1 معزز تھیُفِلُس، پہلی کتاب میں مَیں نے سب کچھ بیان کیا جو عیسیٰ نے شروع سے لے کر2 اُس دن تک کیا اور سکھایا، جب اُسے آسمان پر اُٹھایا گیا۔ جانے سے پہلے اُس نے اپنے چنے ہوئے رسولوں کو روح القدس کی معرفت مزید ہدایات دیں۔3 اپنے دُکھ اُٹھانے اور موت سہنے کے بعد اُس نے اپنے آپ کو ظاہر کر کے اُنہیں بہت سی دلیلوں سے قائل کیا کہ وہ واقعی زندہ ہے۔ وہ چالیس دن کے دوران اُن پر ظاہر ہوتا اور اُنہیں اللہ کی بادشاہی کے بارے میں بتاتا رہا۔4 جب وہ ابھی اُن کے ساتھ تھا اُس نے اُنہیں حکم دیا، ”یروشلم کو نہ چھوڑنا بلکہ اِس انتظار میں یہیں ٹھہرو کہ باپ کا وعدہ پورا ہو جائے، وہ وعدہ جس کے بارے میں مَیں نے تم کو آگاہ کیا ہے۔5 کیونکہ یحییٰ نے تو پانی سے بپتسمہ دیا، لیکن تم کو تھوڑے دنوں کے بعد روح القدس سے بپتسمہ دیا جائے گا۔“6 جو وہاں جمع تھے اُنہوں نے اُس سے پوچھا، ”خداوند، کیا آپ اِسی وقت اسرائیل کے لئے اُس کی بادشاہی دوبارہ قائم کریں گے؟“7 عیسیٰ نے جواب دیا، ”یہ جاننا تمہارا کام نہیں ہے بلکہ صرف باپ کا جو ایسے اوقات اور تاریخیں مقرر کرنے کا اختیار رکھتا ہے۔8 لیکن تمہیں روح القدس کی قوت ملے گی جو تم پر نازل ہو گا۔ پھر تم یروشلم، پورے یہودیہ اور سامریہ بلکہ دنیا کی انتہا تک میرے گواہ ہو گے۔“9 یہ کہہ کر وہ اُن کے دیکھتے دیکھتے اُٹھا لیا گیا۔ اور ایک بادل نے اُسے اُن کی نظروں سے اوجھل کر دیا۔10 وہ ابھی آسمان کی طرف دیکھ ہی رہے تھے کہ اچانک دو آدمی اُن کے پاس آ کھڑے ہوئے۔ دونوں سفید لباس پہنے ہوئے تھے۔11 اُنہوں نے کہا، "گلیل کے مردو، آپ کیوں کھڑے آسمان کی طرف دیکھ رہے ہیں؟ یہی عیسیٰ جسے آپ کے پاس سے آسمان پر اُٹھایا گیا ہے اُسی طرح واپس آئے گا جس طرح آپ نے اُسے اوپر جاتے ہوئے دیکھا ہے۔“12 پھر وہ زیتون کے پہاڑ سے یروشلم شہر واپس چلے گئے۔ (یہ پہاڑ شہر سے تقریباً ایک کلو میٹر دُور ہے۔)13 وہاں پہنچ کر وہ اُس بالاخانے میں داخل ہوئے جس میں وہ ٹھہرے ہوئے تھے، یعنی پطرس، یوحنا، یعقوب اور اندریاس، فلپّس اور توما، برتلمائی اور متی، یعقوب بن حلفئی، شمعون مجاہد اور یہوداہ بن یعقوب۔14 یہ سب یک دل ہو کر دعا میں لگے رہے۔ کچھ عورتیں، عیسیٰ کی ماں مریم اور اُس کے بھائی بھی ساتھ تھے۔15 اُن دنوں میں پطرس بھائیوں میں کھڑا ہوا۔ اُس وقت تقریباً 120 لوگ جمع تھے۔ اُس نے کہا،16 ”بھائیو، لازم تھا کہ کلامِ مُقدّس کی وہ پیش گوئی پوری ہو جو روح القدس نے داؤد کی معرفت یہوداہ کے بارے میں کی۔ یہوداہ اُن کا راہنما بن گیا جنہوں نے عیسیٰ کو گرفتار کیا،17 گو اُسے ہم میں شمار کیا جاتا تھا اور وہ اِسی خدمت میں ہمارے ساتھ شریک تھا۔“18 (جو پیسے یہوداہ کو اُس کے غلط کام کے لئے مل گئے تھے اُن سے اُس نے ایک کھیت خرید لیا تھا۔ وہاں وہ سر کے بل گر گیا، اُس کا پیٹ پھٹ گیا اور اُس کی تمام انتڑیاں باہر نکل پڑیں۔19 اِس کا چرچا یروشلم کے تمام باشندوں میں پھیل گیا، اِس لئے یہ کھیت اُن کی مادری زبان میں ہقل دَما کے نام سے مشہور ہوا جس کا مطلب ہے خون کا کھیت۔)20 پطرس نے اپنی بات جاری رکھی، ”یہی بات زبور کی کتاب میں لکھی ہے، ’اُس کی رہائش گاہ سنسان ہو جائے، کوئی اُس میں آباد نہ ہو۔‘ یہ بھی لکھا ہے، ’کوئی اَور اُس کی ذمہ داری اُٹھائے۔‘21 چنانچہ اب ضروری ہے کہ ہم یہوداہ کی جگہ کسی اَور کو چن لیں۔ یہ شخص اُن مردوں میں سے ایک ہو جو اُس پورے وقت کے دوران ہمارے ساتھ سفر کرتے رہے جب خداوند عیسیٰ ہمارے ساتھ تھا،22 یعنی اُس کے یحییٰ کے ہاتھ سے بپتسمہ لینے سے لے کر اُس وقت تک جب اُسے ہمارے پاس سے اُٹھایا گیا۔ لازم ہے کہ اُن میں سے ایک ہمارے ساتھ عیسیٰ کے جی اُٹھنے کا گواہ ہو۔“23 چنانچہ اُنہوں نے دو آدمی پیش کئے، یوسف جو برسبا کہلاتا تھا (اُس کا دوسرا نام یوستس تھا) اور متیاہ۔24 پھر اُنہوں نے دعا کی، ”اے خداوند، تُو ہر ایک کے دل سے واقف ہے۔ ہم پر ظاہر کر کہ تُو نے اِن دونوں میں سے کس کو چنا ہے25 تاکہ وہ اُس خدمت کی ذمہ داری اُٹھائے جو یہوداہ چھوڑ کر وہاں چلا گیا جہاں اُسے جانا ہی تھا۔“26 یہ کہہ کر اُنہوں نے دونوں کا نام لے کر قرعہ ڈالا تو متیاہ کا نام نکلا۔ لہٰذا اُسے بھی گیارہ رسولوں میں شامل کر لیا گیا۔

Acts 1

1 The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,2 until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:3 To whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:4 and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me:5 For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.6 They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority.8 But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.10 And while they were looking stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;11 who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey off.13 And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.14 These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.15 And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said (and there was a multitude of persons gathered together, about a hundred and twenty),16 Brethren, it was needful that the Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.17 For he was numbered among us, and received his portion in this ministry.18 (Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.19 And it became known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akeldama, that is, The field of blood.)20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be made desolate, And let no man dwell therein: and, His office let another take.

21 Of the men therefore that have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,22 beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection.23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen,25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
