1 Timoteus 1

Paulus groet vir Timoteus

1 Ek, Paulus, is ’n tapostel van Christus Jesus. God en Christus Jesus het vir my gesê dat ek ’n apostel van Christus Jesus moet wees, God wat vir ons gered het en Christus Jesus wat sal doen wat Hy belowe het.

2 Ek, Paulus, skryf hierdie brief vir jou, Timoteus. Jy is vir my soos my eie kind, want ek het jou gehelp om in Christus te glo. Ek bid dat God die Vader en Christus Jesus ons Here tgenadig sal wees vir jou en dat Hy goed sal wees vir jou wanneer jy swaarkry. Ek bid ook dat Hy vir jou vrede sal gee.

Jy moet oppas vir mense wat verkeerde dinge sê


3 Voordat ek na die provinsie Masedonië gegaan het, het ek vir jou mooi gevra om in Efese te bly. Nou vra ek weer vir jou mooi om daar te bly sodat jy vir party mense kan sê hulle moet ophou om verkeerde dinge vir die mense te leer. 4 Hulle moet ook ophou om te luister na al die stories wat nie waar is nie en hulle moet ook nie dink dat baie name van tvoorouers belangrik is nie. Hierdie dinge laat mense stry met mekaar, hierdie dinge help hulle nie om te glo dat God ’n plan het om die mense te red wat in Christus glo nie. 5 Ek sê dit vir julle omdat tgelowiges lief moet wees vir mekaar en vir God. Gelowiges moet mense wees wat net vir God dien, hulle moet goed weet wat is reg en wat is verkeerd, en hulle moet waarlik in Christus glo. 6 Party mense het opgehou om dit te doen en nou hou hulle aan om dinge te praat wat niks beteken nie.

7 Hulle wil vir ander mense leer wat die tWette van Moses sê. Hulle dink hulle weet alles, maar hulle verstaan self nie wat hulle sê nie en hulle verstaan ook nie die dinge waaroor hulle praat nie.

Hoe ons die wette moet gebruik


8 Ons weet dat die tWette van Moses goed is as ’n mens dit reg gebruik soos ’n mens dit moet gebruik. 9 Ons weet dat God nie die wette gegee het vir mense wat self doen wat die wette sê nie. Vir wie het God die wette gegee? Hy het dit gegee vir mense wat nie wil luister na die wette nie en wat topstandig is teen die wette. Hy het die wette gegee vir mense wat nie dink aan God nie en wat sondaars is, vir mense wat nie vir God aanbid of dien nie en wat twêreldse mense is, vir mense wat hulle ouers vermoor en vir ander moordenaars. 10 God het die wette gegee vir mense wat tonsedelik lewe, vir mans wat met mans tonsedelike dinge doen, vir mense wat ander mense vang en hulle verkoop om tslawe te wees, vir mense wat lieg en in die hof leuens vertel. Die wette is vir mense wat dinge doen wat verkeerd is, hulle doen niks wat ’n mens móét doen nie, hulle doen niks van die goeie dinge wat ons geleer het nie.

11 Ons het dinge geleer wat pas by die goeie boodskap van God wat Koning is. Ons moet altyd vir God prys. God het die goeie boodskap vir my gegee om vir julle te bring.

Paulus sê dankie vir Jesus Christus wat vir hom krag gegee het


12 Ek sê dankie vir Christus Jesus, ons Here, want Hy het vir my die krag gegee om my werk te doen. Ek sê ook vir Hom dankie dat Hy gedink het ek sal doen wat Hy wil hê, dankie dat Hy vir my die werk gegee het om die goeie boodskap te bring. 13 Voordat ek ’n tgelowige geword het, het ek slegte dinge gesê van Christus, ek het die mense van sy kerk verdruk en tbeledig. Maar Christus was tgenadig vir my, omdat ek daardie dinge gedoen het toe ek nog nie in Hom geglo het nie, ek het nie geweet dat ek verkeerd doen nie. 14 Ons Here was baie goed vir my. Hy het my laat glo in Hom, en Hy het my lief gemaak vir mense. Dit gebeur wanneer ’n mens aan Christus Jesus behoort. 15 Wat ek nou wil sê, is waar, julle kan dit glo: Christus Jesus het na die wêreld gekom om sondaars te red. Ek is die grootste sondaar. 16 Maar Christus Jesus was baie goed vir my. Ek was die grootste sondaar, maar Hy het vir my gewys dat Hy baie geduldig is. Daarom het ek ’n tvoorbeeld geword vir ander mense, mense wat ook in Hom kan glo en die tewige lewe kan kry.

