1 Teofilus, in my eerste boek het ek jou vertel van alles wat Jesus gedoen het tot op die dag dat Hy van sy apostels afskeid geneem en na sy hemelse woning teruggegaan het. Dit was kort nadat Hy sy laaste opdragte aan hulle gegee het.
2 Nadat Jesus uit die dood opgestaan het, het Hy oor 'n tyd van 40 dae 'n hele paar keer aan sy apostels verskyn om vir hulle te wys dat Hy regtig lewe.3 Hy het gereeld met hulle oor God se nuwe wêreld gepraat.
4 Eenkeer toe hulle almal so saam was, het Jesus vir hulle gesê: "Moenie uit Jerusalem weggaan nie. Bly daar totdat my Vader die belofte wat Hy aan julle gemaak het, waar laat word.5 Vroeër het Ek vir julle gesê dat Johannes die Doper julle met water doop, maar dat God julle binnekort met die Heilige Gees gaan doop. Dit is hierdie belofte waarop julle nog so 'n klein rukkie moet wag."
6 'n Ander keer het een van die apostels vir Jesus gevra: "Here, sê asseblief vir ons, gaan U Israel nou weer tot sy vorige glorie herstel, soos in die dae toe ons nog ons eie koning gehad het?"
7 Daarop het Jesus geantwoord: "Dit is vir God om oor hierdie dinge te besluit, nie vir julle nie.
"Al wat julle hoef te weet, is dat God met sy groot krag in julle lewe sal werk wanneer die Heilige Gees na julle toe kom.8 Dan gaan julle oral oor My praat: hier in Jerusalem, maar ook in die hele Judea en Samaria. Ja, selfs tot aan die verste uithoeke van die wêreld."
9 Na hierdie woorde het Jesus van die Olyfberg af na die hemel teruggekeer.10 Terwyl die dissipels nog staan en kyk hoe Hy in die wolke verdwyn, het twee mans uit die hemel by hulle kom staan. Hulle het spierwit klere aangehad.11 Een van die mans vra toe vir die dissipels: "Hoekom staan julle so na die hemel en kyk? Dink julle dat julle nooit weer vir Jesus gaan sien nie? Hierdie selfde Jesus wat nou voor julle oë na sy hemelse woonplek toe vertrek het, sal op presies dieselfde manier na julle toe terugkom."
12  Die Olyfberg waar Jesus van sy dissipels afskeid geneem het, is sowat 'n kilometer van Jerusalem af.13 Daarvandaan het die apostels toe teruggestap stad toe, na 'n groot kamer op die boonste verdieping van een van die geboue. Daar het hulle gereeld bymekaargekom. Al die oorblywende apostels was daar: Petrus, Johannes, Jakobus en Andreas, Filippus en Tomas, Bartolomeus en Matteus, Jakobus die seun van Alfeus, Simon wat 'n Seloot was, en ook Judas die seun van Jakobus.
14 Hulle het elke dag saamgebid. Van die gelowige vroue het saam met hulle kom bid, so ook Maria, Jesus se ma, sy broers en 'n klompie ander gelowiges. Later was daar by die 120 mense in die kamer bymekaar.
15  Op 'n dag het Petrus vir hulle gesê:16 "Broers en susters, ek wil eers met julle oor daardie verraaier van 'n Judas praat. Ek kan nou nog nie glo dat hy kop in een mus was met die spul wat vir Jesus gevang het nie. Ja, hy het dit alles beplan.
17 "Om te dink dat Judas heeltyd een van ons was!18 Met die omkoopgeld wat hy gekry het om Jesus te verraai, het hy vir hom 'n stuk grond gaan koop. Maar hy is 'n paar dae gelede daar dood.19 Hy het hom doodgeval. Sy binneste het oopgebars van die val sodat hy hom doodgebloei het. Dalk het julle ook daarvan te hore gekom. Judas se dood is immers hoofnuus hier in Jerusalem se strate. Die mense noem daardie stuk grond van hom nou Bloedgrond, of soos hulle in Hebreeus sê: Akeldama.
20 "In een van die psalms van Dawid staan daar: Laat sy grond leeg staan sodat niemand daar gaan bly nie.
"Dawid het ook gesê: Iemand anders moet sy werk oorneem.
"Judas se plek in ons kring van apostels is nou leeg. Ons moet iemand in sy plek kies.21 Maar dit moet iemand wees wat heeltyd saam met ons in Jesus se geselskap was,22 van daardie dag af toe Hy deur Johannes die Doper gedoop is totdat Hy hemel toe is."
23 Twee name is toe opgegee: Josef Barsabbas (sy bynaam was Justus) en Mattias.24 Toe het al die gelowiges gebid en gesê: "Here, U weet presies wat in mense se binneste aangaan. U ken ons almal deur en deur.25 Wie van hierdie twee mans wil U hê moet Judas se plek as apostel oorneem? Judas is hierdie wonderlike werk kwyt omdat hy nie na U geluister het nie."
26 Daarna het hulle lootjies getrek. Mattias is as die nuwe apostel gekies.

Acts 1

Jesus Ascends to Heaven

1 I wrotet the formert account,ts Theophilus,t about all that Jesus began to do and teach2 until the day he was taken up to heaven,t after he had given orderst byt the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.3 To the same apostlest also, after his suffering,s he presented himself alive with many convincing proofs. He was seen by them over a forty-day periodt and spoke about matters concerning the kingdom of God.4 While he was with them,t he declared,t “Do not leave Jerusalem,s but wait theret for what myt Father promised,t which you heard about from me.t

5 Fort John baptized with water, but yout will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6 So when they had gathered together, they began to ask him,t “Lord, is this the time when you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”7 He told them, “You are not permitted to knowt the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest partst of the earth.”9 Aftert he had said this, while they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud hid him from their sight.10 Ast they were still staring into the sky while he was going, suddenlyt two men in white clothing stood near them

11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand heret looking up into the sky? This same Jesus who has been taken up from you into heavenst will come back in the same way you saw him go into heaven.”

A Replacement for Judas is Chosen

12 Then they returned to Jerusalems from the mountaint called the Mount of Olivess (which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journeys away).13 Whent they had entered Jerusalem,t they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Peters and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James were there.t14 All these continued together in prayer with one mind, together with the women, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.s15 In those dayst Peter stood up among the believerst (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty people) and said,16 “Brothers,t the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold throught David concerning Judas – who became the guide for those who arrested Jesus –17 for he was counted as one of us and received a share in this ministry.”t18 (Now this man Judast acquired a field with the reward of his unjust deed,t and falling headfirstt he burst open in the middle and all his intestinest gushed out.19 Thist became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so that in their own languages they called that fieldtHakeldama, that is, “Field of Blood.”)20 “For it is written in the book of Psalms, ‘Let his house become deserted,tand let there be no one to live in it,’s and ‘Let another take his position of responsibility.’ts21 Thus one of the ment who have accompanied us during all the time the Lord Jesus associated witht us,22 beginning from his baptism by John until the day het was taken up from us – one of these must become a witness of his resurrection together with us.”23 So theys proposed two candidates:t Joseph called Barsabbas (also called Justus) and Matthias.24 Then they prayed,t “Lord, you know the hearts of all. Show us which one of these two you have chosen25 to assume the taskt of this servicet and apostleship from which Judas turned asidet to go to his own place.”s

26 Thent they cast lots for them, and the one chosen was Matthias;t so he was counted with the eleven apostles.t
