Handelinge 13

1 Die gemeente in Antiogië het 'n klompie knap leiers gehad wat oor die gawe beskik het om God se wil bekend te maak. Barnabas, Simeon (hy is ook "swart Simeon" genoem), Lusius uit Sirene, Manaen, 'n stiefbroer van Herodes en ook Saulus het die gelowiges geleer hoe om tot God se eer te leef.
2 Op 'n dag, terwyl hulle besig was om te vas en ernstig tot die Here te bid, het die Heilige Gees vir hulle kom sê: "Julle moet Barnabas en Saulus nou losmaak van hulle werk in die gemeente. Daar wag 'n nuwe taak op hulle."3 Die gelowiges het toe klaar gevas en gebid en daarna het hulle hulle hande op Barnabas en Saulus gesit om hulle aan die Here op te dra. Daarop het die gelowiges van hulle afskeid geneem.
4  Die Heilige Gees het Saulus en Barnabas Seleukië toe gestuur. Daarvandaan het hulle per skip na die eiland Siprus gevaar. Johannes Markus het ook saam met hulle gegaan.5 In Salamis het hulle begin om God se woord in die godsdienstige bymekaarkomplekke van die Jode bekend te maak. Hulle het die eiland van hoek tot kant deurkruis.
6 Met hulle aankoms by Pafos het hulle 'n Joodse towenaar raakgeloop. Sy naam was Barjesus. Hy het gemaak of hy 'n boodskapper van God was. Die goewerneur, Sergius Paulus, 'n baie intelligente man, het die wêreld van hom gedink.
7 Goewerneur Sergius Paulus het van Barnabas en Saulus te hore gekom en hulle laat haal. Hy wou persoonlik by hulle hoor wat hulle oor God te sê gehad het.8 Elimas (dit is Barjesus se Griekse naam) was nie baie bly daaroor nie. Hy het die goewerneur probeer keer om na hulle te luister, want hy wou nie hê dat Sergius Paulus 'n Christen moes word nie.
9 Toe Saulus (of Paulus, soos hy ook bekend was) by Sergius Paulus aankom, was Elimas ook daar. Paulus was vol van die Heilige Gees se krag. Hy het Elimas waterpas in die oë gekyk en vir hom gesê: "Ek sien dat jou lewe die ene boosheid is.10 Jy is 'n kind van die duiwel. Met al jou skewe leringe probeer jy keer dat God se woord op die regte manier bekendgemaak word. Maar nou het jy jou teen God self vasgeloop.11 Hy gaan jou van hierdie oomblik af blind laat word. Jy sal 'n ruk lank niks kan sien nie."
Dadelik het alles voor Elimas donker geword. Hy het hulpeloos rondgestrompel en gevra dat iemand hom moet weglei.
12 Omdat die goewerneur gesien het wat gebeur het, het hy in Jesus begin glo. Hy was baie opgewonde oor alles wat Paulus-hulle vir hom oor die Here gesê het.
13  Na hierdie gebeure het Paulus en sy metgeselle met 'n skip na Perge in Pamfilië gereis. Johannes Markus het nie kans gesien om verder saam met hulle te gaan nie. Hy het besluit om terug te gaan Jerusalem toe.14 Intussen het die res van die geselskap van Perge na die stad Antiogië in Pisidië vertrek. Met hulle aankoms het hulle op die sabbatdag na die Joodse aanbiddingsplek gegaan.
15 Nadat die voorganger in die sinagoge uit die Ou Testament voorgelees het, het die hoofde van die sinagoge vir Paulus en Barnabas gevra: "Vriende, ons sien julle is nuut hier. Het julle nie iets op die hart wat julle vir ons wil vertel nie? Dalk 'n woord om ons moed in te praat?"
16  Paulus het opgestaan en vir almal in die sinagoge beduie om stil te bly. Toe sê hy vir hulle: "Geagte volksgenote, ek kom agter dat julle groot respek vir God het. Daarom moet julle nou baie mooi luister.17 God het ons voorvaders baie jammer gekry. Daarom het Hy hulle as sy volk uitgekies. Toe hulle nog slawe en vreemdelinge in Egipte was, het Hy hulle daar gaan uithaal en van hulle 'n groot volk gemaak.18 Veertig jaar lank het Hy vir hulle in die woestyn gesorg.19 Daarna het Hy sewe volke in Kanaän vernietig en hulle grond aan ons voorouers gegee.20 Gedurende hierdie tyd van sowat 450 jaar het God 'n hele klomp rigters aangestel om sy volk te lei totdat die profeet Samuel op die toneel verskyn het.
