1 I Antiokia, i menigheten der, var det profeter og lærere: Barnabas og Simeon, som kaltes Niger, og Lukius fra Kyrene og Manaen, fosterbror til fjerdingsfyrsten Herodes, og Saulus.2 Mens de holdt gudstjeneste og fastet, sa den Hellige Ånd: Ta ut for mig Barnabas og Saulus til den gjerning som jeg har kalt dem til!

3 Da lot de dem dra ut efterat de hadde fastet og bedt og lagt hendene på dem.

4 Da de nu således var utsendt av den Hellige Ånd, drog de ned til Seleukia og seilte derfra til Kypern,5 og da de var kommet til Salamis, forkynte de Guds ord i jødenes synagoger; de hadde også Johannes med, som skulde gå dem til hånde.6 Efterat de nu hadde vandret gjennem hele øen like til Pafus, traff de på en trollmann, en falsk profet, en jøde ved navn Barjesus,7 som var hos landshøvdingen Sergius Paulus, en forstandig mann. Denne kalte Barnabas og Saulus til sig og bad om å få høre Guds ord.8 Men Elymas, trollmannen for således uttydes hans navn stod dem imot og søkte å vende landshøvdingen bort fra troen.9 Da blev Saulus, som også kaltes Paulus, fylt av den Hellige Ånd, og han så skarpt på ham og sa:10 Du som er full av all svik og all ondskap, du djevelens barn, all rettferdighets fiende! vil du ikke holde op med å forvende Herrens rette veier?11 Og nu, se, Herrens hånd er over dig, og du skal bli blind og til en tid ikke se solen. Og straks falt det skodde og mørke over ham, og han gikk omkring og søkte efter nogen som kunde lede ham ved hånden.12 Da kom landshøvdingen til troen, da han så det som var skjedd, og han undret sig storlig over Herrens lære.

13 Paulus og de som var med ham, seilte da ut fra Pafus og kom til Perge i Pamfylia, men Johannes skilte sig fra dem og vendte tilbake til Jerusalem.

14 Men de drog videre fra Perge og kom til Antiokia i Pisidia, og gikk inn i synagogen på sabbatsdagen og satte sig der.15 Efter oplesningen av loven og profetene sendte da synagoge-forstanderne bud til dem og sa: Brødre! har I noget formaningsord til folket, så tal!16 Da stod Paulus op og slo til lyd med hånden og sa: Israelittiske menn og I som frykter Gud! Hør:17 Dette folks, Israels, Gud utvalgte våre fedre, og han lot folket vokse sig stort under utlendigheten i Egypten, og med løftet arm førte han dem ut derfra,18 og omkring firti år bar han dem på faderarm i ørkenen,19 og han utryddet syv folkeslag i Kana'ns land og skiftet deres land ut til arv for dem, i omkring fire hundre og femti år.20 Siden gav han dem dommere inntil profeten Samuel.21 Og derefter krevde de en konge, og Gud gav dem Saul, Kis'sønn, en mann av Benjamins stamme, i firti år,22 og efterat han hadde avsatt ham, opreiste han dem David til konge, som han også gav dette vidnesbyrd: Jeg fant David, Isais sønn, en mann efter mitt hjerte; han skal gjøre all min vilje.23 Av hans ætt førte han efter sitt løfte en frelser frem for Israel, Jesus,24 efterat Johannes forut for hans fremtreden hadde forkynt omvendelses dåp for hele Israels folk.25 Men da Johannes fullendte sitt løp, sa han: Den I holder mig for å være, er jeg ikke; men se, det kommer en efter mig, hvis sko jeg ikke er verdig til å løse av hans føtter.26 Brødre, sønner av Abrahams ætt og de iblandt eder som frykter Gud! til eder blev ordet om denne frelse utsendt.27 For de som bor i Jerusalem, og deres rådsherrer kjente ham ikke, og ved å dømme ham opfylte de profetenes ord som blir lest hver sabbat,28 og enda de ikke fant nogen dødsskyld hos ham, bad de Pilatus at han måtte bli slått ihjel.29 Og da de hadde fullbyrdet alt som er skrevet om ham, tok de ham ned av treet og la ham i en grav.30 Men Gud opvakte ham fra de døde,31 og han åpenbarte sig i flere dager for dem som hadde draget op med ham fra Galilea til Jerusalem, de som nu er hans vidner for folket.32 Og vi forkynner eder evangeliet om det løfte som blev gitt til fedrene, at dette har Gud opfylt for oss, deres barn, idet han opreiste Jesus,33 således som det også er skrevet i den annen salme: Du er min Sønn; jeg har født dig idag.34 Men at han har opreist ham fra de døde, så han ikke mere skal vende tilbake til tilintetgjørelse, det har han sagt således: Jeg vil gi eder de hellige løfter til David, de trofaste.35 Derfor sier han også på et annet sted: Du skal ikke overgi din hellige til å se tilintetgjørelse.36 For David sov inn, efterat han i sin levetid hadde tjent Guds råd, og han blev samlet med sine fedre og så tilintetgjørelse;37 men den som Gud opvakte, han så ikke tilintetgjørelse.

