EPISTOLE DI S. PAOLO II A TIMOTEO 1

1 Paolo, apostolo di Cristo Gesù per volontà di Dio, secondo la promessa della vita che è in Cristo Gesù, 2 a Timoteo, mio diletto figliuolo, grazia, misericordia, pace da Dio Padre e da Cristo Gesù nostro Signore. 3 Io rendo grazie a Dio, il quale servo con pura coscienza, come l'han servito i miei antenati, ricordandomi sempre di te nelle mie preghiere giorno e notte, 4 bramando, memore come sono delle tue lacrime, di vederti per esser ricolmo d'allegrezza. 5 Io ricordo infatti la fede non finta che è in te, la quale abitò prima della tua nonna Loide e nella tua madre Eunice, e, son persuaso, abita in te pure. 6 Per questa ragione ti ricordo di ravvivare il dono di Dio che è in te per la imposizione delle mie mani. 7 Poiché Iddio ci ha dato uno spirito non di timidità, ma di forza e d'amore e di correzione. 8 Non aver dunque vergogna della testimonianza del Signor nostro, né di me che sono in catene per lui; ma soffri anche tu per l'Evangelo, sorretto dalla potenza di Dio; 9 il quale ci ha salvati e ci ha rivolto una sua santa chiamata, non secondo le nostre opere, ma secondo il proprio proponimento e la grazia che ci è stata fatta in Cristo Gesù avanti i secoli, 10 ma che è stata ora manifestata coll'apparizione del Salvator nostro Cristo Gesù, il quale ha distrutto la morte e ha prodotto in luce la vita e l'immortalità mediante l'Evangelo, 11 in vista del quale io sono stato costituito banditore ed apostolo e dottore. 12 Ed è pure per questa cagione che soffro queste cose; ma non me ne vergogno, perché so in chi ho creduto, e son persuaso ch'egli è potente da custodire il mio deposito fino a quel giorno. 13 Attienti con fede e con l'amore che è in Cristo Gesù al modello delle sane parole che udisti da me. 14 Custodisci il buon deposito per mezzo dello Spirito Santo che abita in noi. 15 Tu sai questo: che tutti quelli che sono in Asia mi hanno abbandonato; fra i quali, Figello ed Ermogene. 16 Conceda il Signore misericordia alla famiglia d'Onesiforo, poiché egli m'ha spesse volte confortato e non si è vergognato della mia catena; 17 anzi, quando è venuto a Roma, mi ha cercato premurosamente e m'ha trovato. 18 Gli conceda il Signore di trovar misericordia presso il Signore in quel giorno; e quanti servigi egli abbia reso in Efeso tu sai molto bene.

God himself chose me to be an apostle, and he gave me the promised life that Jesus Christ makes possible.

2  t Timothy, you are like a dear child to me. I pray that God our Father and our Lord Christ Jesus will be kind and merciful to you and will bless you with peace!

Do Not Be Ashamed //of the Lord

7 God's Spiritt doesn't make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control.

8 Don't be ashamed to speak for our Lord. And don't be ashamed of me, just because I am in jail for serving him. Use the power that comes from God and join with me in suffering for telling the good news.

9 God saved us and chose us
to be his holy people.
We did nothing
to deserve this,
but God planned it
because he is so kind.
Even before time began
God planned for Christ Jesus
to show kindness to us.

10 Now Christ Jesus has come
to offer us God's gift
of undeserved grace.
Christ our Savior defeated death
and brought us
the good news.
It shines like a light
and offers life
that never ends.
11  t My work is to be a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher.t 12 This is why I am suffering now. But I am not ashamed! I know the one I have faith in, and I am sure he can guard until the last day what he has trusted me with.t 13 Now follow the example of the correct teaching I gave you, and let the faith and love of Christ Jesus be your model.

14 You have been trusted with a wonderful treasure. Guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives within us.

15 You know that everyone in Asia has turned against me, especially Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16 I pray that the Lord will be kind to the family of Onesiphorus. He often cheered me up and wasn't ashamed of me when I was put in jail. 17 Then after he arrived in Rome, he searched everywhere until he found me. 18 I pray that the Lord Jesus will ask God to show mercy to Onesiphorus on the day of judgment. You know how much he helped me in Ephesus.
