendo una buona condotta fra i Gentili; affinché laddove sparlano di voi come di malfattori, essi, per le vostre buone opere che avranno osservate, glorifichino Iddio nel giorno ch'Egli li visiterà. 13 Siate soggetti, per amor del Signore, ad ogni autorità creata dagli uomini: al re, come al sovrano; 14 ai governatori, come mandati da lui per punire i malfattori e per dar lode a quelli che fanno il bene. 15 Poiché questa è la volontà di Dio: che, facendo il bene, turiate la bocca alla ignoranza degli uomini stolti; 16 come liberi, ma non usando già della libertà quel manto che copra la malizia, ma come servi di Dio. 17 Onorate tutti. Amate la fratellanza. Temete Iddio. Rendete onore al re. 18 Domestici, siate con ogni timore soggetti ai vostri padroni; non solo ai buoni e moderati, ma anche a quelli che son difficili. 19 Poiché questo è accettevole: se alcuno, per motivo di coscienza davanti a Dio, sopporta afflizioni, patendo ingiustamente. 20 Infatti, che vanto c'è se, peccando ed essendo malmenati, voi sopportate pazientemente? Ma se facendo il bene, eppur patendo, voi sopportate pazientemente, questa è cosa grata a Dio. 21 Perché a questo siete stati chiamati: poiché anche Cristo ha patito per voi, lasciandovi un esempio, onde seguiate le sue orme; 22 egli, che non commise peccato, e nella cui bocca non fu trovata alcuna frode; 23 che, oltraggiato, non rendeva gli oltraggi; che, soffrendo, non minacciava, ma si rimetteva nelle mani di Colui che giudica giustamente; 24 egli, che ha portato egli stesso i nostri peccati nel suo corpo, sul legno, affinché, morti al peccato, vivessimo per la giustizia, e mediante le cui lividure siete stati sanati. 25 Poiché eravate erranti come pecore; ma ora siete tornati al Pastore e Vescovo delle anime vostre.

A Living Stone and //a Holy Nation

1 Stop being hateful! Quit trying to fool people, and start being sincere. Don't be jealous or say cruel things about others. 2 Be like newborn babies who are thirsty for the pure spiritual milk that will help you grow and be saved.

3 t You have already found out how good the Lord really is.
4 Come to Jesus Christ. He is the living stone people have rejected, but which God has chosen and highly honored. 5 And now you are living stones being used to build a spiritual house. You are also a group of holy priests, and with the help of Jesus Christ you will offer sacrifices that please God.

6 t It is just as God says in the Scriptures,
“Look! I am placing in Zion
a choice and precious
cornerstone.
No one who has faith
in this one
will be disappointed.”
7  t You are followers of the Lord, and this stone is precious to you. But it isn't precious to those who refuse to follow him. They are the builders who tossed aside the stone that turned out to be the most important one of all.

8 t They disobeyed the message and stumbled and fell over this stone, because they were doomed.

9  t But you are God's chosen and special people. You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Now you must tell all the wonderful things he has done. The Scriptures say,

10  t “Once you were nobody.
Now you are God's people.
At one time no one
had mercy on you.
Now God has treated you
with kindness.”

Live as God's Servants Should

12 Always let others see you behaving properly, even though they may still accuse you of doing wrong. Then on the day of judgment, they will honor God by telling the good things they saw you do.
13 The Lord wants you to obey all human authorities, especially the Emperor, who rules over everyone. 14 You must also obey governors, because they are sent by the Emperor to punish criminals and to praise good citizens. 15 God wants you to silence stupid and ignorant people by doing right. 16 You are free, but still you are God's servants, and you must not use your freedom as an excuse for doing wrong.

17 Respect everyone and show special love for God's people. Honor God and respect the Emperor.

The Example of //Christ's Suffering

21 After all, God chose you to suffer as you follow in the footsteps of Christ, who set an example by suffering for you.

22  t Christ did not sin
or ever tell a lie.

23  t Although he was abused,
he never tried to get even.
And when he suffered,
he made no threats.
Instead, he had faith in God,
who judges fairly.

24  t Christ carried the burden
of our sins.
He was nailed to the cross,
so we would stop sinning
and start living right.
By his cuts and bruises
you are healed.

25 You had wandered away
like sheep.
Now you have returned
to the one
who is your shepherd
and protector.