38 Så være det eder da vitterlig, brødre, at ved ham forkynnes eder syndenes forlatelse,39 og fra alt det som I ikke kunde rettferdiggjøres fra ved Mose lov, rettferdiggjøres i ham enhver som tror.40 Se da til at ikke det kommer over eder som er sagt hos profetene:

41 Se, I foraktere, og undre eder og bli til intet! for en gjerning gjør jeg i eders dager, en gjerning som I ikke vil tro om nogen forteller eder det.
42 Da de gikk ut, bad folk dem om at disse ord måtte bli talt til dem den følgende sabbat.43 Og da synagoge-tjenesten var til ende, fulgte mange av jødene og av de gudsdyrkere som hadde tatt ved jødenes tro, med Paulus og Barnabas; disse talte da med dem og formante dem til å holde fast ved Guds nåde.

44 På den næste sabbat samlet da næsten hele byen sig for å høre Herrens ord.45 Men da jødene så folkehopen, blev de fulle av nidkjærhet og motsa det som blev sagt av Paulus, ja motsa og spottet.46 Da tok Paulus og Barnabas til orde og sa dem rent ut: Det var nødvendig at Guds ord blev talt først til eder; men siden I støter det fra eder og ikke akter eder verdige til det evige liv, så vender vi oss nu til hedningene.47 For så er Herrens bud til oss: Jeg har satt dig til et lys for hedninger, forat du skal være til frelse inntil jordens ende.48 Da hedningene hørte det, blev de glade og priste Herrens ord, og de tok ved troen så mange som var utsett til evig liv.49 Og Herrens ord utbredte sig over hele landet.50 Men jødene satte op de fornemme kvinner som var tilhengere av jødenes tro, og de første menn i byen, og de reiste en forfølgelse mot Paulus og Barnabas, og drev dem bort fra sine landemerker.51 De rystet da støvet av sine føtter mot dem, og kom til Ikonium.

52 Men disiplene blev fylt av glede og den Hellige Ånd.

Barnabas and Saul //Are Chosen and Sent

1 The church at Antioch had several prophets and teachers. They were Barnabas, Simeon, also called Niger, Lucius from Cyrene, Manaen, who was Herod'st close friend, and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and going without eating, t the Holy Spirit told them, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul to do the work for which I have chosen them.”

3 Everyone prayed and went without eating for a while longer. Next, they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul to show that they had been appointed to do this work. Then everyone sent them on their way.

5 They arrived at Salamis and began to preach God's message in the synagogues. They also had Johnt as a helper.
6 Barnabas and Saul went all the way to the city of Paphos on the other end of the island, where they met a Jewish man named Bar-Jesus. He practiced witchcraft and was a false prophet. 7 He also worked for Sergius Paulus, who was very smart and was the governor of the island. Sergius Paulus wanted to hear God's message, and he sent for Barnabas and Saul.

8 But Bar-Jesus, whose other name was Elymas, was against them. He even tried to keep the governor from having faith in the Lord.
9 Then Saul, better known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit. He looked straight at Elymas 10 and said, “You son of the devil! You are a liar, a crook, and an enemy of everything that is right. When will you stop speaking against the true ways of the Lord?

11 The Lord is going to punish you by making you completely blind for a while.”
Suddenly the man's eyes were covered by a dark mist, and he went around trying to get someone to lead him by the hand.