21 "In Samuel se tyd wou die volk 'n koning hê om oor hulle te regeer. God het Saul, die seun van Kis uit die stam van Benjamin, as koning aangestel. Hy het 40 jaar lank regeer.22 Nadat God hom van die toneel verwyder het, het Hy Dawid as die nuwe koning aangewys. God het van hom gesê: 'Ek het oral gesoek totdat ek Dawid, Isai se seun, gekry het. Hy is iemand so reg na my hart. Hy sal alles doen wat Ek vir hom sê.'
23 "Uit Dawid se nageslag het God 'n Redder vir Israel laat voortkom. Sy naam is Jesus.24 Net voor Hom het Johannes die Doper daar in Galilea opgetree. Hy het vir die volk gesê dat hulle hulle sondes moet laat staan en hulle tot God moet bekeer. Diegene wat bereid was om dit te doen, is toe deur hom gedoop.25 Toe Johannes amper klaar was met sy werk, het hy gesê: 'Dink julle dat ek die Een, die Gestuurde van God is? Wel, julle is verkeerd. Ek is nie Hy nie. As ek klaar is met my werk, sal hierdie Een op die toneel verskyn. Hy is so belangrik dat ek nie eens werd is om die werk van 'n slaaf vir Hom te doen deur sy skoene vir Hom vas te maak nie.'"
26  "Broers, julle is Abraham se nageslag. Julle is die mense wat groot respek vir God het. Weet julle, hierdie boodskap van verlossing is spesiaal vir julle bedoel.
27 "Die inwoners van Jerusalem en al hulle leiers het nie 'n idee gehad wie Jesus regtig is nie. Daarom het hulle Hom doodgemaak. So het hulle die woorde van die profete waar laat word wat julle elke sabbat hier in julle sinagoge lees. Daardie mense het glad nie 'n goeie rede gehad om Jesus dood te maak nie, maar nogtans het hulle dit gedoen.28 Hulle het by die Romeinse goewerneur, Pilatus, gaan soebat dat hy Hom moes teregstel.
29 "Nadat hierdie mense alles aan die Messias gedoen het wat die profete gesê het hulle sou doen, het hulle sy liggaam van die kruis afgehaal en Hom gaan begrawe.
30 "God het Hom weer lewendig gemaak.31 Daarna het Jesus dikwels aan sy volgelinge verskyn. Dit is hulle wat van die tyd toe Hy in Galilea gepreek het oral saam met Hom rondgegaan het. Daardie mans het met hulle eie oë gesien dat Hy lewe. Hulle is op hierdie selfde oomblik besig om oral onder die Israeliete te preek."
32  "Ons het vandag baie goeie nuus vir julle: al die beloftes wat God aan ons voorouers gemaak het, het nou waar geword.33 Ons, hulle kinders, kan nou hoor en sien dat dit waar geword het toe Hy Jesus lewendig gemaak het. Een van die psalms beskryf dit glashelder:
'Jy is my Seun. Net jy! Vandag verklaar Ek voor almal dat Ek jou Vader is.'
34 "Toe God Jesus lewendig gemaak het, het Hy dit eens en vir altyd gedoen. Jesus sal nooit weer doodgaan en in die doderyk vergaan nie. So het God alles waar laat word wat Dawid vroeër gesê het:35 'U sal nooit toelaat dat u eie kneg in die doderyk vergaan nie.'
36 "Dawid het natuurlik nie oor homself gepraat toe hy dit geskryf het nie. Hy is immers lankal dood en begrawe. Van hom het daar niks oorgebly nie.37 Maar Jesus is deur God lewendig gemaak. Hy sal nooit weer die binnekant van die doderyk met al sy verrotting sien nie.
38 "Vriende, julle moet mooi luister na wat ek vandag vir julle sê: julle moet begryp dat Jesus al julle sondes kan vergewe. Dit is die boodskap wat ek vandag aan julle bring.39 Ja, Hy kan selfs daardie sondes van julle wegvat wat die wet van Moses nie kan wegvat nie. Elkeen wat in Jesus glo, se saak met God is weer in orde.
40 "Moenie die fout maak om hierdie boodskap te verwerp nie. Dan gaan dit van julle waar wees wat God deur een van sy boodskappers gesê het:

