1 Caro Teofilo,[h]
nella mia prima lettera ti ho raccontato tutto ciò che Gesù ha fatto e insegnato2 fino a quando non ritornò in cielo, dopo aver dato, per mezzo dello Spirito Santo, i suoi insegnamenti agli apostoli che aveva scelto.3 Durante i quaranta giorni dopo la crocifissione, Gesù apparve agli apostoli diverse volte, vivo e vegeto, e diede loro molte prove della sua resurrezione. In queste occasioni, parlava con loro delle cose che riguardavano il Regno di Dio.

Gesù sale in cielo.

4 Durante uno di questi incontri, mentre stava a tavola con loro, Gesù ordinò agli apostoli di non allontanarsi da Gerusalemme, ma di aspettare che lo Spirito Santo scendesse su di loro e s’adempisse così la promessa di Dio Padre, di cui lui stesso aveva parlato.5 « Giovanni battezzava con acqua », ricordò loro Gesù, « voi, invece, fra pochi giorni, sarete battezzati con lo Spirito Santo! »6 Allora quelli che si erano riuniti attorno a lui gli chiesero: « Signore, è in questo periodo che libererai Israele (da Roma) e ne farai una nazione indipendente? »7 « È il Padre che stabilisce i tempi giusti », rispose Gesù, « Non spetta a voi conoscerli.8 Ma quando lo Spirito Santo sarà disceso su di voi, riceverete una potenza tale, che parlerete di me con straordinaria efficacia a tutta la gente di Gerusalemme, della Giudea, della Samaria, fino ai confini della terra! »9 Non molto tempo dopo, alla presenza degli apostoli, Gesù cominciò a salire verso il cielo e, mentre lo guardavano, scomparve in una nuvola.10 Stavano ancora così, con gli occhi fissi al cielo, quand’ecco apparire due uomini vestiti di bianco.11 « Uomini di Galilea », dissero, « perché ve ne state lì a guardare in alto? Questo Gesù, che è stato assunto in cielo, un giorno tornerà nello stesso modo in cui l’avete visto partire ».12 Quando accadde questo fatto, erano sul Monte degli Ulivi, così gli apostoli se ne tornarono a piedi a Gerusalemme, che dista poco meno di un chilometro.13 Giunti alla casa dove di solito si riunivano, salirono in una stanza al piano di sopra.14 Quel giorno erano presenti: Pietro, Giovanni, Giacomo, Andrea, Filippo, Tommaso, Bartolomeo, Giacomo il figlio di Alfeo, Simone soprannominato lo Zelota,[i] Giuda figlio di Giacomo e i fratelli di Gesù. C’erano anche alcune donne fra cui Maria, la madre di Gesù.15 Questo incontro di preghiera continuò per alcuni giorni. Una volta, in cui erano presenti circa 120 persone, Pietro si alzò in piedi e disse:16 « Fratelli, era necessario che le Scritture divenissero verità per ciò che fu predetto tanto tempo fa dallo Spirito Santo per bocca del re Davide, riguardo a Giuda, il quale tradì Gesù guidando la folla che lo arrestò.17 Giuda era uno dei nostri, scelto per essere un apostolo proprio come noi lo siamo.18 Egli comprò un campo con i soldi che ricevette per il suo tradimento e là, gettandosi in avanti, si squarciò il ventre e si sparsero fuori le sue viscere.19 La notizia della sua morte si diffuse rapidamente tra il popolo di Gerusalemme che chiamò quel luogo “il campo del sangue”.20 Secondo la predizione del re Davide, che appare nel libro dei Salmi, leggiamo “Che la sua casa diventi deserta e non ci abiti più nessuno”. E inoltre: “Il suo incarico lo prenda un altro”.21-22 È necessario, quindi, scegliere qualcun altro che prenda il posto di Giuda e si unisca a noi, per testimoniare della resurrezione del Signore Gesù. Dobbiamo scegliere qualcuno che sia sempre stato con noi per tutto il tempo che siamo rimasti col Signore, da quando fu battezzato da Giovanni, fino al giorno in cui ci lasciò e fu assunto in cielo ».23 Furono presentati allora due discepoli: Giuseppe, « il Giusto », detto anche Barsabba, e un certo Mattia.24-25 Poi pregarono tutti, perché fosse scelto l’uomo giusto. « O Signore », dissero, « tu che conosci il cuore di tutti, facci sapere quale di questi due uomini tu hai scelto come apostolo per sostituire Giuda il traditore, che è finito nel luogo che gli apparteneva ».26 Tirarono a sorte, e la sorte cadde su Mattia che fu aggregato agli altri undici apostoli.

1 The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,2 until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:3 To whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:4 and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me:5 For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.6 They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority.8 But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.10 And while they were looking stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;11 who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey off.13 And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.14 These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.15 And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said (and there was a multitude of persons gathered together, about a hundred and twenty),16 Brethren, it was needful that the Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.17 For he was numbered among us, and received his portion in this ministry.18 (Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.19 And it became known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akeldama, that is, The field of blood.)20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be made desolate, And let no man dwell therein: and, His office let another take.

21 Of the men therefore that have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,22 beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection.23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen,25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
