Como os casados devem viver

1 Assim também vocês, esposas, submetam-se aos seus maridos, para que, se alguns deles ainda não obedecem à mensagem de Deus, sejam ganhos por meio do modo de vida de suas esposas, sem a necessidade de qualquer palavra.2 Eles serão ganhos ao observarem o comportamento puro e respeitoso de vocês.3 Não são as coisas exteriores como penteados exagerados, braceletes de ouro ou roupas finas que devem ser usadas por vocês para que se tornem bonitas.4 Pelo contrário, a beleza de vocês deve vir de dentro e deve consistir de um espírito manso e tranqüilo. Esta beleza nunca se perde e tem grande valor diante de Deus.5 Pois era assim também que aquelas santas mulheres do passado, que esperavam em Deus, se tornavam bonitas. Elas se submetiam aos seus maridos

6 assim como Sara, que obedeceu a Abraão e o chamou de senhor. Vocês se tornarão filhas dela se fizerem o bem e não tiverem medo de nada.

7 Assim também vocês, maridos, vivam a vida comum do lar com compreensão. Honrem as suas esposas por serem a parte mais frágil e também por serem herdeiras juntamente com vocês do mesmo dom de vida. Façam isso para que nada atrapalhe as orações de vocês.

Sofrer por fazer o bem

8 Finalmente, todos vocês devem viver em harmonia, devem ser compadecidos, misericordiosos e humildes, e devem amar uns aos outros como irmãos.9 Se alguém lhes fizer algum mal ou os insultar, não paguem de volta fazendo o mal ou com insultos. Pelo contrário, paguem pedindo as bênçãos de Deus sobre essa pessoa, pois foi para serem abençoados que vocês foram chamados.10 Pois as Escriturast dizem:
"Quem quiser aproveitar bem a vida e ter dias felizes
deve parar de falar maldades e de contar mentiras;
11 deve afastar-se do mal e fazer o bem;
deve buscar a paz e esforçar-se por alcançá-la.

12 Porque o Senhor olha para os justos
e ouve as suas orações.
Mas o Senhor está contra aqueles que fazem o mal".t

13 Ora, quem é que vai maltratar a vocês, se estiverem ansiosos por fazerem o bem?14 Mas, mesmo que vocês sofram por fazerem o bem, vocês são abençoados por isso. Portanto, "não tenham medo de ninguém e nem se deixem intimidar"t.15 Antes, honrem a Cristo como Senhor nos seus corações e estejam sempre preparados para responder a todo aquele que lhes pedir para explicar a respeito da esperança que vocês têm.16 Mas façam isso com mansidão e respeito e mantenham a consciência de vocês limpa. Dessa forma, quando forem insultados, aqueles que estiverem falando mal da vida de vocês como seguidores de Cristo ficarão envergonhados.17 Porque se for da vontade de Deus que vocês sofram, é melhor que sofram por fazerem o bem do que por fazerem o mal.18 O próprio Cristo morreu pelos nossos pecados de uma vez por todas. O inocente morreu pelos culpados, para que pudesse levar vocês a Deus. Ele morreu com relação ao corpo, mas com relação ao espírito, tornou a viver.19 E foi nessa condição espiritual que Ele foi e fez uma proclamação aos espíritos que estavam presos.20 Esses espíritos tinham sido desobedientes no passado, enquanto Deus esperava pacientemente nos dias de Noé, na época em que a arca estava sendo construída. E foram poucas, isto é, somente oito, as pessoas salvas pela água.21 Aquela água é como a água do batismot que agora os salva. No batismo nós não tiramos a sujeira do corpo, mas pedimos a Deus por uma consciência limpa. E tudo isso é realizado mediante a ressurreição de Jesus Cristo,

22 o qual foi para o céu e está à direita de Deus. E todos os anjos, assim como as autoridades e poderes, estão sujeitos a Ele.

Godly Living

1 In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives,2 as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.3 Your adornment must not be merely external-braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;4 but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.5 For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;6 just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.

7 You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

8 To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit;9 not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.10 For,
"THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS,
MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.

11 "HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD;
HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.

12 "FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS,
AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER,
BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL."

13 Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,15 but tsanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;16 and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.17 For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.21 Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
