2 Peter 2

1 Cependant, il y a eu parmi le peuple de prétendus prophètes; de même, il y aura parmi vous de prétendus enseignants. Ils introduiront sournoisement des doctrines qui conduisent à la perdition, allant jusqu'à renier le maître qui les a rachetés, et ils attireront ainsi sur eux une ruine soudaine.2 Beaucoup les suivront dans leur immoralité, et la voie de la vérité sera calomniée à cause d'eux.

3 Dans leur soif de posséder, ils vous exploiteront avec des paroles trompeuses, mais leur condamnation menace depuis longtemps et leur ruine ne tardera pas.
4 En effet, Dieu n'a pas épargné les anges qui ont péché, mais il les a précipités et enchaînés dans l'abîme, là où règnent les ténèbres, pour qu'ils y soient gardés en vue du jugement.5 Il n'a pas épargné non plus l'ancien monde, bien qu'il ait sauvé huit personnes dont Noé, ce prédicateur de la justice, lorsqu'il a fait venir le déluge sur un monde impie.6 Par ailleurs, il a condamné [à la destruction] et réduit en cendres les villes de Sodome et de Gomorrhe pour les donner en exemple à ceux qui par la suite vivraient dans l'impiété,7 et il a délivré Lot le juste, qui était profondément attristé de la conduite immorale de ces hommes débauchés.

8 - Ce juste, qui habitait au milieu d'eux, tourmentait en effet jour après jour son âme juste à cause de ce qu'il voyait et entendait de leurs agissements criminels. -
9 Ainsi donc, le Seigneur sait délivrer de l'épreuve les hommes pieux et garder les injustes pour le jour du jugement où ils seront punis.10 C'est le cas notamment de ceux qui, dans un désir d'impureté, courent après les plaisirs de la chair et méprisent toute autorité. Présomptueux et arrogants, ils ne craignent pas d'insulter les êtres glorieux,11 alors que les anges, pourtant supérieurs en force et en puissance, ne portent pas de jugement insultant contre eux devant le Seigneur.12 Mais eux, pareils à des animaux dépourvus de raison qui sont destinés à être capturés et abattus, ils calomnient ce qu'ils ignorent; ils mourront aussi comme des bêtes13 et recevront alors le salaire de leur injustice, eux qui trouvent leur plaisir à se livrer à la débauche en plein jour. Hommes pervers et souillés, ils se délectent de leurs tromperies quand ils prennent part à vos festins.14 Les yeux pleins d'adultère et jamais rassasiés de péchés, ils prennent au piège les personnes mal affermies; ils ont le cœur entraîné par l'exercice à la soif de posséder, et ce sont des enfants de malédiction.15 Ils ont quitté le droit chemin et se sont égarés en suivant la voie de Balaam, le fils de Béor, qui a aimé recevoir un salaire pour son injustice.

16 Il a cependant été repris pour sa violation des règles: une ânesse muette a fait entendre une voix humaine et s'est opposée à la folie du prophète.
17 Ces gens-là sont des sources sans eau, des nuages poussés par la tempête; l'obscurité des ténèbres leur est réservée [pour l'éternité].18 Avec de grands discours pleins de vide, ils prennent au piège des plaisirs de la chair, de leurs débauches, ceux qui ont en réalité échappé aux hommes vivant dans l'égarement.19 Ils leur promettent la liberté alors qu'ils sont eux-mêmes esclaves de la corruption, puisque chacun est esclave de ce qui l'a dominé.20 En effet si, après avoir échappé aux souillures du monde par la connaissance de notre Seigneur et Sauveur Jésus-Christ, ils se laissent reprendre et dominer par elles, leur dernière condition est pire que la première.21 Il aurait mieux valu pour eux ne pas connaître la voie de la justice plutôt que de la connaître et de se détourner ensuite du saint commandement qui leur avait été donné.

22 Il leur est arrivé ce que disent avec raison les proverbes: Le chien est retourné à ce qu'il avait vomit et: «La truie à peine lavée s'est vautrée dans le bourbier.»

1 But there arose false prophets also among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers, who shall privily bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.2 And many shall follow their lascivious doings; by reason of whom the way of the truth shall be evil spoken of.3 And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not.4 For if God spared not angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;5 and spared not the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;6 and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, having made them an example unto those that should live ungodly;7 and delivered righteous Lot, sore distressed by the lascivious life of the wicked8 (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their lawless deeds):9 the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment;10 but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise dominion. Daring, self-willed, they tremble not to rail at dignities:11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, bring not a railing judgment against them before the Lord.12 But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, railing in matters whereof they are ignorant, shall in their destroying surely be destroyed,13 suffering wrong as the hire of wrong-doing; men that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you;14 having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing;15 forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing;16 but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man’s voice and stayed the madness of the prophet.17 These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved.18 For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error;19 promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage.20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first.21 For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them.22 It has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.
