Pablo defiende su autoridad

1 Yo, Pablo, les ruego que me escuchen, ya que Cristo mismo es paciente y bondadoso. Algunos dicen que soy tímido cuando estoy con ustedes, pero muy valiente cuando estoy lejos.2 Cuando vaya a visitarlos, no me obliguen a ser duro con ustedes como espero serlo con los que piensan que nosotros vivimos como la gente del mundo.3 Es cierto que vivimos en este mundo, pero no luchamos como los seres humanos que viven en él.4 Las armas con las que luchamos no son de este mundo, sino que tienen el poder de Dios para destruir las fortalezas del enemigo. Con nuestras armas, también destruimos los argumentos de los que están en contra nuestra5 y acabamos con el orgullo que no le permite a la gente conocer a Dios. Así podemos capturar todos los pensamientos y hacer que obedezcan a Cristo.

6 Una vez que estemos seguros de la completa obediencia de ustedes, estaremos listos para castigar cualquier desobediencia.
7 Fíjense en los hechos que tienen frente a ustedes. Si alguien está convencido de que pertenece a Cristo, entonces debe entender que, al igual que él, nosotros también pertenecemos a Cristo.8 Tal vez insisto un poco más de lo debido en la autoridad que nos dio el Señor. Pero no me avergüenzo, porque él nos dio esa autoridad para ayudarlos a ustedes, no para causarles daño.9 No quiero que piensen que los trato de asustar con mis cartas.10 Algunos dicen: «Las cartas de Pablo son duras y causan una fuerte impresión, pero en persona se ve débil y su manera de hablar no infunde respeto a nadie».

11 Los que dicen eso deben entender que no hay diferencia entre lo que escribimos cuando estamos lejos y lo que hacemos cuando estamos con ustedes.
12 No nos atrevemos a ponernos al mismo nivel de los que se alaban a sí mismos. Al medirse con medidas que ellos mismos han creado, demuestran que en realidad no entienden nada.13 Nosotros no nos vamos a alabar más de la cuenta ni vamos a sobrepasar los límites del trabajo que nos asignaron. Dentro de esos límites está el trabajo con ustedes.14 Estaríamos saliéndonos de nuestros límites si no hubiéramos venido antes a ustedes, pero nosotros fuimos los primeros en llevarles las buenas noticiast acerca de Cristo.15 No tenemos ninguna intención de alabarnos indebidamente por el trabajo que otros han hecho. Al contrario, esperamos que a medida que su fe vaya creciendo, también crezca inmensamente nuestro trabajo entre ustedes.16 Así podremos comunicar la buena noticia de salvación en otros lugares más allá de su ciudad. Eso sí, sin presumir del trabajo que ya han hecho otros en los lugares que Dios les ha asignado.17 Las Escriturast dicen: «El que alabe algo, alabe lo que el Señor ha hecho».t

18 Pues no es aprobado el que se alaba a sí mismo, sino aquel a quien el Señor alaba.

Paul Describes Himself

1 Now I, Paul, myself urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ-I who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent!2 I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against some, who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh.3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh,4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.5  We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,6 and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete.

7 You are looking at things as they are outwardly. If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ's, so also are we.8 For even if I boast somewhat further about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame,9 for I do not wish to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters.10 For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his personal presence is unimpressive and his speech contemptible."11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present.

12 For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.13 But we will not boast beyond our measure, but within the measure of the sphere which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you.14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you, for we were the first to come even as far as you in the gospel of Christ;15 not boasting beyond our measure, that is, in other men's labors, but with the hope that as your faith grows, we will be, within our sphere, enlarged even more by you,16 so as to preach the gospel even to the regions beyond you, and not to boast in what has been accomplished in the sphere of another.17 But HE WHO BOASTS IS TO BOAST IN THE LORD.18 For it is not he who commends himself that is approved, but he whom the Lord commends.
