1 Giosafat, re di Giuda, tornò sano e salvo a casa sua a Gerusalemme.2 E il veggente Jehu, figliuolo di Hanani, andò incontro a Giosafat, e gli disse: "Dovevi tu dare aiuto ad un empio e amar quelli che odiano l’Eterno? Per questo fatto hai attirato su di te l’ira dell’Eterno.3 Nondimeno si son trovate in te delle buone cose, giacché hai fatti sparire dal paese gl’idoli d’Astarte, e hai applicato il cuor tuo alla ricerca di Dio".4 Giosafat rimase a Gerusalemme; poi fece di nuovo un giro fra il popolo, da Beer-Sceba alla contrada montuosa d’Efraim, e lo ricondusse all’Eterno, all’Iddio de’ suoi padri.

5 E stabilì dei giudici nel paese, in tutte le città fortificate di Giuda, città per città, e disse ai giudici:6 "Badate bene a quello che fate; poiché voi amministrate la giustizia, non per servire ad un uomo ma per servire all’Eterno; il quale sarà con voi negli affari della giustizia.7 Or dunque il timor dell’Eterno sia in voi; agite con circospezione, poiché presso l’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio nostro, non v’è né perversità, né riguardo a qualità di persone, né accettazione di doni".

8 Giosafat, tornato che fu a Gerusalemme, stabilì anche quivi dei Leviti, dei sacerdoti e dei capi delle case patriarcali d’Israele per render giustizia nel nome dell’Eterno, e per sentenziare nelle liti.9 E diede loro i suoi ordini, dicendo: "Voi farete così, con timore dell’Eterno, con fedeltà e con cuore integro:10 In qualunque lite che vi sia portata dinanzi dai vostri fratelli dimoranti nelle loro città, sia che si tratti d’un omicidio o d’una legge o d’un comandamento o d’uno statuto o d’un precetto, illuminateli, affinché non si rendano colpevoli verso l’Eterno, e l’ira sua non piombi su voi e sui vostri fratelli. Così facendo, voi non vi renderete colpevoli.11 Ed ecco, il sommo sacerdote Amaria vi sarà preposto per tutti gli affari che concernono l’Eterno; e Zebadia, figliuolo d’Ismaele, capo della casa di Giuda, per tutti gli affari che concernono il re; e avete a vostra disposizione dei Leviti, come magistrati. Fatevi cuore, mettetevi all’opra, e l’Eterno sia con l’uomo dabbene!"

1 When King Jehoshaphat of Judah returned home safely to Jerusalem,s2 the prophett Jehu son of Hanani confronted him;t he said to King Jehoshaphat, “Is it right to help the wicked and be an ally of those who oppose the Lord?t Because you have done this the Lord is angry with you!t

3 Nevertheless you have done some good things;t you removedt the Asherah poles from the land and you were determined to follow the Lord.”t

Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges

4 Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem.s He went out among the people from Beer Sheba to the hill country of Ephraim and encouraged them to followt the Lord God of their ancestors.t5 He appointed judges throughout the land and in each of the fortified cities of Judah.t6 He told the judges, “Be careful what you do,t for you are not judging for men, but for the Lord, who will be with you when you make judicial decisions.

7 Respect the Lord and make careful decisions, for the Lord our God disapproves of injustice, partiality, and bribery.”t
8 In Jerusalem Jehoshaphat appointed some Levites, priests, and Israelite family leaders to judge on behalf of the Lordt and to settle disputes among the residents of Jerusalem.s9 He commanded them: “Carry out your duties with respect for the Lord, with honesty, and with pure motives.t10 Whenever your countrymen who live in the cities bring a case before yout (whether it involves a violent crimet or other matters related to the law, commandments, rules, and regulations), warn them that they must not sin against the Lord. If you fail to do so, God will be angry with you and your colleagues; but if you obey, you will be free of guilt.t

11 You will report to Amariah the chief priest in all matters pertaining to the Lord’s law, and to Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the family of Judah, in all matters pertaining to the king.t The Levites will serve as officials before you. Confidently carry out your duties!t May the Lord be with those who do well!”
