Chi sono i falsi maestri?

1 A quei tempi, però, ci furono anche dei falsi profeti, proprio come ci saranno anche fra voi dei falsi maestri, i quali, di nascosto, cercheranno di diffondere eresie che portano alla perdizione. Arriveranno perfino a rinnegare il Signore che li ha riscattati, ma faranno presto una fine terribile.2 Molti li seguiranno e vivranno come loro una vita corrotta e, per colpa loro, Cristo e la vera fede saranno diffamati.3 Questi maestri, per avidità di denaro, saranno pronti a dirvi qualsiasi cosa pur di sfruttarvi. Ma Dio li ha condannati già da tempo, e la loro rovina non tarderà a compiersi.4 Dio infatti non risparmiò neppure gli angeli che avevano peccato, ma li gettò nell’inferno, confinandoli in buie caverne, in attesa del giorno del giudizio.5 E non risparmiò neppure quelli che vivevano nei tempi antichi, prima del diluvio, ad eccezione di Noè, il solo che insegnasse la giustizia di Dio; lo salvò insieme con altri sette della sua famiglia. Fu allora che il Signore mandò il diluvio sulla terra, facendo morire tutti gli uomini malvagi.6 Più tardi, Dio condannò alla distruzione le città di Sòdoma e Gomorra, che furono ridotte in cenere, perché servissero come esempio di ciò che dovevano aspettarsi tutti gli uomini increduli e malvagi.7-8 Contemporaneamente, però, il Signore salvò Lot che era un uomo giusto, rattristato dalla depravazione dei propri concittadini; lo salvò facendolo uscire da Sòdoma. Lot, infatti, era un brav’uomo, che viveva in mezzo a quegli scellerati, assistendo giorno per giorno alle loro immoralità.9 Ciò vuol dire che il Signore può liberare i giusti dalle tentazioni e tener d’occhio, invece, i malvagi, per punirli nel giorno del giudizio finale.10 Egli punirà soprattutto quelli che, per soddisfare le loro passioni vergognose, si abbandonano senza ritegno ai piaceri sessuali e disprezzano l’autorità di Dio. Audaci e prepotenti, costoro non hanno paura nemmeno di insultare le glorie del mondo invisibile,11 mentre gli angeli del cielo, superiori in forza e potenza a questi falsi maestri, non osano portare davanti al Signore nessuna accusa offensiva contro di loro.12 Questi falsi maestri, come animali stupidi, agiscono per istinto e sono nati per essere catturati e distrutti. Essi offendono le cose che non conoscono, perciò periranno per la loro corruzione. Questa sarà la loro ricompensa per il male che fanno.13 Perché la loro felicità sta soltanto nel piacere del momento. Sono come tante macchie e tante vergogne fra voi, che venite ingannati, perché da una parte gozzovigliano nelle loro feste, mentre dall’altra partecipano ai vostri conviti fraterni, come se fossero persone oneste.14 Nessuna donna può sfuggire al loro sguardo pieno d’adulterio, e non ne hanno mai abbastanza di peccare. Adescano le persone deboli e instabili, e hanno il cuore ormai avvelenato dall’avidità di denaro. Sono uomini dannati e maledetti!15 Hanno lasciato la dritta via e si sono perduti, seguendo la via di Balaam, figlio di Beor, che si era lasciato affascinare dal denaro guadagnato col male,16 ma il suo folle progetto fu mandato a vuoto da un’asina, che si mise a parlargli con voce umana e lo rimproverò.17 Costoro sono inutili come fonti senz’acqua, promettono molto e non danno niente; sono instabili come nuvole portate dall’uragano. Sono condannati alle tenebre più profonde.18 Sono questi falsi maestri che tengono discorsi pomposi, ma vuoti di significato e poi, facendo leva sui desideri sessuali più vergognosi e sulla libidine, adescano quelli che da poco sono sfuggiti all’influenza di coloro che vivono nell’errore.19 « Non è con la bontà che sarete salvati », dicono, « perciò potete fare quello che vi pare, siate liberi! »
Ma questi individui che promettono la « libertà » sono essi stessi schiavi del peccato. Perché ognuno è schiavo di ciò che ha influenza su di lui.20 Infatti, dopo essere sfuggiti alle brutture del mondo, perché avevano conosciuto il nostro Signore e Salvatore Gesù Cristo, si sono lasciati di nuovo attanagliare e vincere dal peccato, perciò la loro situazione finisce per essere peggiore della prima.21 Per loro sarebbe stato meglio non aver mai conosciuto Cristo, piuttosto che averlo conosciuto, e poi aver voltato le spalle ai santi comandamenti che avevano ricevuto.22 Si è verificato per loro quello che dice il libro dei proverbi: « Il cane torna al suo vomito» e il maiale appena lavato torna a rotolarsi nel fango.

1 But there arose false prophets also among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers, who shall privily bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.2 And many shall follow their lascivious doings; by reason of whom the way of the truth shall be evil spoken of.3 And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not.4 For if God spared not angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;5 and spared not the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, having made them an example unto those that should live ungodly;7 and delivered righteous Lot, sore distressed by the lascivious life of the wicked8 (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their lawless deeds):9 the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment;10 but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise dominion. Daring, self-willed, they tremble not to rail at dignities:11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, bring not a railing judgment against them before the Lord.12 But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, railing in matters whereof they are ignorant, shall in their destroying surely be destroyed,13 suffering wrong as the hire of wrong-doing; men that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you;14 having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing;15 forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing;16 but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man’s voice and stayed the madness of the prophet.17 These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved.18 For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error;19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage.20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first.21 For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them.22 It has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.
