1 Samuel 2

1 Y ANNA oró y dijo: Mi corazón se regocija en Jehová, Mi cuerno es ensalzado en Jehová; Mi boca se ensanchó sobre mis enemigos, Por cuanto me alegré en tu salud.2 No hay santo como Jehová: Porque no hay ninguno fuera de ti; Y no hay refugio como el Dios nuestro.3 No multipliquéis hablando grandezas, altanerías; Cesen las palabras arrogantes de vuestra boca; Porque el Dios de todo saber es Jehová, Y á él toca el pesar las acciones.4 Los arcos de los fuertes fueron quebrados, Y los flacos se ciñeron de fortaleza.5 Los hartos se alquilaron por pan: Y cesaron los hambrientos: Hasta parir siete la estéril, Y la que tenía muchos hijos enfermó.6 Jehová mata, y él da vida: El hace descender al sepulcro, y hace subir.7 Jehová empobrece, y él enriquece: Abate, y ensalza.8 El levanta del polvo al pobre, Y al menesteroso ensalza del estiércol, Para asentarlo con los príncipes; Y hace que tengan por heredad asiento de honra: Porque de Jehová son las columnas de la tierra, Y él asentó sobre ellas el mundo.9 El guarda los pies de sus santos, Mas los impíos perecen en tinieblas; Porque nadie será fuerte por su fuerza.10 Delante de Jehová serán quebrantados sus adversarios, Y sobre ellos tronará desde los cielos: Jehová juzgará los términos de la tierra, Y dará fortaleza á su Rey, Y ensalzará el cuerno de su Mesías.

11 Y Elcana se volvió á su casa en Ramatha; y el niño ministraba á Jehová delante del sacerdote Eli.

12 Mas los hijos de Eli eran hombres impíos, y no tenían conocimiento de Jehová.

13 Y la costumbre de los sacerdotes con el pueblo era que, cuando alguno ofrecía sacrificio, venía el criado del sacerdote mientras la carne estaba á cocer, trayendo en su mano un garfio de tres ganchos;

14 Y hería con él en la caldera, ó en la olla, ó en el caldero, ó en el pote; y todo lo que sacaba el garfio, el sacerdote lo tomaba para si. De esta manera hacían á todo Israelita que venía á Silo.

15 Asimismo, antes de quemar el sebo, venía el criado del sacerdote, y decía al que sacrificaba: Da carne que ase para el sacerdote; porque no tomará de ti carne cocida, sino cruda.

16 Y si le respondía el varón, Quemen luego el sebo hoy, y después toma tanta como quisieres; él respondía: No, sino ahora la has de dar: de otra manera yo la tomaré por fuerza.

17 Era pues el pecado de los mozos muy grande delante de Jehová; porque los hombres menospreciaban los sacrificios de Jehová.

18 Y el joven Samuel ministraba delante de Jehová, vestido de un ephod de lino.

19 Y hacíale su madre una túnica pequeña, y traíasela cada año, cuando subía con su marido á ofrecer el sacrificio acostumbrado.

20 Y Eli bendijo á Elcana y á su mujer, diciendo: Jehová te dé simiente de esta mujer en lugar de esta petición que hizo á Jehová. Y volviéronse á su casa.

21 Y visitó Jehová á Anna, y concibió, y parió tres hijos, y dos hijas. Y el joven Samuel crecía delante de Jehová.

22 Eli empero era muy viejo, y oyó todo lo que sus hijos hacían á todo Israel, y como dormían con las mujeres que velaban á la puerta del tabernáculo del testimonio.

23 Y díjoles: ¿Por qué hacéis cosas semejantes? Porque yo oigo de todo este pueblo vuestros malos procederes.

24 No, hijos míos; porque no es buena fama la que yo oigo: que hacéis pecar al pueblo de Jehová.

25 Si pecare el hombre contra el hombre, los jueces le juzgarán; mas si alguno pecare contra Jehová, ¿quién rogará por él? Mas ellos no oyeron la voz de su padre, porque Jehová los quería matar.

26 Y el joven Samuel iba creciendo, y adelantando delante de Dios y delante de los hombres.

27 Y vino un varón de Dios á Eli, y díjole: Así ha dicho Jehová: ¿No me manifesté yo claramente á la casa de tu padre, cuando estaban en Egipto en casa de Faraón?

28 Y yo le escogí por mi sacerdote entre todas las tribus de Israel, para que ofreciese sobre mi altar, y quemase perfume, y trajese ephod delante de mí; y dí á la casa de tu padre todas las ofrendas de los hijos de Israel.

29 ¿Por qué habéis hollado mis sacrificios y mis presentes, que yo mandé ofrecer en el tabernáculo; y has honrado á tus hijos más que á mí, engordándoos de lo principal de todas las ofrendas de mi pueblo Israel?

30 Por tanto, Jehová el Dios de Israel dice: Yo había dicho que tu casa y la casa de tu padre andarían delante de mí perpetuamente; mas ahora ha dicho Jehová: Nunca yo tal haga, porque yo honraré á los que me honran, y los que me tuvieren en poco, serán viles.

