2 Samuel 24

David hace un censo militar

1 Una vez más, la ira del Señor se encendió contra Israel, así que el Señor incitó a David contra el pueblo al decirle: «Haz un censo de Israel y de Judá.» 2 Entonces el rey les ordenó a Joab y a los capitanes del ejército que lo acompañaban:s
—Vayan por todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Berseba, y hagan un censo militar, para que yo sepa cuántos pueden servir en el ejército. 3 Joab le respondió:
—¡Que el Señor su Dios multiplique cien veces las tropas de Su Majestad, y le permita llegar a verlo con sus propios ojos! Pero, ¿qué lleva a Su Majestad a hacer tal cosa?
4 Sin embargo, la orden del rey prevaleció sobre la opinión de Joab y de los capitanes del ejército, de modo que salieron de su audiencia con el rey para llevar a cabo el censo militar de Israel. 5 Cruzaron el Jordán y acamparon cerca de Aroer, al sur del pueblo que está en el valle, después de lo cual siguieron hacia Gad y Jazer. 6 Fueron por Galaad y por el territorio de Tajtín Jodsí, hasta llegar a Dan Jaán y a los alrededores de Sidón. 7 Siguieron hacia la fortaleza de Tiro y recorrieron todas las ciudades de los heveos y los cananeos. Finalmente, llegaron a Berseba, en el Néguev de Judá.
8 Al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días, y después de haber recorrido todo el país, regresaron a Jerusalén. 9 Joab le entregó al rey los resultados del censo militar: en Israel había ochocientos mil hombres que podían servir en el ejército, y en Judá, quinientos mil.
10 Entonces le remordió a David la conciencia por haber realizado este censo militar, y le dijo al Señor: «He cometido un pecado muy grande. He actuado como un necio. Yo te ruego, Señor, que perdones la maldad de tu siervo.»
11 Por la mañana, antes de que David se levantara, la palabra del Señor vino al profeta Gad, vidente de David, y le dio este mensaje: 12 «Ve a decirle a David: “Así dice el Señor: ‘Te doy a escoger entre estos tres castigos; dime cuál de ellos quieres que te imponga.’ ” » 13 Entonces Gad fue a ver a David y le preguntó:
—¿Qué prefieres: que vengan tress años de hambre en el país, o que tus enemigos te persigan durante tres meses, y tengas que huir de ellos, o que el país sufra tres días de peste? Piénsalo bien, y dime qué debo responderle al que me ha enviado.
14 —¡Estoy entre la espada y la pared! —respondió David—. Pero es mejor que caigamos en las manos del Señor, porque su amor es grande, y no que yo caiga en las manos de los *hombres.
15 Por lo tanto, el Señor mandó contra Israel una peste que duró desde esa mañana hasta el tiempo señalado; y en todo el país, desde Dan hasta Berseba, murieron setenta mil personas. 16 Entonces el ángel del Señor, que estaba junto a la parcela de Arauna el jebuseo, extendió su mano hacia Jerusalén para destruirla. Pero el Señor se arrepintió del castigo que había enviado. «¡Basta! —le dijo al ángel que estaba hiriendo al pueblo—. ¡Detén tu mano!»
17 David, al ver que el ángel destruía a la gente, oró al Señor: «¿Qué culpa tienen estas ovejas? ¡Soy yo el que ha pecado! ¡Soy yo el que ha hecho mal! ¡Descarga tu mano sobre mí y sobre mi familia!»

