ヨハネの第三の手紙 1
一
1 長老ヨハネから、愛するガイオへ。
2 ガイオよ。 私は、あなたがすべての点で栄え、たましいも体も健全であるように、と祈っています。 3 旅行の途中で、こちらに立ち寄ったクリスチャンが、あなたのうれしい消息を聞かせてくれたので、とても喜んでいます。 彼らは、あなたが、いつもきよく、真実にあふれ、神様の良い知らせにふさわしく生活している、と報告してくれました。 4 私の子供たちのことで、こんな知らせを聞くことほど、大きな喜びはありません。
5 ガイオよ。 あなたは、旅行中の教師や伝道者を、もてなしてくれているそうですね。 さぞかし、神様はお喜びでしょう。 6 世話になった人たちが、こちらの教会に立ち寄って、あなたの友情と愛にあふれたもてなしについて、話してくれました。 あなたが物惜しみせず、心からもてなし、彼らを次の旅へ送り出してくれることは、私にとっても、たいへんうれしいことです。 7 それは主のための旅行であり、信者でない人々に、ひたすらこの良い知らせを伝えているのです。 そのために必要な食物も衣服も、泊まる所もお金も、信者でない人々から受け取るわけにはいきません。 8 ですから、私たちが協力して、そのめんどうを見るべきです。 そうすれば、いっしょに主の働きに参加していることになりますから。
9 この件について、私は教会あてに短い手紙を送っておきました。 ところが、自分を指導者として売り込もうとねらっている、高慢なデオテレペスが、私の権威を認めず、私の忠告を聞き入れようとしないのです。 10 今度そちらに行ったら、彼の行ないを指摘するつもりです。 そうすれば、彼がどんなにひどいことばで私を中傷しているか、わかるでしょう。 彼は、自分が、旅行中の伝道者を歓迎しないばかりか、ほかの人をも抱き込んで、そうさせないのです。 そして言うことを聞かない人々を、教会から追い出そうとしています。
11 ガイオよ。 デオテレペスのような悪い手本に影響されず、ひたすら、良い行ないをするよう心がけなさい。 正しいことを行なう人は、神様の子供であることを、自ら証明しており、いつも悪の道を歩む者は、神様から遠く離れていることを、自ら証明しているのです。 12 しかしデメテリオは、だれにも評判のよい人です。 真理そのものから高く評価されているのです。 私も彼を高く買っています。 私のことばに、うそはないことを、よくご存じのはずです。
13 言いたいことは山ほどありますが、今回は、これだけにします。 14 まもなくそちらで、あなたに会い、思う存分語り合うつもりですから。 15 では、ひとまず筆を置きます。 こちらの友人たちから、よろしくとのことです。 ご一同に、くれぐれもよろしくお伝えください。

3 John 1
1 The elder unto Gaius the beloved, whom I love in truth.2 Beloved, I pray that in all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.3 For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth.4 Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.5 Beloved, thou doest a faithful work in whatsoever thou doest toward them that are brethren and strangers withal;6 who bare witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well to set forward on their journey worthily of God:7 because that for the sake of the Name they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.8 We therefore ought to welcome such, that we may be fellow-workers for the truth.9 I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.10 Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth and casteth them out of the church.11 Beloved, imitate not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: he that doeth evil hath not seen God.12 Demetrius hath the witness of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, we also bear witness: and thou knowest that our witness is true.13 I had many things to write unto thee, but I am unwilling to write them to thee with ink and pen:14 but I hope shortly to see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be unto thee. The friends salute thee. Salute the friends by name.
