Jesús anuncia la venida del Espíritu Santo

1 Muy distinguido amigo Teófilo:
En mi primer libro t t le escribí a usted acerca de todo lo que Jesús hizo y enseñó, desde el principio

2-4 hasta el día en que subió al cielo.
Jesús murió en una cruz, pero resucitó y luego se apareció a los apóstoles que había elegido. Durante cuarenta días les demostró que realmente estaba vivo, y siguió hablándoles del reino de Dios.
Un día en que estaban todos juntos, Jesús, con el poder del Espíritu Santo, les ordenó: «No salgan de Jerusalén. Esperen aquí, hasta que Dios mi Padre cumpla su promesa, de la cual yo les hablé.

5 Juan bautizaba con agua, pero dentro de poco tiempo Dios los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo.»

6 Cierto día en que estaban reunidos los apóstoles, le preguntaron a Jesús:

—Señor, ¿no crees que éste es un buen momento para que les des a los israelitas su propio rey? t

7 Jesús les respondió:

—Sólo Dios decide cuándo llevar a cabo lo que piensa hacer.

8 Pero quiero que sepan que el Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ustedes, y que recibirán poder para hablar de mí en Jerusalén, en todo el territorio de Judea y de Samaria, y también en los lugares más lejanos del mundo.

Jesús sube al cielo

9 Después de esto, los apóstoles vieron cómo Jesús era llevado al cielo, hasta que una nube lo cubrió y ya no volvieron a verlo.10 Mientras tanto, dos hombres se aparecieron junto a los apóstoles. Estaban vestidos con ropas muy blancas, pero los apóstoles no los vieron porque estaban mirando al cielo.

11 Entonces aquellos dos les dijeron: «Hombres de Galilea, ¿qué hacen ahí, mirando al cielo? Acaban de ver que Jesús fue llevado al cielo, pero así como se ha ido, un día volverá.»

Matías ocupa el lugar de Judas

12-13 Los apóstoles que vieron a Jesús subir al cielo eran Pedro, Juan, Santiago, Andrés, Felipe, Tomás, Bartolomé, Mateo, Santiago el hijo de Alfeo, Simón el Celote y Judas el hijo de Santiago. Todos ellos se alejaron del Monte de los Olivos y caminaron como un kilómetro, hasta llegar de nuevo a Jerusalén. Cuando llegaron a la casa donde se estaban quedando, subieron a su cuarto.

14-15 Estos seguidores de Jesús eran un grupo muy unido, y siempre oraban juntos. Con ellos se reunían los hermanos de Jesús y algunas mujeres, entre las que se encontraba María, la madre de Jesús. Todos los de este grupo eran como ciento veinte personas. Un día en que todos ellos estaban juntos, Pedro se levantó de pronto y les dijo:

16 «Queridos amigos, todos sabemos que a Jesús lo arrestaron porque Judas llevó a los enemigos de Jesús hasta donde él estaba. Eso ya lo había anunciado el Espíritu Santo por medio de David. Así lo dice la Biblia, y así sucedió.
17 »No hay que olvidar que Judas era uno de los nuestros, y que trabajaba con nosotros.18 Cuando traicionó a Jesús, con el dinero que le dieron fue y compró un terreno. Pero luego se cayó de cabeza y se estrelló contra el suelo.19 Todos en Jerusalén lo supieron y, desde entonces, ese lugar se conoce como “Campo de sangre”.

20 Ahora tiene que cumplirse lo que se dice en el libro de los Salmos:

“¡Que su casa se quede vacía!
¡Que nadie viva en ella!
¡Que otro haga su trabajo!”

21-22 »Por eso, otro tiene que ocupar el lugar de Judas, para que junto con nosotros anuncie a todo el mundo que Jesús resucitó. Tiene que ser alguien que, desde el principio, haya andado con Jesús y con nosotros; alguien que lo haya conocido desde que Juan lo bautizó hasta el día en que subió al cielo.»

23 Los candidatos presentados para ocupar el puesto de Judas fueron dos. Uno de ellos se llamaba José Barsabás, más conocido como «el Justo», y el otro se llamaba Matías.

24 Luego todos oraron:

«Señor, tú sabes lo que nosotros pensamos y sentimos. Por eso, te rogamos que nos muestres cuál de estos dos

25 debe hacer el trabajo que a Judas le correspondía.»

26 Después de eso se hizo un sorteo, y Matías resultó elegido. Desde ese día, Matías se agregó al grupo de los apóstoles.

Acts 1

1 The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,2 until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:3 To whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:4 and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me:5 For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.6 They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority.8 But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.10 And while they were looking stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;11 who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey off.13 And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.14 These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.15 And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said (and there was a multitude of persons gathered together, about a hundred and twenty),16 Brethren, it was needful that the Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.17 For he was numbered among us, and received his portion in this ministry.18 (Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.19 And it became known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akeldama, that is, The field of blood.)20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be made desolate, And let no man dwell therein: and, His office let another take.

21 Of the men therefore that have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,22 beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection.23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen,25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
