Samuel unge a David

1 El Señor le dijo a Samuel:
—¿Cuánto tiempo vas a quedarte llorando por Saúl, si ya lo he rechazado como rey de Israel? Mejor llena de aceite tu cuerno, y ponte en camino. Voy a enviarte a Belén, a la casa de Isaí, pues he escogido como rey a uno de sus hijos. 2 —¿Y cómo voy a ir? —respondió Samuel—. Si Saúl llega a enterarse, me matará.
—Lleva una ternera —dijo el Señor—, y diles que vas a ofrecerle al Señor un sacrificio. 3 Invita a Isaí al sacrificio, y entonces te explicaré lo que debes hacer, pues ungirás para mi servicio a quien yo te diga.
4 Samuel hizo lo que le mandó el Señor. Pero cuando llegó a Belén, los *ancianos del pueblo lo recibieron con mucho temor.
—¿Vienes en son de paz? —le preguntaron. 5 —Claro que sí. He venido a ofrecerle al Señor un sacrificio. Purifíquense y vengan conmigo para tomar parte en él.
Entonces Samuel *purificó a Isaí y a sus hijos, y los invitó al sacrificio. 6 Cuando llegaron, Samuel se fijó en Eliab y pensó: «Sin duda que éste es el *ungido del Señor.» 7 Pero el Señor le dijo a Samuel:
—No te dejes impresionar por su apariencia ni por su estatura, pues yo lo he rechazado. La gente se fija en las apariencias, pero yo me fijo en el *corazón. 8 Entonces Isaí llamó a Abinadab para presentárselo a Samuel, pero Samuel dijo:
—A éste no lo ha escogido el Señor.
9 Luego le presentó a Sama, y Samuel repitió:
—Tampoco a éste lo ha escogido. 10 Isaí le presentó a siete de sus hijos, pero Samuel le dijo:
—El Señor no ha escogido a ninguno de ellos. 11 ¿Son éstos todos tus hijos?
—Queda el más pequeño —respondió Isaí—, pero está cuidando el rebaño. —Manda a buscarlo —insistió Samuel—, que no podemos continuar hasta que él llegue. 12 Isaí mandó a buscarlo, y se lo trajeron. Era buen mozo, trigueño y de buena presencia. El Señor le dijo a Samuel:
—Éste es; levántate y úngelo. 13 Samuel tomó el cuerno de aceite y ungió al joven en presencia de sus hermanos. Entonces el Espíritu del Señor vino con poder sobre David, y desde ese día estuvo con él. Luego Samuel regresó a Ramá.

David al servicio de Saúl

14 El Espíritu del Señor se apartó de Saúl, y en su lugar el Señor le envió un espíritu maligno para que lo atormentara. 15 Sus servidores le dijeron:
—Como usted se dará cuenta, un espíritu maligno de parte de Dios lo está atormentando. 16 Así que ordene Su Majestad a estos siervos suyos que busquen a alguien que sepa tocar el arpa. Así, cuando lo ataque el espíritu maligno de parte de Dios, el músico tocará, y Su Majestad se sentirá mejor.
17 —Bien —les respondió Saúl—, consíganme un buen músico y tráiganlo.
18 Uno de los cortesanos sugirió:
—Conozco a un muchacho que sabe tocar el arpa. Es valiente, hábil guerrero, sabe expresarse y es de buena presencia. Además, el Señor está con él. Su padre es Isaí, el de Belén.
19 Entonces Saúl envió unos mensajeros a Isaí para decirle: «Mándame a tu hijo David, el que cuida del rebaño.» 20 Isaí tomó un asno, alimento, un odre de vino y un cabrito, y se los envió a Saúl por medio de su hijo David. 21 Cuando David llegó, quedó al servicio de Saúl, quien lo llegó a apreciar mucho y lo hizo su escudero. 22 Luego Saúl le mandó este mensaje a Isaí: «Permite que David se quede a mi servicio, pues me ha causado muy buena impresión.»
23 Cada vez que el espíritu de parte de Dios atormentaba a Saúl, David tomaba su arpa y tocaba. La música calmaba a Saúl y lo hacía sentirse mejor, y el espíritu maligno se apartaba de él.

1 SAMUEL 16

1  t One day he said, “Samuel, I've rejected Saul, and I refuse to let him be king any longer. Stop feeling sad about him. Put some olive oilt in a small containert and go visit a man named Jesse, who lives in Bethlehem. I've chosen one of his sons to be my king.”

2 Samuel answered, “If I do that, Saul will find out and have me killed.”
“Take a calf with you,” the [Lord] replied. “Tell everyone that you've come to offer it as a sacrifice to me,

3 then invite Jesse to the sacrifice.t When I show you which one of his sons I have chosen, pour the olive oil on his head.”

4 Samuel did what the [Lord] told him and went to Bethlehem. The town leaders went to meet him, but they were terribly afraid and asked, “Is this a friendly visit?”

5 “Yes, it is!” Samuel answered. “I've come to offer a sacrifice to the [Lord]. Get yourselves readyt to take part in the sacrifice and come with me.” Samuel also invited Jesse and his sons to come to the sacrifice, and he got them ready to take part.

6 When Jesse and his sons arrived, Samuel noticed Jesse's oldest son, Eliab. “He has to be the one the [Lord] has chosen,” Samuel said to himself.

7  t But the [Lord] told him, “Samuel, don't think Eliab is the one just because he's tall and handsome. He isn't the one I've chosen. People judge others by what they look like, but I judge people by what is in their hearts.”

8 Jesse told his son Abinadab to go over to Samuel, but Samuel said, “No, the [Lord] hasn't chosen him.”

9 Next, Jesse sent his son Shammah to him, and Samuel said, “The [Lord] hasn't chosen him either.”
10 One by one, Jesse told all seven of his sons to go over to Samuel. Finally, Samuel said, “Jesse, the [Lord] hasn't chosen any of these young men.

11 t Do you have any other sons?”
“Yes,” Jesse answered. “My youngest son David is out taking care of the sheep.”
“Send for him!” Samuel said. “We won't start the ceremony until he gets here.”

12 Jesse sent for David. He was a healthy, good-looking boy with a sparkle in his eyes. As soon as David came, the [Lord] told Samuel, “He's the one! Get up and pour the olive oil on his head.”t

13 Samuel poured the oil on David's head while his brothers watched. At that moment, the Spirit of the [Lord] took control of David and stayed with him from then on.
Samuel returned home to Ramah.

David Plays the Harp //for Saul

16 “Your Majesty, let us go and look for someone who is good at playing the harp. He can play for you whenever the evil spirit from God bothers you, and you'll feel better.”

17 “All right,” Saul answered. “Find me someone who is good at playing the harp and bring him here.”

18 “A man named Jesse who lives in Bethlehem has a son who can play the harp,” one official said. “He's a brave warrior, he's good-looking, he can speak well, and the [Lord] is with him.”

19 Saul sent a message to Jesse: “Tell your son David to leave your sheep and come here to me.”
20 Jesse loaded a donkey with bread and a goatskin full of wine, t then he told David to take the donkey and a young goat to Saul. 21 David went to Saul and started working for him. Saul liked him so much that he put David in charge of carrying his weapons.

22 Not long after this, Saul sent another message to Jesse: “I really like David. Please let him stay with me.”
23  t Whenever the evil spirit from God bothered Saul, David would play his harp. Saul would relax and feel better, and the evil spirit would go away.
