De dag dat Jezus Christus terugkomt

1 Ik hoef u niet te schrijven wanneer en onder welke omstandigheden dit allemaal zal gebeuren, vrienden.2 U weet immers dat de grote dag van de Here geheel onverwacht komt, als een dief in de nacht.

3 Terwijl de mensen zeggen: ‘Er is rust en vrede, er dreigt geen enkel gevaar,’ zal de vernietiging hen plotseling overvallen, zoals de weeën een zwangere vrouw. Zij zullen nergens heen kunnen vluchten.
4 Broeders en zusters, u leeft echter niet in het donker. Die dag zal u niet overvallen als een dief.5 Want u bent allemaal kinderen van het licht, kinderen van de dag. Wij hebben niets te maken met de nacht en het donker.6 Daarom moeten wij altijd op onze hoede zijn en niet slapen zoals de anderen. Kijk naar die dag uit en blijf nuchter.7 In de nacht slapen de mensen en bedrinken dronkaards zich.8 Maar laten wij die bij de dag horen, nuchter blijven. Wij moeten onszelf beschermen met het harnas van geloof en liefde, en met de helm van de hoop op het heil.9 Want God heeft ons niet bestemd om door Hem bestraft te worden, maar om gered te worden door onze Here Jezus Christus.10 Jezus is voor ons gestorven om ons voor altijd met Hem te laten leven, of we bij zijn terugkeer nu al gestorven of nog in leven zijn.

11 Blijf elkaar dus bemoedigen en versterken, maar dat doet u al.
12 Broeders en zusters, wij vragen u respect te hebben voor uw leiders die door de Here zijn aangewezen. Zij verrichten veel werk onder u en wijzen u terecht waar dat nodig is.

13 Geef hun veel waardering en houd van hen, omdat zij zoveel voor u doen. Leef met elkaar in vrede.
14 Vrienden, u moet de mensen die hun plicht verzaken, heel ernstig waarschuwen. Help en steun hen die bang zijn, ook de zwakken. Heb geduld met iedereen.

15 Let erop dat niemand kwaad met kwaad vergeldt, maar wees altijd goed voor elkaar en voor anderen.
16 Wees ook altijd blij.17 Bid onophoudelijk.

18 Wat er ook gebeurt, dank altijd God, want Hij wil dat u als christenen zo leeft.
19 Verdrijf de Heilige Geest niet uit uw hart.20 Veracht niet wat namens God gezegd wordt.21 U moet alles wat gezegd en gedaan wordt, op zijn echtheid beproeven en alles wat goed is, vasthouden.

22 Vermijd alles wat slecht is.
23 Laat het zo zijn dat de God van de vrede u volledig voor Zichzelf afzondert en dat uw hele wezen – geest, ziel en lichaam – zuiver blijft tot de komst van onze Here Jezus Christus.

24 En Hij die u geroepen heeft, is trouw en zal doen wat Hij beloofd heeft.
25 Broeders en zusters, bid voor ons.26 Groet alle gelovigen die bij u zijn met een heilige kus.27 En in naam van de Here draag ik u op deze brief aan hen allen voor te lezen.

28 Ik wens u de genade van onze Here Jezus Christus toe.

1 Thessalonians 5

1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you.2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.3 When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief:5 for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness;6 so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober.7 For they that sleep sleep in the night: and they that are drunken are drunken in the night.8 But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.9 For God appointed us not into wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,10 who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.11 Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do.12 But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;13 and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.14 And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all.15 See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all.16 Rejoice always;17 pray without ceasing;18 in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward.19 Quench not the Spirit;20 despise not prophesyings;21 prove all things; hold fast that which is good;22 abstain from every form of evil.23 And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it.25 Brethren, pray for us.26 Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss.27 I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the brethren.28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