41 'Oppas, julle spul spotters. Julle gaan verbaas staan oor wat Ek onder julle gaan doen. Dit gaan so indrukwekkend wees dat julle dit nie sou glo as iemand anders julle daarvan vertel het nie. Maar dan sal dit te laat wees, want Ek gaan julle vernietig.'"
42  Toe die diens in die sinagoge verby was, het die mense vir Paulus gevra om weer die volgende sabbat met hulle oor Jesus te kom praat. Terwyl hulle begin huis toe gaan, het 'n groot groep Jode en 'n klompie persone wat hulle vroeër tot die Joodse geloof bekeer het, agtergebly.43 Paulus en Barnabas het nog lank met hulle gepraat. Hulle het vir die mense gesê: "Hou altyd net aan God se goedheid vas. Glo in Christus!"
44 Op die volgende sabbat het omtrent die hele stad se inwoners by die sinagoge opgedaag om na die Here se woord te kom luister.45 Toe die Jode die groot skare sien, het hulle groen van jaloesie geword. Hulle het daar voor almal begin om Paulus te beledig en om lasterlike dinge teen Jesus te sê.
46 Paulus en Barnabas het skerp daarop gereageer: "Ons moes eerste met julle oor God se verlossingsdade kom praat. Maar noudat julle die rug daarop gekeer het, moet julle weet dat julle die ewige lewe gaan misloop. Ons gaan nou die goeie nuus meedeel aan mense wat nie Jode is nie. God het ons beveel om na hulle toe te gaan toe Hy vir ons gesê het:47 'Ek het jou aangestel om 'n lig vir ander volke te wees. Jy moet vir almal tot aan die verste uithoeke van die wêreld gaan vertel dat Ek hulle verlos.'"

48  Toe die mense wat nie Jode was nie hierdie woorde hoor, het hulle begin hande klap en juig. Hulle het God geloof omdat Hy ook vir hulle omgee. Almal van hulle wat deur God uitgesoek is om 'n plek in sy nuwe wêreld te kry het toe tot geloof in Jesus gekom.
49 Daarna het die woord van die Here soos 'n veldbrand deur die hele gebied versprei.50 Die Joodse owerhede was baie kwaad daaroor. Hulle het agteraf 'n aantal leiersfigure in die stad en ook 'n groep belangrike vroue opgesteek om Paulus en Barnabas met geweld te laat verwyder.51 Hulle twee is ook kort daarna hardhandig uit die stad weggejaag.
Hierdie slegte ervaring het Paulus-hulle nie mismoedig gemaak nie. Hulle het na Ikonium, die volgende stad, toe gegaan om die goeie nuus daar aan die mense te vertel. Hulle was steeds vol van die Heilige Gees se krag en ook vol blydskap.

The Church at Antioch Commissions Barnabas and Saul

1 Now there were these prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch:ss Barnabas, Simeon called Niger,s Lucius the Cyrenian,s Manaen (a close friend of Herods the tetrarchts from childhoodt) and Saul.2 While they were servingt the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apartt for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

3 Then, after they had fastedt andt prayed and placed their handss on them, they sent them off.

Paul and Barnabas Preach in Cyprus

4 So Barnabas and Saul,t sent out by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia,s and from there they sailed to Cyprus.s5 Whent they arrivedt in Salamis,s they began to proclaimt the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.s (Now they also had Johns as their assistant.)ts6 When they had crossed overt the whole island as far as Paphos,s they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus,s7 who was with the proconsuls Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsult summonedt Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hears the word of God.8 But the magician Elymast (for that is the way his name is translated)s opposed them, trying to turn the proconsuls away from the faith.9 But Saul (also known as Paul),s filled with the Holy Spirit,s stared straightt at him10 and said, “You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing,t you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness – will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?s11 Nowt look, the hand of the Lord is againstt you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!” Immediately mistinesss and darkness came overt him, and he went around seeking peoplet to lead him by the hand.

