Geroepen om zuiver te leven

1 Broeders en zusters, wat uw dagelijkse leven betreft vragen wij u dringend in de naam van onze Here Jezus om u zo te gedragen dat God er vreugde aan beleeft. U deed dat al, maar wij vragen u dringend dat nog meer te doen.2 U weet toch wel dat wij u in opdracht van de Here Jezus dit duidelijk hebben verteld?3 God wil namelijk dat u Hem helemaal toebehoort en dat u zich ver houdt van elke vorm van ontucht.4 Ieder van u moet zijn lichaam beheersen, zodat het niet onteerd wordt, maar aan God toebehoort.5 Geef niet toe aan uw hartstochten en begeerten, zoals gebeurt bij mensen die God niet kennen.6 Benadeel en bedrieg uw medemens op dit gebied niet. Wij hebben u gewaarschuwd dat als u zulke dingen doet, de Here u daarvoor zal straffen.7 God heeft ons niet tot losbandigheid geroepen, maar tot een leven dat Hem is toegewijd.

8 Wie dit afwijst, is niet ongehoorzaam aan mensen, maar aan God, die ons zijn Heilige Geest geeft.
9 Over de liefde van christenen onderling hoef ik u niet te schrijven. God Zelf heeft u geleerd hoe u elkaar moet liefhebben.10 Dat blijkt wel uit uw houding tegenover de christenen in heel Macedonië. Toch willen wij u er nadrukkelijk op wijzen dat die liefde moet blijven groeien.11 Zet u volledig in om een rustig leven te leiden, bemoei u met uw eigen zaken en verdien uw eigen boterham, zoals we dat al eerder hebben gezegd.

12 Dan zullen buitenstaanders u vertrouwen en respecteren en u zult bij niemand uw hand hoeven ophouden.
13 Over wat er gebeurt met christenen die sterven, willen wij u niet in het onzekere laten. U hoeft over hen geen verdriet te hebben, zoals de mensen die zonder hoop leven.14 Want zoals wij geloven dat Jezus na zijn dood weer levend is geworden, geloven wij ook dat God de gestorven christenen met Christus zal laten terugkomen.15 Wat wij hier zeggen, is het woord van de Here: wij die bij de terugkeer van de Here nog leven, zullen Hem niet eerder tegemoet gaan dan de gestorvenen.16 Want als het signaal klinkt, als een van de voornaamste engelen zijn stem laat horen en de trompet van God schalt, zal de Here Zelf uit de hemel neerdalen. Dan zullen de gestorven christenen eerst opstaan17 en daarna zullen wij die op dat moment nog leven, met hen in de wolken worden opgenomen om de Here in de lucht te ontmoeten en altijd bij Hem te zijn.

18 Met dit nieuws kunt u elkaar troosten en bemoedigen.

1 Finally then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as ye received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, even as ye do walk, --that ye abound more and more.2 For ye know what charge we gave you through the Lord Jesus.3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye abstain from fornication;4 that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor,5 not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God;6 that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in the matter: because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.7 For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification.8 Therefore he that rejecteth, rejecteth not man, but God, who giveth his Holy Spirit unto you.9 But concerning love of the brethren ye have no need that one write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another;10 for indeed ye do it toward all the brethren that are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, that ye abound more and more;11 and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you;12 that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing.13 But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope.14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we that are alive, that are left unto the coming of the Lord, shall in no wise precede them that are fallen asleep.16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first;17 then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
