1 Quando succederà tutto questo? Non c’è bisogno che vi dica niente in proposito, cari fratelli,2 perché sapete benissimo che nessuno lo sa. Il giorno del Signore verrà improvvisamente, come un ladro di notte.3 Quando la gente dirà: « Tutto va bene, c’è pace e sicurezza dappertutto », allora ecco inaspettatamente la rovina, improvvisa come le doglie di una donna incinta. E non ci sarà scampo.4 Ma voi, cari fratelli, non siete all’oscuro, per quanto riguarda queste cose, e quando verrà quel giorno, non vi coglierà di sorpresa come un ladro.5 Infatti, voi siete tutti figli della luce e del giorno. Noi credenti non facciamo parte delle tenebre e della notte.6 Perciò dobbiamo stare in guardia e non dormire come fanno gli altri; dobbiamo rimanere svegli e pronti per il suo ritorno!7 Di notte la gente dorme e di notte si ubriaca.8 Ma noi, che facciamo parte del giorno, dobbiamo restare sobri, protetti dalla corazza della fede e dell’amore, e con l’elmo della gioiosa speranza della salvezza.9 Perché Dio non ci ha destinati a subire il suo castigo, ma ci ha scelto per salvarci, grazie a ciò che ha fatto il nostro Signore, Gesù Cristo.10 Egli è morto per noi, per farci vivere sempre con lui, sia che noi siamo morti o vivi al momento del suo ritorno.11 Perciò, incoraggiatevi ed edificatevi a vicenda, come infatti state già facendo.

12 Cari fratelli, vi preghiamo di avere riguardo per i rappresentanti della vostra chiesa, che lavorano tanto fra voi e vi mettono in guardia contro tutto ciò che è male.13 Teneteli in grande considerazione ed amateli con tutto il cuore, perché non si risparmiano per aiutarvi.14 E vivete in pace fra voi. Fratelli, correggete quelli che vivono male, confortate gli abbattuti, prendetevi cura di quelli che sono deboli e siate pazienti con tutti.15 Badate che nessuno ripaghi il male col male, ma cercate sempre di fare del bene, tanto fra voi che a tutti gli altri.16 Siate sempre contenti17 e continuate a pregare.18 Qualunque cosa accada, ringraziate sempre il Signore, perché è questo che Dio vuole da voi che appartenete a Gesù Cristo.19 Non ostacolate l’azione dello Spirito Santo20 e non disprezzate quelli che profetizzano,21 ma controllate tutto ciò che viene detto per accertarvi che sia vero e, se lo è, accettatelo.22 Tenetevi alla larga da ogni specie di male.23 Che il Signore, che dona la pace, vi renda completamente puri e devoti a lui, e che tutto il vostro essere: spirito, anima e corpo, sia conservato forte e senza difetti fino al giorno del ritorno dei nostro Signore, Gesù Cristo.24 Dio, che vi ha chiamati ad essere suoi figli, è fedele, e farà tutto questo per voi, come ha promesso.25 Fratelli, pregate per noi.26 Salutate per me con un bacio fraterno tutti gli altri credenti.27 Vi scongiuro, nel nome del Signore, di fare in modo che questa lettera sia letta a tutti i fratelli.28 La grazia del Signore nostro, Gesù Cristo, sia con voi tutti.

1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that aught be written unto you.2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.3 When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief:5 for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness;6 so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober.7 For they that sleep sleep in the night: and they that are drunken are drunken in the night.8 But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.9 For God appointed us not into wrath, but unto the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,10 who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.11 Wherefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as also ye do.12 But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;13 and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.14 And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all.15 See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all.16 Rejoice always;17 pray without ceasing;18 in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus to you-ward.19 Quench not the Spirit;20 despise not prophesyings;21 prove all things; hold fast that which is good;22 abstain from every form of evil.23 And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it.25 Brethren, pray for us.26 Salute all the brethren with a holy kiss.27 I adjure you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the brethren.28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
