1 Die Philister aber stritten wider Israel; und die Männer von Israel flohen vor den Philistern, und Erschlagene fielen auf dem Gebirge Gilboa.2 Und die Philister setzten Saul und seinen Söhnen hart nach; und die Philister erschlugen Jonathan und Abinadab und Malkischua, die Söhne Sauls.3 Und der Streit wurde heftig wider Saul, und es erreichten ihn die Schützen, Männer mit dem Bogen; und es wurde ihm sehr angst vor den Schützen.4 Da sprach Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Ziehe dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit, daß nicht diese Unbeschnittenen kommen und mich durchbohren und mich mißhandeln! Sein Waffenträger aber wollte nicht, denn er fürchtete sich sehr. Da nahm Saul das Schwert und stürzte sich darein.5 Und als sein Waffenträger sah, daß Saul tot war, da stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb mit ihm.6 So starben Saul und seine drei Söhne und sein Waffenträger, auch alle seine Männer an selbigem Tage zugleich.7 Und als die Männer von Israel, die diesseit des Tales und diesseit des Jordan waren, sahen, daß die Männer von Israel geflohen, und daß Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, da verließen sie die Städte und flohen; und die Philister kamen und wohnten darin.8 Und es geschah am folgenden Tage, da kamen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuziehen; und sie fanden Saul und seine drei Söhne auf dem Gebirge Gilboa liegen.9 Und sie hieben ihm den Kopf ab und zogen ihm seine Waffen aus; und sie sandten in das Land der Philister ringsumher, um die frohe Botschaft in den Häusern ihrer Götzen und unter dem Volke zu verkünden.10 Und sie legten seine Waffen in das Haus der Astaroth, und seinen Leichnam hefteten sie an die Mauer von Beth-Schan.11 Als aber die Bewohner von Jabes-Gilead über ihn hörten, was die Philister mit Saul getan hatten,12 da machten sich alle tapferen Männer auf und gingen die ganze Nacht; und sie nahmen den Leichnam Sauls und die Leichname seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Beth-Schan weg; und sie kamen nach Jabes zurück und verbrannten sie daselbst.13 Und sie nahmen ihre Gebeine und begruben sie unter der Tamariske zu Jabes, und fasteten sieben Tage.

The Death of Saul

1 Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel. The men of Israel fled from the Philistines and many of them fell dead on Mount Gilboa.2 The Philistines stayed right on the heelst of Saul and his sons. Theyt struck down Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua.

3 Saul himself was in the thick of the battle;t the archerst spotted him and wounded him severely.
4 Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and stab me with it! Otherwise these uncircumcised people will come, stab me, and torture me.” But his armor bearer refused to do it, because he was very afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on it.5 When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died with him.

6 So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men died together that day.

7 When the men of Israel who were in the valley and across the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. The Philistines came and occupied them.
8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip loot from the corpses, they discovered Saul and his three sons lying deadt on Mount Gilboa.9 They cut off Saul’st head and stripped him of his armor. They sent messengers to announce the news in the temple of their idols and among their people throughout the surrounding land of the Philistines.

10 They placed Saul’s armor in the temple of the Ashtorethss and hung his corpse on the city wall of Beth Shan.
11 When the residents of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,12 all their warriors set out and traveled throughout the night. They took Saul’s corpse and the corpses of his sons from the city wall of Beth Shan and wents to Jabesh, where they burned them.

13 They took the bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh; then they fasted for seven days.
