一○

1 カイザリヤに、コルネリオという、ローマ軍の士官がいました。　イタリヤ連隊に所属する隊長の一人でした。　2 この人はたいそう信仰があつく、一家そろって神を信じていました。　また、困っている人には惜しみなく施し、実によく祈る人でもありました。　3 ある日の午後、彼は幻を見ました。　午後三時ごろのことで、意識ははっきりしていました。　幻の中で、御使いが現われ、彼のところへ来て、「コルネリオよ」と呼びかけるではありませんか。
4 じっと御使いを見つめていると、なんだか恐ろしくなりました。　「どんなご用でしょうか。」
「あなたの祈りも、良い行ないも、神様はすべてご存じです。　5-6 さあ、ヨッパに使いをやって、シモン・ペテロという人を捜させなさい。　海岸沿いの皮なめし職人シモンの家にいます。　彼に、ここへ来てくれるように頼みなさい。」
7 御使いが姿を消すとすぐ、コルネリオは使用人二人と、神を敬う側近の兵士一人とを呼び寄せました。　8 そして、このいきさつを話し、ヨッパへやりました。
9-11 翌日、三人がヨッパの町に近づいたころ、ペテロは祈るために屋上に上がりました。　正午ごろのことで、お腹がすき、食事をしたくなりました。　ところが、昼食の用意がなされている間に、とろとろ夢ごこちになったのです。　ふと見ると、天が開け、四すみをつった大きな布のようなものが降りて来ます。　12 中には、ユダヤ人は食べることが禁じられていた蛇や鳥など、あらゆる種類の動物が入っています。
13 そして、「さあ、どれでも好きなものを料理して食べなさい」という声が聞こえました。
14 「主よ、とんでもありません。　生まれてこのかた、口にしたこともないものばかりです。　ユダヤのおきてで禁じられているのですから。」
15 「ペテロよ、神様に口答えするのか。　神様が、『きよい食べ物だ』と言われたものは、きよいのだ。」
16 同じことが三度あってから、布はすうっと天に引き上げられました。
17 ペテロは、この幻はどういう意味なのだろうと、すっかり考え込んでしまいました。　ちょうどその時です。　コルネリオから遣わされた人たちがシモンの家を捜し当て、門口に立ち、　18 「こちらにシモン・ペテロという方が泊まっておいででしょうか」と尋ねました。
19 一方、ペテロは、今しがたの不思議な幻のことをあれこれ考えあぐねていると、聖霊がこうおっしゃいました。　「三人の人が、あなたに会いに来ました。　20 さあ降りて、その人たちに会い、いっしょに出かけなさい。　心配はいりません。　わたしが、その人たちをよこしたのだから。」
21 そこでペテロは下へ降り、「お尋ねのペテロは、私です。　どんなご用でしょうか」と尋ねました。
22 すると三人は、ローマ軍の士官コルネリオが、たいそう信心深い人で、ユダヤ人みんなから好意を持たれていることや、そのコルネリオのもとに現われた御使いが、ペテロを招いて神のことばを聞くように指示なさったいきさつなどを話しました。
ペテロ、コルネリオを訪問
23 ペテロは三人を家に招き入れて一晩泊め、翌日いっしょに出かけました。　ヨッパの信者も数人、同行しました。
24 一行がカイザリヤに到着したのは、次の日でした。　コルネリオは、親類の者や親しい友人たちを呼び集め、一行を、今や遅しと待ち受けていました。　25 そして、ペテロが家に入ると、その前にひれ伏して礼拝したのです。
26 ペテロはそれを押しとどめました。　「お立ちなさい。　私は神様じゃありませんよ。」
27 コルネリオは立ち上がり、しばらく二人で話し合ってから、人々の待つ部屋へ入りました。
28 ペテロは一同に言いました。　「このようにして外国人の家に入ることが、ユダヤのおきてで禁じられていることは、よくご存じでしょう。　ところが神様は私に、どんな人をも差別してはならないと、幻で示してくださいました。　29 ですから、お招きを受けた時、何のためらいもなく、やって来たわけです。　ところで、いったいどんなご用があるのでしょう。」
30 コルネリオが口を切りました。　「実は、四日前の午後のことです。　ちょうど今ごろですが、いつものように祈っておりましたところ、突然、輝くばかりの衣をまとった人が、目の前に現われたのです。　31 その人は、『コルネリオよ。　あなたの祈りも良い行ないも、神様はすべてご存じです。　32 さあ、ヨッパに使いをやって、シモン・ペテロという人を招きなさい。　海岸沿いの皮なめし職人シモンの家にいます』とおっしゃいました。　33 それで、すぐあなた様を迎えにやったのですが、こんなに早々とお越しいただいて、何とお礼を申し上げてよいやら......。　私たちは今、主があなた様にお命じになったことを、一つ残らずうかがおうと、こうして神様の前に出て待っているのです。」
34 ペテロは話し始めました。
「神様はただユダヤ人だけを愛しておられるのではないことが、はっきりわかりました。　35 神様を礼拝し、また良い行ないをして神様に喜ばれる人は、どこの国にもいるのです。　36-37 イスラエル人に伝えられた神様のすばらしい知らせのことは、すでにお聞きおよびでしょう。　全人類の主である救い主イエス様によって、私たちが神様と和解できるということです。　この教えは、バプテスマのヨハネが語り始め、ガリラヤからユダヤ全土に広まりました。　38 ナザレのイエス様は、神の聖霊と力とに満たされて、すばらしいことを行ない、また悪霊に取りつかれている人たちをみな治しながら、ほうぼうを巡回されました。　それは、神様がこの方と共におられたからだということも、きっとご存じでしょう。
39 私たち使徒は、イエス様がイスラエル全国、またエルサレムでなさったすべてのことの証人です。　このエルサレムで、イエス様は十字架につけられたのです。　40-41 しかし神様は、三日後にイエス様を復活させてくださいました。　そしてそのことを、一般の人にではなく、神様があらかじめ選んでおられた特定の証人に、示してくださったのです。　私たちは復活したイエス様とお会いして、いっしょに食事もしました。　42 主は、このすばらしい知らせをすべての人に伝えようと、私たちを派遣なさいました。　それで私たちは、このイエス様が、生きている人でも死んだ人でもすべての人を審判する方として、神様に任命されたのだと証言しているのです。　43 もちろんイエス様のことは、今までのどの預言者も、この方を信じる者はだれでも、その名によって罪が赦されると証言しています。」
44 ペテロがまだ話しているうちに、聖霊が一人一人に下りました。　45 ペテロに同行して来たユダヤ人のクリスチャンたちは、外国人にも聖霊の贈り物が与えられたので驚きました。　46-47 しかし、疑う余地のない事実です。　人々は自由に他国のことばで話し、神を賛美していたからです。
「私たちと同じく、聖霊様を受けた以上、この人たちにバプテスマ（洗礼）を授けることに、だれも反対できません。」　こうきっぱり言いきると、　48 ペテロは、キリスト・イエスの名によって、バプテスマを授けました。　コルネリオはペテロに、数日間、泊まってほしいと頼みました。ペテロの報告

1 Now there was a certain man in Caesarea, Cornelius by name, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,2 a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, who gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.3 He saw in a vision openly, as it were about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying to him, Cornelius.4 And he, fastening his eyes upon him, and being affrighted, said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are gone up for a memorial before God.5 And now send men to Joppa, and fetch one Simon, who is surnamed Peter:6 he lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side.7 And when the angel that spake unto him was departed, he called two of his household-servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;8 and having rehearsed all things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.9 Now on the morrow, as they