Deberes de los casados

1 De la misma manera, esposas, obedezcan a sus esposos. Si algún esposo no le cree a la palabra de Dios, podrá ser convencido sin que se le tenga que decir una sola palabra, sino a través de la conducta de ustedes2 al ver la forma de ser santat y respetuosa de su esposa.3 Que su belleza no venga de los adornos externos, como peinados exagerados, joyas de oro o ropa fina.4 Su belleza debe venir del corazón, del interior de su ser, porque la belleza que no se echa a perder es la de un espíritu suave y tranquilo, valioso ante los ojos de Dios.5 Así se adornaban las mujeres santas que vivieron hace mucho tiempo. Tenían puesta su esperanza en Dios y obedecían a sus esposos.

6 Me refiero a mujeres como Sara, quien obedeció a Abrahamt, su esposo, y lo llamaba su señor. Ustedes son verdaderas hijas de Sara si hacen el bien y no le dan lugar al miedo.

7 De la misma manera, los esposos deben saber vivir con su esposa y respetarla como es debido. Ella es más débil que ustedes, pero al igual que a ustedes, Dios le ha dado la vida como un regalo. Respétenla para que nada impida que Dios escuche sus oraciones.

Sufrir por hacer el bien

8 Finalmente, vivan todos ustedes en paz y unidad. Traten de entenderse los unos a los otros. Ámense como hermanos, sean compasivos y humildes.9 No devuelvan mal por mal. En lugar de insultar a los que los insultan, pidan que Dios los bendiga a ellos, porque ustedes mismos fueron llamados a recibir una bendición,10 pues:
«Quien quiera amar la vida
y disfrutar días buenos,
no permita que su lengua haga daño,
ni que su boca diga mentiras.
11 Deje de hacer el mal
y empiece a hacer el bien.
Busque la paz y promuévala.

12 El Señor ve a los que obran rectamente,
y escucha sus oraciones;
pero está en contra
de los que hacen el mal».t
13 Así que, ¿quién intentará hacerles daño, si ustedes siempre están tratando de hacer el bien?14 Sin embargo, si de hecho sufren por hacer lo que es justo, entonces son afortunadost. «No se preocupen ni les tengan miedo a quienes los hacen sufrir».t15 Más bien, preocúpense sólo por honrar a Cristo como Señor y estén siempre listos a responder a todo el que les pida razón de su esperanza.

16 Pero cuando respondan, háganlo con humildad y respeto, manteniendo una conciencia limpia. Así, los que hablan mal de su buena conducta en Cristo sentirán vergüenza por haberlos criticado.
17 Es mejor sufrir por hacer el bien, si es la voluntad de Dios, que sufrir por hacer el mal.

18 Porque
Cristo mismo sufrió la muerte
por nuestros pecados,
una vez y para siempre.
Cristo no era culpable
y aun así murió por los que sí lo eran,
para poder llevarlos a ustedes ante Dios.
Sufrió la muerte en su cuerpo,
pero volvió a la vida
por medio del Espíritu.t
19 Por el Espíritu, Jesucristo fue a proclamar su victoria a los espíritus que estaban presos20 porque se negaron a obedecer a Dios en el tiempo de Noé. Dios esperaba pacientemente por ellos mientras Noé construía el arcat en la que solamente ocho personas fueron salvadas mediante el agua.21 Esa agua es como el bautismot que ahora los salva a ustedes. Pero el bautismo no consiste en limpiar el cuerpo, sino en el compromiso para con Dios de tener una conciencia limpia.t El bautismo los salva porque Jesucristo fue resucitado de entre los muertos,

22 se ha ido al cielo y está sentado a la derecha de Dios. Jesucristo reina sobre ángeles, autoridades y poderes.

Godly Living

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives,2 as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.3 Your adornment must not be merely external-braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.

7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

8 To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit;9 not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.10 For,
"THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS,
MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.

11 "HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD;
HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.

12 "FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS,
AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER,
BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL."

13 Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,15 but tsanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