David construye un altar

18 Ese mismo día, Gad volvió adonde estaba David y le dijo: «Sube y construye un altar al Señor en la parcela de Arauna el jebuseo.»
19 David se puso en camino, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado por medio de Gad. 20 Arauna se asomó y, al ver que el rey y sus oficiales se acercaban, salió y rostro en tierra se postró delante de él.
21 —Su Majestad —dijo Arauna—, ¿a qué debo el honor de su visita?
—Quiero comprarte la parcela —respondió David— y construir un altar al Señor para que se detenga la plaga que está afligiendo al pueblo.
22 —Tome Su Majestad y presente como ofrenda lo que mejor le parezca. Aquí hay bueyes para el *holocausto, y hay también trillos y yuntas que usted puede usar como leña. 23 Todo esto se lo doy a usted. ¡Que el Señor su Dios vea a Su Majestad con agrado!
24 Pero el rey le respondió a Arauna:
—Eso no puede ser. No voy a ofrecer al Señor mi Dios holocaustos que nada me cuesten. Te lo compraré todo por su precio justo.
Fue así como David compró la parcela y los bueyes por cincuenta monedass de plata. 25 Allí construyó un altar al Señor y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de *comunión. Entonces el Señor tuvo piedad del país, y se detuvo la plaga que estaba afligiendo a Israel.

2 Samuel 24

David Displeases the Lord by Taking a Census

1 The Lord’s anger again raged against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go count Israel and Judah.”s

2 The king told Joab, the general in command of his army, “Go through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba and muster the army, so I may know the size of the army.”

3 Joab replied to the king, “May the Lord your God make the army a hundred times larger right before the eyes of my lord the king! But why does my master the king want to do this?”

4 But the king’s edict stood, despite the objections oft Joab and the leaders of the army. So Joab and the leaders of the army left the king’s presence in order to muster the Israelite army.
5 They crossed the Jordan and camped at Aroer, on the south side of the city, att the wadi of Gad, near Jazer.6 Then they went on to Gilead and to the region of Tahtim Hodshi, coming to Dan Jaan and on around to Sidon.s7 Then they went to the fortress of Tyres and all the cities of the Hivites and the Canaanites. Then they went on to the Negev of Judah, to Beer Sheba.

8 They went through all the land and after nine months and twenty days came back to Jerusalem.s

9 Joab reported the number of warriorst to the king. In Israel there were 800,000 sword-wielding warriors, and in Judah there were 500,000 soldiers.

10 David felt guiltyt after he had numbered the army. David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly by doing this! Now, O Lord, please remove the guilt of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
11 When David got up the next morning, the Lord had already spokent to Gad the prophet, David’s seer:

12 “Go, tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three forms of judgment. Pick one of them and I will carry it out against you.’”
13 Gad went to David and told him, “Shall sevens years of famine come upon your land? Or shall you flee for three months from your enemy with him in hot pursuit? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now decidet what I should tell the one who sent me.”

14 David said to Gad, “I am very upset! I prefer that we be attacked by the Lord, for his mercy is great; I do not want to be attacked by men!”t
15 So the Lord sent a plague through Israel from the morning until the completion of the appointed time. Seventy thousand men died from Dan to Beer Sheba.

16 When the angelt extended his hand to destroy Jerusalem, the Lord relented from his judgment.t He told the angel who was killing the people, “That’s enough! Stop now!”t (Now the Lord’s angel was near the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.)

17 When he saw the angel who was destroying the people, David said to the Lord, “Look, it is I who have sinned and done this evil thing! As for these sheep – what have they done? Attack me and my family.”t

David Acquires a Threshing Floor and Constructs an Altar There

18 So Gad went to David that day and told him, “Go up and build an altar for the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

19 So David went up as Gad instructed him to do, according to the Lord’s instructions.
20 When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants approaching him, het went out and bowed to the king with his facet to the ground.21 Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David replied, “To buy from you the threshing floor so I can build an altar for the Lord, so that the plague may be removed from the people.”22 Araunah told David, “My lord the king may take whatever he wishest and offer it. Look! Here are oxen for burnt offerings, and threshing sledgess and harnessest for wood.23 I, the servant of my lords the king, give it all to the king!” Araunah also told the king, “May the Lord your God show you favor!”

24 But the king said to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it from you! I will not offer to the Lord my God burnt sacrifices that cost me nothing.”
So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty pieces of silver.t

25 Then David built an altar for the Lord there and offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings. And the Lord accepted prayers for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel.