were on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour:10 and he became hungry, and desired to eat: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance;11 and he beholdeth the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth:12 wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts and creeping things of the earth and birds of the heaven.13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat.14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common and unclean.15 And a voice came unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, make not thou common.16 And this was done thrice: and straightway the vessel was received up into heaven.17 Now while Peter was much perplexed in himself what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men that were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood before the gate,18 and called and asked whether Simon, who was surnamed Peter, were lodging there.19 And while Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.20 But arise, and get thee down, and go with them, nothing doubting: for I have sent them.21 And Peter went down to the men, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?22 And they said, Cornelius a centurion, a righteous man and one that feareth God, and well reported of by all the nation of the Jews, was warned of God by a holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words from thee.23 So he called them in and lodged them. And on the morrow he arose and went forth with them, and certain of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.24 And on the morrow they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius was waiting for them, having called together his kinsmen and his near friends.25 And when it came to pass that Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.26 But Peter raised him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and findeth many come together:28 and he said unto them, Ye yourselves know how it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to join himself or come unto one of another nation; and yet unto me hath God showed that I should not call any man common or unclean:29 wherefore also I came without gainsaying, when I was sent for. I ask therefore with what intent ye sent for me.30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago, until this hour, I was keeping the ninth hour of prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in bright apparel,31 and saith, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call unto thee Simon, who is surnamed Peter; he lodgeth in the house of Simon a tanner, by the sea side.33 Forthwith therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all things that have been commanded thee of the Lord.34 And Peter opened his mouth and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:35 but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to him.36 The word which he sent unto the children of Israel, preaching good tidings of peace by Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all.) --37 that saying ye yourselves know, which was published throughout all Judaea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;38 even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom also they slew, hanging him on a tree.40 Him God raised up the third day, and gave him to be made manifest,41 not to all the people, but unto witnesses that were chosen before of God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.42 And he charged us to preach unto the people, and to testify that this is he who is ordained of God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.43 To him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins.44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word.45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,47 Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we?48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
