Siate forti con la forza di Cristo.

1 Timòteo, figlio mio, attingi forza dalla grazia che è in Gesù Cristo,2 perché devi insegnare agli altri quelle cose che mi hai sentito dire alla presenza di tanti testimoni. Insegna queste grandi verità a uomini fedeli, capaci a loro volta di trasmetterle ad altri.3 Sopporta anche tu le sofferenze come un buon soldato di Gesù Cristo.4 E, come soldato di Cristo, non impicciarti degli affari del mondo, altrimenti non potrai soddisfare chi ti ha arruolato nel suo esercito.5 Per fare il lavoro del Signore segui le sue regole, proprio come un atleta si attiene a certe regole, altrimenti viene squalificato e non vince nessun premio.6 Lavora sodo, come un contadino infaticabile, che deve essere il primo ad avere la sua parte del raccolto.7 Rifletti su questi tre esempi; il Signore ti aiuterà a capire.8 Non dimenticarti mai del fatto straordinario che Gesù Cristo fu uomo, discendente del re Davide e, resuscitando dai morti, dimostrò di essere Dio.9 È stato perché ho predicato queste grandi verità che adesso sono nei guai, rinchiuso in prigione come un delinquente. Ma, incatenando me, non possono incatenare la Parola di Dio!10 Perciò sono più che pronto a soffrire, se ciò servirà a portare la salvezza e la gloria eterna che sono in Gesù Cristo a quelli che Dio ha prescelto.11 Questa verità mi consola: se moriamo con Cristo vuol dire che vivremo con lui.12 Se portiamo pazienza nelle difficoltà, un giorno regneremo con lui. Ma se rinunciamo davanti alle sofferenze e rinneghiamo Cristo, allora anche lui rinnegherà noi.13 Se noi siamo senza fede, egli però rimane fedele, perché non può rinnegare se stesso.

Evita le discussioni inutili.

14 Ricorda queste cose ai credenti, scongiurandoli, nel nome del Signore, di non sollevare discussioni sulle parole; sono cose che non servono a niente, se non a confondere chi ascolta.15 Datti da fare in modo che il Signore possa dirti: « Bravo! » Cerca di essere un buon lavoratore che tiene alta la verità e non dovrà vergognarsi di niente, quando Dio controllerà il suo lavoro.16 Evita i discorsi frivoli e mondani, e ricordati che quelli che li fanno progrediscono sempre più sulla strada del peccato e insegnano falsità che si diffondono come la cancrena in una ferita.17 Fra questi ci sono Imenèo e Filèto.18 Essi si sono sviati dalla verità, predicando la menzogna che la resurrezione dei morti è già avvenuta e, così facendo, hanno indebolito la fede di alcuni che credono in loro.19 Ma la verità di Dio rimane solida come una roccia che niente può smuovere, un fondamento su cui sono scritte queste parole: « Il Signore conosce quelli che sono davvero suoi » e « Chiunque dice di essere cristiano non deve fare cose sbagliate ».20 In una casa grande non ci sono soltanto vasi d’oro e d’argento, ce ne sono anche di legno e di terracotta. I primi si riservano per le occasioni speciali, gli altri servono in cucina o per gli usi più umili.21 Se restate lontani dai peccati di cui vi ho parlato, sarete come quei vasi d’oro purissimo, i migliori della casa, che Cristo stesso può usare per fare opere buone.22 Evita tutto ciò che ti porta ai cattivi desideri, tipici dei giovani, resta aggrappato, invece, a tutto ciò che ti spinge a desiderare di comportarti nel modo giusto. Impegnati a conservare la fede, l’amore e la pace, non stancarti di frequentare quelli che amano il Signore ed hanno il cuore puro.23 Te lo ripeto, non farti coinvolgere in discussioni sciocche e inutili, che provocano soltanto litigi.24-25 Chi ha scelto di servire il Signore non deve essere litigioso, ma gentile e paziente con tutti, e deve essere capace di insegnare agli altri. Deve saper sopportare i torti ed essere dolce ed umile, quando cerca di insegnare a quelli che si oppongono. Se un credente parlerà loro con dolcezza e cortesia sarà più facile, con l’aiuto di Dio, che essi riconoscano i propri errori e giungano alla verità.26 Allora, tornati in sé, si libereranno dalla trappola del peccato di Satana, che li aveva presi prigionieri per farli ubbidire alla sua volontà.

1 Thou therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.2 And the things which thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.3 Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.4 No soldier on service entangleth himself in the affairs of this life; that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.5 And if also a man contend in the games, he is not crowned, except he have contended lawfully.6 The husbandmen that laboreth must be the first to partake of the fruits.7 Consider what I say; for the Lord shall give thee understanding in all things.8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel:9 wherein I suffer hardship unto bonds, as a malefactor; but the word of God is not bound.10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sake, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.11 Faithful is the saying: For if we died with him, we shall also live with him:12 if we endure, we shall also reign with him: if we shall deny him, he also will deny us:13 if we are faithless, he abideth faithful; for he cannot deny himself.14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they strive not about words, to no profit, to the subverting of them that hear.15 Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.16 But shun profane babblings: for they will proceed further in ungodliness,17 and their word will eat as doth a gangrene: of whom is Hymenaeus an Philetus;18 men who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already, and overthrow the faith of some.19 Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.20 Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some unto honor, and some unto dishonor.21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, meet for the master’s use, prepared unto every good work.22 after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.23 But foolish and ignorant questionings refuse, knowing that they gender strifes.24 And the Lord’s servant must not strive, but be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing,25 in meekness correcting them that oppose themselves; if peradventure God may give them repentance unto the knowledge of the truth,26 and they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him unto his will.
