L’autorità di Paolo.

1 Io, Paolo, vi esorto con gentilezza e umiltà, come farebbe Cristo stesso. Nonostante ciò, alcuni di voi dicono: « Quand’è lontano, Paolo manda lettere severe, quando, invece, è con noi ha paura di alzare la voce! »2 Quando verrò, vi prego di non costringermi a dimostrarvi quanto posso essere duro e severo! Non voglio mettere in pratica quello che ho in mente contro certuni, secondo i quali le mie azioni e le mie parole sarebbero dettate da ragioni umane.3 Certo, anch’io sono un essere umano qualsiasi, ma non mi lascio guidare da interessi umani, né adotto metodi umani per vincere le mie battaglie.4 Per abbattere le fortezze del diavolo non mi servo delle armi degli uomini ma delle potenti armi di Dio.5 Con esse noi possiamo distruggere i ragionamenti e ogni ostacolo che si leva contro la conoscenza di Dio, e rendiamo sottomesso ogni pensiero all’obbedienza a Cristo.6 Perciò siamo pronti a punire qualsiasi disobbedienza, non appena la vostra obbedienza sarà completa.7 Il vostro guaio è che badate all’apparenza delle cose; mi vedete debole e senza forze, ma non guardate sotto la superficie. Eppure se qualcuno è convinto di appartenere a Cristo, tenga presente che anch’io sono di Cristo come lui.8 Può sembrare che mi dia più arie di quanto dovrei per l’autorità che il Signore mi ha dato (autorità esercitata per aiutarvi, non per farvi del male), ma non me ne vergogno.9 Dico questo perché non crediate che io cerchi d’intimidirvi con le mie lettere.10 Infatti c’è chi dice: « Non preoccupatevi delle sue lettere. Paolo sembra duro e severo, ma è tutto fumo e niente arrosto. Quando verrà qui, vedrete com’è debole, e ciò che dice non vale niente! »11 Chi dice queste cose stia pur certo che questa volta sarò duro e severo come le mie lettere!12 Non preoccupatevi, non voglio mettermi fra quelli che si lodano da soli, né paragonarmi a loro. Il guaio è che fanno soltanto paragoni fra di loro e si valutano secondo i propri criteri. Che stupidi!13 Invece noi non ci vantiamo oltre misura, ma restiamo nei limiti che Dio ha fissato per il nostro lavoro; un piano che ci ha permesso di arrivare a voi e ad altri.14 No, non ci arroghiamo troppi diritti, quando diciamo di avere autorità su di voi, perché siamo stati proprio noi i primi a portarvi la buona notizia che parlava di Cristo.15 Non ci stiamo vantando in modo esagerato per il lavoro che ha fatto qualcun altro; speriamo, invece, che la vostra fede cresca e che, sempre entro i limiti fissati per noi, il nostro lavoro fra voi sarà ingrandito considerevolmente.16 Dopo di ciò, potremo predicare il Vangelo ad altre regioni che sono più lontane della vostra, dove non c’è nessuno che lavora per il Signore. Allora non ci saranno discussioni se siamo o meno nella zona di qualcun altro, e nessuno potrà dire che ci vantiamo di lavori trovati belli e fatti.17 Come dicono le Scritture: « Chi si vanta, si vanti di ciò che il Signore ha fatto, e non di se stesso ».18 Quando qualcuno è orgoglioso di se stesso e di ciò che ha fatto, dimostra di non valere tanto, la cosa è ben differente quando, invece, è il Signore che lo approva!

2 Corinthians 10

1 Now I Paul myself entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am of good courage toward you:2 yea, I beseech you, that I may not when present show courage with the confidence wherewith I count to be bold against some, who count of us as if we walked according to the flesh.3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh4 (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds),5 casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;6 and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience shall be made full.7 Ye look at the things that are before your face. If any man trusteth in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ’s, so also are we.8 For though I should glory somewhat abundantly concerning our authority (which the Lord gave for building you up, and not for casting you down), I shall not be put to shame:9 that I may not seem as if I would terrify you by my letters.10 For, His letters, they say, are weighty and strong; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account.11 Let such a one reckon this, that, what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such are we also in deed when we are present.12 For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with certain of them that commend themselves: but they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.13 But we will not glory beyond our measure, but according to the measure of the province which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even unto you.14 For we stretch not ourselves overmuch, as though we reached not unto you: for we came even as far as unto you in the gospel of Christ:15 not glorying beyond our measure, that is, in other men’s labors; but having hope that, as your faith groweth, we shall be magnified in you according to our province unto further abundance,16 so as to preach the gospel even unto the parts beyond you, and not to glory in another’s province in regard of things ready to our hand.17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