17 Ek bid dat die mense altyd vir God sal teer en prys, God wat altyd Koning is en wat altyd lewe. Ons sien nie vir God nie, net Hy is God. Amen.

Paulus sê Timoteus moet aanhou werk


18 Timoteus, jy is vir my soos my eie kind. tProfete het voorheen gesê wat met jou sal gebeur. Daarom sê ek ook nou vir jou wat jy moet doen sodat jy soos ’n goeie soldaat kan aanhou veg. 19 Jy moet aanhou glo en jy moet onthou wat is reg en wat is verkeerd. Party mense wou dit nie onthou nie en hulle het opgehou glo, hulle geloof was soos wanneer ’n skip stukkend stamp op die rotse en sink. 20 Twee van hierdie mense is Himeneus en Aleksander. Ek het hulle vir die tSatan gegee sodat hulle kan leer om nie verkeerd te praat oor God nie.

1 Timothy 1

1 I, Paul, am writing this letter. I am an apostle of Christ Jesus, just as God our Savior commanded. Christ Jesus also commanded it. We have put our hope in him.

2 Timothy, I am sending you this letter. You are my true son in the faith.
May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy and peace.

Paul Warns Against Certain Teachers of the Law

3 Stay there in Ephesus. That is what I told you to do when I went into Macedonia. I want you to command certain people not to teach things that aren't true.4 Command them not to spend their time on stories that aren't completely true. They must not waste time on family histories that never end. Things like that cause people to argue instead of doing God's work. His work is done by faith.
5 Love is the purpose of my command. Love comes from a pure heart. It comes from a good sense of what is right and wrong. It comes from faith that is honest and true.
6 Some have wandered away from those teachings. They would rather talk about things that have no meaning.7 They want to be teachers of the law. And they are very sure about that law. But they don't know what they are talking about.
8 We know that the law is good if it is used properly.9 We also know that the law isn't made for godly people. It is made for those who break the law. It is for those who refuse to obey. It is for ungodly and sinful people. It is for those who aren't holy and who don't believe. It is for those who kill their fathers or mothers. It is for murderers.
10 It is for those who commit adultery. It is for those who have a twisted view of sex. It is for people who buy and sell slaves. It is for liars. It is for those who give witness to things that aren't true. And it is for anything else that is the opposite of true teaching.
11 True teaching agrees with the glorious good news of the blessed God. He trusted me with that good news.

The Lord Pours Out His Grace on Paul

12 I am thankful to Christ Jesus our Lord. He has given me strength. I thank him that he considered me faithful. And I thank him for appointing me to serve him.
13 I used to speak evil things against Jesus. I tried to hurt his followers. I really pushed them around. But God showed me mercy anyway. I did those things without knowing any better. I wasn't a believer.
14 Our Lord poured out more and more of his grace on me. Along with it came faith and love from Christ Jesus.
15 Here is a saying that you can trust. It should be accepted completely. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
And I am the worst sinner of all.16 But for that very reason, God showed me mercy. And I am the worst of sinners. He showed me mercy so that Christ Jesus could show that he is very patient. I was an example for those who would come to believe in him. Then they would receive eternal life.
17 The eternal King will never die. He can't be seen. He is the only God. Give him honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
18 My son Timothy, I give you these teachings. They are in keeping with the prophecies that were once made about you. By following them, you can fight the good fight.19 Then you will hold on to faith. You will hold on to a good sense of what is right and wrong.
Some have not accepted these teachings. By doing that, they have destroyed their faith. They are like a ship that has sunk.20 Hymenaeus and Alexander are among them. I have handed them over to Satan. That will teach them not to speak evil things against God.
