Lavoro e denaro…

1 I dipendenti cristiani devono lavorare con impegno per i loro padroni e rispettarli, perché non si creda che i cristiani sono lavoratori da poco, e per questo motivo si possa parlar male del nome e dell’insegnamento del Signore.2 Se il padrone è cristiano, i dipendenti non devono trattarlo con meno rispetto, anzi, devono lavorare ancor di più, appunto perché chi riceve il beneficio dei loro servizi è un fratello nella fede.
Insegna queste verità, Timòteo, ed incoraggia tutti ad osservarle.3 Si sa che certuni possono rinnegare queste cose, che sono le parole del Signore nostro, Gesù Cristo, e l’insegnamento della nostra fede, che è in armonia con l’amore.4 Se qualcuno insegna diversamente è superbo e ignorante, dedito ai giochi di parole e alle questioni inutili, da cui nascono invidia, discordia, maldicenza, sospetti maligni e discussioni senza fine.5 Costoro hanno la mente bacata dal peccato ed hanno perduto il senso della verità; per loro il Vangelo è soltanto un mezzo per far soldi. State alla larga da gente del genere!6 Volete davvero essere ricchi? Lo siete già, se avete la fede e vi accontentate.7 Dopo tutto, quando veniamo al mondo non ci portiamo appresso niente; e neppure possiamo portare niente con noi, quando moriamo.8 Perciò, quando abbiamo da mangiare e da vestirci, accontentiamoci.9 Quelli invece che vogliono accumulare ricchezze, cadono nella tentazione di commettere qualsiasi cattiva azione pur di far soldi e si lasciano ingannare, sopraffatti da desideri stupidi, che li mandano in rovina e in perdizione.10 Perché l’amore per i soldi è il primo gradino verso tutti i peccati. Certe persone si sono perfino allontanate da Dio per questo, creandosi un’infinità di dispiaceri.11 Ma tu, Timòteo, uomo di Dio, evita tutte queste cose. Impegnati invece in tutto ciò che è giusto e buono, coltivando la tua fede nel Signore, l’amore per gli altri, la pazienza e la dolcezza.12 Combatti la buona battaglia della fede. Afferra la vita eterna, che Dio ti ha dato, quando hai fatto quella bella testimonianza di fede alla presenza di tanti testimoni.13 Ti scongiuro davanti a Dio, che dà la vita ad ogni cosa, e davanti a Gesù Cristo, che testimoniò la sua fede alla presenza di Ponzio Pilato:14 ubbidisci a tutto ciò che Dio ti ha detto di fare e conservati puro in modo che nessuno possa trovarti in errore da adesso fino al ritorno del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo.15 Perché, quando sarà il momento, Cristo sarà reso visibile dall’unico Dio, benedetto e onnipotente, il Re dei re, il Signore dei signori,16 il solo che non può mai morire e abita in una luce inaccessibile, a cui nessun uomo si può avvicinare. Nessun comune mortale lo ha mai visto, né può vederlo. A lui onore e potenza per sempre. Amen.

I ricchi.

17 Raccomanda ai ricchi di non essere superbi e di non far affidamento sul loro denaro, che presto scomparirà. La loro speranza invece si deve fondare in Dio, che ci dà ogni cosa in abbondanza, perché ne possiamo godere.18 Raccomanda ai ricchi di servirsi del proprio denaro per fare del bene, arricchendosi di opere buone, e di essere pronti a dare a chi è nel bisogno e a dividere con altri qualsiasi cosa Dio ha dato loro.19 Così facendo, si metteranno da parte un vero tesoro in cielo; e questo è l’unico sicuro investimento per l’eternità. Vivranno inoltre una vita cristiana fruttifera qui in terra.20 Timòteo, non venir meno a queste cose, di cui Dio ti ha incaricato. Evita le chiacchiere inutili e contrarie alla fede con quelli che si vantano della loro « sapienza » e, così facendo, dimostrano di esserne privi.21 Alcuni di questi hanno perso la cosa più importante della vita: la fede, perché non conoscono Dio. La grazia di Dio sia con tutti voi.

1 Let as many as are servants under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, that the name of God and the doctrine be not blasphemed.2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but let them serve them the rather, because they that partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. These things teach and exhort.3 If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to sound words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;4 he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,5 wranglings of men corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, supposing that godliness is a way of gain.6 But godliness with contentment is great gain:7 for we brought nothing into the world, for neither can we carry anything out;8 but having food and covering we shall be therewith content.9 But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition.10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.12 Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold on the life eternal, whereunto thou wast called, and didst confess the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.13 I charge thee in the sight of God, who giveth life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed the good confession;14 that thou keep the commandment, without spot, without reproach, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:15 which in its own times he shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;16 who only hath immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and power eternal. Amen.17 Charge them that are rich in this present world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;18 that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to communicate;19 laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the life which is life indeed.20 O Timothy, guard that which is committed unto thee, turning away from the profane babblings and oppositions of the knowledge which is falsely so called;21 which some professing have erred concerning the faith.