31 He aquí vienen días, en que cortaré tu brazo, y el brazo de la casa de tu padre, que no haya viejo en tu casa.

32 Y verás competidor en el tabernáculo, en todas las cosas en que hiciere bien á Israel; y en ningún tiempo habrá viejo en tu casa.

33 Y no te cortaré del todo varón de mi altar, para hacerte marchitar tus ojos, y henchir tu ánimo de dolor; mas toda la cría de tu casa morirá en la edad varonil.

34 Y te será por señal esto que acontecerá á tus dos hijos, Ophni y Phinees: ambos morirán en un día.

35 Y yo me suscitaré un sacerdote fiel, que haga conforme á mi corazón y á mi alma; y yo le edificaré casa firme, y andará delante de mi ungido todo los días.

36 Y será que el que hubiere quedado en tu casa, vendrá á postrársele por un dinero de plata y un bocado de pan, diciéndole: Ruégote que me constituyas en algún ministerio, para que coma un bocado de pan.

1 SAMUEL 2

1  t Hannah prayed:
You make me strong
and happy, [Lord].
You rescued me.
Now I can be glad
and laugh at my enemies.

2 No other godt is like you.
And with you we are safer
than on a high mountain.t

3 I can tell those proud people,
“Stop your boasting!
Nothing is hidden from the [Lord],
and he judges what we do.”

4 Our [Lord], you break
the bows of warriors,
but you give strength
to everyone who stumbles.

5 People who once
had plenty to eat
must now hire themselves out
for only a piece of bread.
But you give the hungry more
than enough to eat.
A woman did not have a child,
and you gave her seven,
but a woman who had many
was left with none.

6  t You take away life,
and you give life.
You send people down
to the world of the dead
and bring them back again.

7 Our [Lord], you are the one
who makes us rich or poor.
You put some in high positions
and bring disgrace on others.

8 You lift the poor and homeless
out of the garbage dump
and give them places of honor
in royal palaces.
You set the world on foundations,
and they belong to you.

9 You protect your loyal people,
but everyone who is evil
will die in darkness.
We cannot win a victory
by our own strength.

10 Our [Lord], those who attack you
will be broken in pieces
when you fight back
with thunder from heaven.
You will judge the whole earth
and give power and strength
to your chosen king.

Samuel Stays with Eli

11 Elkanah and Hannah went back home to Ramah, but the boy Samuel stayed to help Eli serve the [Lord].

Eli's Sons

15 Sometimes, when people were offering sacrifices, the servant would come over, even before the fat had been cut off and sacrificed to the [Lord].t
Then the servant would tell them, “The priest doesn't want his meat boiled! Give him some raw meat that he can roast!”

16 Usually the people answered, “Take what you want. But first, let us sacrifice the fat to the [Lord].”
“No,” the servant would reply. “If you don't give it to me now, I'll take it by force.”

17 Eli's sons did not show any respect for the sacrifices that the people offered. This was a terrible sin, and it made the [Lord] very angry.

Hannah Visits Samuel

19 and the clothest his mother made for him. She brought new clothes every year, when she and her husband came to offer sacrifices at Shiloh.

20 Eli always blessed Elkanah and his wife and said, “Samuel was born in answer to your prayers. Now you have given him to the [Lord]. I pray that the [Lord] will bless you with more children to take his place.” After Eli had blessed them, Elkanah and Hannah would return home.

21 The [Lord] was kind to Hannah, and she had three more sons and two daughters. But Samuel grew up at the [Lord]'s house in Shiloh.

Eli Warns His Sons

25 If you harm another person, God can help make things right between the two of you. But if you commit a crime against the [Lord], no one can help you!”
But the [Lord] had already decided to kill them. So he kept them from listening to their father.

A Prophet Speaks //to Eli

26  t Each day, as Samuel grew older, the [Lord] was pleased with him, and so were the people.

27 One day a prophet came to Eli and gave him this message from the [Lord]:
When your ancestors were slaves of the king of Egypt, I came and showed them who I am.

28-29 t Out of all the tribes of Israel, I chose your family to be my priests. I wanted them to offer sacrifices and burn incense to me and to find out from me what I want my people to do. I commanded everyone to bring their sacrifices here where I live, and I allowed you and your family to keep those that were not offered to me on the altar.
But you honor your sons instead of me! You don't respectt the sacrifices and offerings that are brought to me, and you've all grown fat from eating the best parts.
30 I am the [Lord], the God of Israel. I promised to always let your family serve me as priests, but now I tell you that I cannot do this any longer! I honor anyone who honors me, but I put a curse on anyone who hates me.

31 The time will come when I will kill you and everyone else in your family. Not one of you will live to an old age.
32 Your familyt will have a lot of trouble. I will be kind to Israel, t but everyone in your family will die young. 33 If I let anyone from your family be a priest, hist life will be full of sadness and sorrow. But most of the men in your family will die a violent death!t

34 t To prove to you that I will do these things, your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will die on the same day.
35 I have chosen someone else to be my priest, someone who will be faithful and obey me. I will always let his family serve as priests and help my chosen king. 36 But if anyone is left from your family, he will come to my priest and beg for money or a little bread. He may even say to my priest, “Please let me be a priest, so I will at least have something to eat.”
