1 Timothy 1

Salutation et instructions de Paul

1 De la part de Paul, apôtre de Jésus-Christ par ordre de Dieu notre Sauveur et du [Seigneur] Jésus-Christ notre espérance,

2 à Timothée, mon enfant véritable dans la foi: que la grâce, la compassion et la paix te soient données de la part de Dieu notre Père et de Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur!
3 A mon départ pour la Macédoine, je t'ai encouragé à rester à Ephèse pour donner instruction à certaines personnes de ne pas enseigner d'autres doctrines4 et de ne pas s'attacher à des fables et des généalogies sans fin, qui produisent des controverses au lieu de servir le projet de Dieu qui s'accomplit dans la foi.5 Le but de ces instructions, c'est un amour qui provienne d'un cœur pur, d'une bonne conscience et d'une foi sincère.6 Certains se sont écartés de cette ligne et se sont égarés dans des discours creux.7 Ils veulent être des professeurs de la loit, mais ils ne comprennent rien à ce qu'ils disent ni à ce qu'ils affirment avec assurance.8 Nous savons que la loi est bonne, pourvu qu'on en fasse un usage légitime,9 en sachant bien qu'elle n'est pas faite pour les justes mais pour les malfaiteurs et les rebelles, les impies et les pécheurs, les sacrilèges et les profanateurs, ceux qui tueraient père et mère, les meurtriers,10 ceux qui vivent dans l'immoralité sexuelle, les homosexuels, les trafiquants d'esclaves, les menteurs, les parjures et tout ce qui est contraire à la saine doctrine.

11 Voilà ce qui est conforme au glorieux Evangile du Dieu bienheureux tel qu'il m'a été confié.
12 Je suis reconnaissant envers celui qui m'a fortifié, Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur, car il m'a jugé digne de confiance en m'établissant à son service,13 moi qui étais auparavant un blasphémateur, un persécuteurt, un homme violent. Cependant, il m'a été fait grâce parce que j'agissais par ignorance, dans mon incrédulité.

14 Et la grâce de notre Seigneur a surabondé, avec la foi et l'amour qui sont en Jésus-Christ.
15 Cette parole est certaine et digne d'être acceptée sans réserve: Jésus-Christ est venu dans le monde pour sauver des pécheurs. Je suis moi-même le premiert d'entre eux,16 mais il m'a été fait grâce afin que Jésus-Christ montre en moi le premier toute sa patience et que je serve ainsi d'exemple à ceux qui croiraient en lui pour la vie éternelle.

17 Au roi des siècles, au Dieu immortel, invisible et seul [sage] soient honneur et gloire aux siècles des siècles! Amen!
18 Timothée, mon enfant, voici l'instruction que je t'adresse, conformément aux prophéties faites précédemment à ton sujet: t'appuyant sur elles, combats le bon combat19 en gardant la foi et une bonne conscience. Cette conscience, quelques-uns l'ont rejetée, et ils ont fait naufrage par rapport à la foi.

20 C'est le cas d'Hyménée et d'Alexandre, que j'ai livrés à Satant afin qu'ils apprennent à ne plus blasphémert.

1 Timothy 1

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Saviour, and Christ Jesus our hope;2 unto Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.3 As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I was going into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine,4 neither to give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questionings, rather than a dispensation of God which is in faith; so do I now.5 But the end of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned:6 from which things some having swerved have turned aside unto vain talking;7 desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor whereof they confidently affirm.8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully,9 as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and unruly, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,10 for fornicators, for abusers of themselves with men, for menstealers, for liars, for false swearers, and if there be any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine;11 according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.12 I thank him that enabled me, even Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he counted me faithful, appointing me to his service;13 though I was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief;14 and the grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.15 Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief:16 howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me as chief might Jesus Christ show forth all his longsuffering, for an ensample of them that should thereafter believe on him unto eternal life.17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.18 This charge I commit unto thee, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which led the way to thee, that by them thou mayest war the good warfare;19 holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust from them made shipwreck concerning the faith:20 of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I delivered unto Satan, that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