12 Then when the proconsuls saw what had happened, he believed,s because he was greatly astoundedt at the teaching aboutt the Lord.

Paul and Barnabas at Pisidian Antioch

13 Then Paul and his companions put out to seat from Paphoss and came to Pergas in Pamphylia,s but Johns left them and returned to Jerusalem.ss14 Moving on fromt Perga,s they arrived at Pisidian Antioch,tss and on the Sabbath day they went intot the synagogues and sat down.15 After the reading from the law and the prophets,s the leaders of the synagoguet sent them a message,t saying, “Brothers,t if you have any messaget of exhortationt for the people, speak it.”t

16 So Paul stood up,t gesturedt with his hand and said,
“Men of Israel,t and you Gentiles who fear God,t listen:17 The God of this people Israelt chose our ancestorsts and made the people greatt during their stay as foreignerst in the countryt of Egypt, and with uplifted arms he led them out of it.18 Fort a period of about forty years he put up witht them in the wilderness.t19 Aftert he had destroyedt seven nationss in the land of Canaan, he gave his people their land as an inheritance.t20 All this tookt about four hundred fifty years. After thist he gave them judges until the time oft Samuel the prophet.21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruledt forty years.22 After removing him, Godt raised ups David their king. He testified about him:t ‘I have found Davids the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart,s who will accomplish everything I want him to do.’t23 From the descendantsts of this mans God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, just as he promised.ts24 Beforet Jesust arrived, Johns had proclaimed a baptism for repentancet to all the people of Israel.25 But while John was completing his mission,t he said repeatedly,t ‘What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!’t26 Brothers,t descendantst of Abraham’s family,t and those Gentiles among you who fear God,t the messaget of this salvation has been sent to us.27 For the people who live in Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognizet him,t and they fulfilled the sayingsts of the prophets that are read every Sabbath by condemningt him.t28 Thought they foundt no basiss for a death sentence,t they asked Pilate to have him executed.29 When they had accomplishedt everything that was writtens about him, they took him downt from the crosst and placed himt in a tomb.30 But God raiseds him from the dead,31 andt for many days he appeared to those who had accompanieds him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Theset are now his witnesses to the people.32 And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors,t33 that this promisets God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raisingts Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, ‘You are my Son;stoday I have fathered you.’ts34 But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesust from the dead, nevert again to bet in a state of decay, Godt has spoken in this way: ‘I will give youtthe holy and trustworthy promisestmade to David.’s35 Therefore he also says in another psalm,t ‘You will not permit your Holy Onetto experiencetdecay.’s36 For David, after he had servedt God’s purpose in his own generation, died,t was buried with his ancestors,t and experiencedt decay,37 but the ones whom God raised up did not experiencet decay.38 Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this onet forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,39 and by this ones everyone who believes is justifiedt from everything from which the law of Moses could not justifyt you.t

40 Watch out,s then, that what is spoken about byt the prophets does not happen to you:

41 ‘Look, you scoffers; be amazed and perish!t
For I am doing a work in your days,
a work you would never believe, even if someone tells you.’”s
42 As Paul and Barnabast were going out,t the peoplet were urgingt them to speak about these thingst on the next Sabbath.

43 When the meeting of the synagogues had broken up,t many of the Jews and God-fearing proselytest followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking with them and were persuadingt themt to continuet in the grace of God.
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city assembled together to hear the word of the Lord.ss45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy,s and they began to contradictt what Paul was sayingt by reviling him.t46 Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously,t “It was necessary to speak the word of Godt to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthyt of eternal life, wet are turning to the Gentiles.s47 For thist is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have appointedtyou to be a lightsfor the Gentiles, to bring salvationtto the ends of the earth.’”s48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoicet and praiset the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed for eternal lifes believed.49 So the word of the Lord was spreadingt through the entire region.50 But the Jews incitedt the God-fearing women of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them outt of their region.51 So after they shookt the dust off their feets in protest against them, they went to Iconium.s

52 And the disciples were filled with joys and with the Holy Spirit.
