A las esposas

1  De la misma manera, ustedes esposas, tienen que aceptar la autoridad de sus esposos. Entonces, aun cuando alguno de ellos se niegue a obedecer la Buena Noticia, la vida recta de ustedes les hablará sin palabras. Ellos serán ganados 2 al observar la vida pura y la conducta respetuosa de ustedes.

3 No se interesen tanto por la belleza externa: los peinados extravagantes, las joyas costosas o la ropa elegante. 4 En cambio, vístanse con la belleza interior, la que no se desvanece, la belleza de un espíritu tierno y sereno, que es tan precioso a los ojos de Dios. 5 Así es como lucían hermosas las santas mujeres de la antigüedad. Ellas confiaban en Dios y aceptaban la autoridad de sus maridos. 6 Por ejemplo, Sara obedecía a su esposo, Abraham, y lo llamaba «señor». Ustedes son sus hijas cuando hacen lo correcto sin temor a lo que sus esposos pudieran hacer.

A los esposos

7 De la misma manera, ustedes maridos, tienen que honrar a sus esposas. Cada uno viva con su esposa y trátela con entendimiento. Ella podrá ser más débil, pero participa por igual del regalo de la nueva vida que Dios les ha dado. Trátala como es debido, para que nada estorbe tus oraciones.

A todos los cristianos

8 Por último, todos deben ser de un mismo parecer. Compadézcanse unos de otros. Ámense como hermanos y hermanas.t Sean de buen corazón y mantengan una actitud humilde. 9 No paguen mal por mal. No respondan con insultos cuando la gente los insulte. Por el contrario, contesten con una bendición. A esto los ha llamado Dios, y él los bendecirá por hacerlo.

10 Pues las Escrituras dicen:
«Si quieres disfrutar de la vida
y ver muchos días felices,
refrena tu lengua de hablar el mal
y tus labios de decir mentiras.

11 Apártate del mal y haz el bien.
Busca la paz y esfuérzate por mantenerla.

12 Los ojos del Señor están sobre los que hacen lo bueno,
y sus oídos están abiertos a sus oraciones.
Pero el Señor aparta su rostro
de los que hacen lo malo»t.

Sufrir por hacer el bien

13 Ahora bien, ¿quién querrá hacerles daño si ustedes están deseosos de hacer el bien? 14 Pero, aun si sufren por hacer lo correcto, Dios va a recompensarlos. Así que no se preocupen ni tengan miedo a las amenazas. 15 En cambio, adoren a Cristo como el Señor de su vida. Si alguien les pregunta acerca de la esperanza cristiana que tienen, estén siempre preparados para dar una explicación; 16 pero háganlo con humildad y respeto.t Mantengan siempre limpia la conciencia. Entonces, si la gente habla en contra de ustedes será avergonzada al ver la vida recta que llevan porque pertenecen a Cristo. 17 Recuerden que es mejor sufrir por hacer el bien —si eso es lo que Dios quiere— ¡que sufrir por hacer el mal!

18 Cristo sufriót por nuestros pecados una sola vez y para siempre. Él nunca pecó, en cambio, murió por los pecadores para llevarlos a salvo con Dios. Sufrió la muerte física, pero volvió a la vida en el Espíritu.t

19 Por lo tanto, fue a predicarles a los espíritus encarcelados, 20 esos que desobedecieron a Dios hace mucho tiempo, cuando Dios esperaba con paciencia mientras Noé construía el arca. Sólo ocho personas se salvaron de morir ahogadas en ese terrible diluvio.t 21 El agua del diluvio simboliza el bautismo que ahora los salva a ustedes —no por quitarles la suciedad del cuerpo, sino porque responden a Dios con unat conciencia limpia— y es eficaz por la resurrección de Jesucristo.

22 Ahora Cristo ha ido al cielo. Él está sentado en el lugar de honor, al lado de Dios, y todos los ángeles, las autoridades y los poderes aceptan su autoridad.

Wives and Husbands

1  t If you are a wife, you must put your husband first. Even if he opposes our message, you will win him over by what you do. No one else will have to say anything to him, 2 because he will see how you honor God and live a pure life. 3 t Don't depend on things like fancy hairdos or gold jewelry or expensive clothes to make you look beautiful.

4 Be beautiful in your heart by being gentle and quiet. This kind of beauty will last, and God considers it very special.
5 Long ago those women who worshiped God and put their hope in him made themselves beautiful by putting their husbands first.

6 For example, Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her true children, if you do right and don't let anything frighten you.

7  t If you are a husband, you should be thoughtful of your wife. Treat her with honor, because she isn't as strong as you are, and she shares with you in the gift of life. Then nothing will stand in the way of your prayers.

Suffering for Doing Right

9 Don't be hateful and insult people just because they are hateful and insult you. Instead, treat everyone with kindness. You are God's chosen ones, and he will bless you. The Scriptures say,

10  t “Do you really love life?
Do you want to be happy?
Then stop saying cruel things
and quit telling lies.

11 Give up your evil ways
and do right,
as you find and follow
the road to peace.

12 The Lord watches over
everyone who obeys him,
and he listens
to their prayers.
But he opposes everyone
who does evil.”
13 Can anyone really harm you for being eager to do good deeds? 14 t t Even if you have to suffer for doing good things, God will bless you. So stop being afraid and don't worry about what people might do.

15 Honor Christ and let him be the Lord of your life.
Always be ready to give an answer when someone asks you about your hope. 16 Give a kind and respectful answer and keep your conscience clear. This way you will make people ashamed for saying bad things about your good conduct as a follower of Christ.

17 You are better off to obey God and suffer for doing right than to suffer for doing wrong.

18 Christ died once for our sins.
An innocent person died
for those who are guilty.
Christ did this
to bring you to God,
when his body
was put to death
and his spirit
was made alive.
19 Christ then preached to the spirits that were being kept in prison.

20 t t They had disobeyed God while Noah was building the boat, but God had been patient with them. Eight people went into that boat and were brought safely through the flood.
21 Those flood waters were like baptism that now saves you. But baptism is more than just washing your body. It means turning to God with a clear conscience, because Jesus Christ was raised from death. 22 Christ is now in heaven, where he sits at the right sidet of God. All angels, authorities, and powers are under his control.