12 When the governor saw what had happened, he was amazed at this teaching about the Lord. So he put his faith in the Lord.

14 The rest of them went on from Perga to Antioch in Pisidia. Then on the Sabbath they went to the synagogue and sat down.

15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, t the leaders sent someone over to tell Paul and Barnabas, “Friends, if you have anything to say that will help the people, please say it.”

16 Paul got up. He motioned with his hand and said:
People of Israel, and everyone else who worships God, listen! 17 t The God of Israel chose our ancestors, and he let our people prosper while they were living in Egypt. Then with his mighty power he led them out, 18 t and for about 40 years he took care oft them in the desert. 19 t He destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan and gave their land to our people.

20 t All this happened in about 450 years.
Then God gave our people judges until the time of the prophet Samuel, 21 t but the people demanded a king. So for 40 years God gave them King Saul, the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.

22 t Later, God removed Saul and let David rule in his place. God said about him, “David the son of Jesse is the kind of person who pleases me most! He does everything I want him to do.”
23 God promised that someone from David's family would come to save the people of Israel, and this one is Jesus. 24 t But before Jesus came, John was telling everyone in Israel to turn back to God and be baptized.

25 t Then, when John's work was almost done, he said, “Who do you people think I am? Do you think I am the Promised One? He will come later, and I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”
26 Now listen, you descendants of Abraham! Pay attention, all of you Gentiles who are here to worship God! Listen to this message about how to be saved, because it is for everyone.

27 The people of Jerusalem and their leaders didn't realize who Jesus was. And they didn't understand the words of the prophets they read each Sabbath. So they condemned Jesus just as the prophets had said.

28-29  t t They did exactly what the Scriptures said they would. Even though they couldn't find any reason to put Jesus to death, they still asked Pilate to have him killed.
After Jesus had been put to death, he was taken down from the crosst and placed in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from death!

31 t Then for many days Jesus appeared to his followers who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. Now they are telling our people about him.
32 God made a promise to our ancestors. And we are here to tell you the good news

33 t that he has kept this promise to us. It is just as the second Psalm says about Jesus,
“You are my son because today
I have become your Father.”

34  t God raised Jesus from death and will never let his body decay. It is just as God said,
“I will make to you
the same holy promises
that I made to David.”

35  t And in another psalm it says, “God will never let the body of his Holy One decay.”
36 When David was alive, he obeyed God. Then after he died, he was buried in the family grave, and his body decayed.

37 But God raised Jesus from death, and his body did not decay.
38 My friends, the message is that Jesus can forgive your sins! The Law of Moses could not set you free from all your sins. 39 But everyone who has faith in Jesus is set free.

40 Make sure what the prophets have said doesn't happen to you. They said,

41  t “Look, you people
who make fun of God!
Be amazed
and disappear.
I will do something today
that you won't believe,
even if someone
tells you about it!”
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people begged them to say more about these same things on the next Sabbath.

43 After the service, many Jews and a lot of Gentiles who worshiped God went with them. Paul and Barnabas begged them all to remain faithful to God, who had treated them with undeserved grace.
44 The next Sabbath almost everyone in town came to hear the message about the Lord.t

45 When the Jewish people saw the crowds, they were very jealous. They insulted Paul and spoke against everything he said.

46 But Paul and Barnabas bravely said:
We had to tell God's message to you before we told it to anyone else. But you rejected the message! This proves that you don't deserve eternal life. Now we are going to the Gentiles.

47 t The Lord has given us this command,
“I have placed you here
as a light
for the Gentiles.
You are to take
the saving power of God
to people everywhere on earth.”

48 This message made the Gentiles glad, and they praised what they had heard about the Lord.t Everyone who had been chosen for eternal life then put their faith in the Lord.
49 The message about the Lord spread all over this region.

50 But the Jewish leaders went to some of the important men in the town and to some respected women who were religious. They turned them against Paul and Barnabas and started making trouble for them. They even chased them out of this part of the country.

51  t Paul and Barnabas shook the dust from that place off their feett and went on to the city of Iconium.
52 But the Lord's followers in Antioch were very happy and were filled with the Holy Spirit.
